Poll question: Paul McCartney: Lip Synced
Was the Super Bowl performance lip synced by Paul McCartney last night?

(Stems from a discussion I had with a family member concerning this last night)

1. Seemed pretty obvious during 'Hey Jude'
There are major problems when you try to use open mics in the middle of a 70,000+ seat stadium. Syncing is the easy way out.

The count off for Hey Jude (eg "1,2,3,4") came through the TV audio also and it sounded like Paul's voice to me although he was not moving his lips at the time.

3. He Said He Wasn't And He's Way Too Smart To Lie About Something Like That
Why would he have to lip syc....

I'd suspect he's played those songs at least a couple of thousand times each in practice and in concert...

4. I'm an Audio Engineer by trade.
It never seemed obvious that Paul was lip-syncing.

Look, I'm not a huge McCartney fan......but Paul was not lip-syncing. He's just an immense talent.

14. Thank you...
Tom Shales accused McCartney of lip-syncing in yesterday's WP, also saying it was pretty obvious at one point.

I made a point of looking for this when I watched, and was pleasantly surprized to note that he actually appeared to be singing...and in excellent voice, given he's no longer 30 years old.

I did notice that at one point the ensemble was a little off, which seems unlikely if it's electronically synced...

They may have been playing along to some tracks
but he was definitely singing live. I wondered too because it sounded so good but some things you just can't fake.

Paul is a real talent. Not a lot of that around these days...

17. They did seem a bit off during LALD.

But let me be clear, just because it doesn't appear that Paul was lip-syncing the lead vocal, does not mean that there might not have been a little help from backing tracks or that the songs themselves were not sync'd. In fact, most live music nowadays on that big a scale are sync'd to a click track, etc...so that the video and pyrotechnics can be in time to the music.

10. He sounded a bit off to me at times which made me think
he was really singing. Plus, they rushed into one song after he had been attempting to dance, poor thing, and he was a bit breathless.

2. Other - I didn't watch, so I don't know.
I'm honestly surprised at how many people actually watch the halftime show. I had no idea...

6. No... but in fairness I hardly paid attention to the game, either.
I didn't find any of it all that interesting. Just had to watch to root for the Pats. :)

7. Most boring Super Bowl of all time?
Edited on Mon Feb-07-05 12:02 PM by Seabiscuit
In the first half the defenses killed the offenses, and the penalties negated many of the more exciting plays.

13. Yes, it was really hard to watch.
Sometime during the 1st quarter I quit watching and started reading a book. After that I only looked up if there was a big play.

11. Give me a break
If you think he was lip synching, you are seriously paranoid. It's possible... MAYBE there was a backing on Hey Jude, but the rest was all live.

12. What is the obsession with live performance?
Do people want to hear mistakes? Do they want to hear flubs? It doesn't make sense to me. So some lipsync. What of it. It means you will get a good performance. You will get the action of a stage performance with the quality of a studio recording?

I don't get it.

18. recordings are tweaked
to sound better than they are. The only way to judge a performer is to see live performance.
