1. HEyHEY, maybe they had to do it
for censorship reasons. Maybe they were told to do it or they couldn't perform. It certainly wouldn't surprise me. They're not Bushbots, no way.

3. No, what happened
was they used the song during a clip section of football highlights. ANd it was edited just for time or something.

But the point is that was a great song about the need for peace. ANd U2 let the NFL desecrate it in that terrible fashion.

22. You and Maddox...
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=11worst

I can't stand them, and their middle-of-the-road "stands" on such controvertial topics as starvation, and bombing civilian targets.

The world must look pretty simplified from the windows of their Gulfstream Jet.

7. I agree with you 100%.
I'm not the sell-out police or anything, but I just remember a Nick Cave interview. He talked about how people would come up to him and talk about how they'd used one of his songs at their mother's or brother's or something's funeral, and how he couldn't imagine how horrible it would be to see that same song be played in a Nike commercial or something.

Certain music is just too important to be whored out to corporate America, and I would've hoped U2 would have realized that.

31. I always think of the U2 hallucination sequence in "American Psycho"
When the stage was bathed in blood-red light, and time stood still. Bono stopped singing and knealt down to speak to the narrator, a psychopathic mass-murderer, and says "I am just like you. You and I are one and the same".

9. Did they actually perform it? Or was it just used in a promo?
If the latter, chances were they licensed the song through Island Records, not directly with the band.

Don't forget, Island Records sued Negativland, not the band.

35. Not necessarily
If it was from their live Superbowl performance of Sunday, Bloody Sunday from a few years back, the NFL most likely owns the broadcast rights to that particular version of the song and would be able to do whatever they want with it, as long as they pay the publishing rights.

These live performance agreements are a little trickier than they appear. My guess is that the network and the NFL were given the right to use their performance for promotion in the original contract. I would guess that U2 would never in a million years expect them to use a song like Sunday, Bloody Sunday in that manner.

Of course, I could be wrong. But my instinct says I'm not. ;-)

11. Fucking U2 is awesome!
Worry about something more important and stop bashing people on our side. Jesus Christ people lighten up. I went to Wal-Mart yesterday. I have some rethuglican friends. I use gasoline purchased from Exxon. And I am still very liberal. Shit. So what if U2 allowed a song to be used at the Super Bowl. They have a history with this game. They performed 2 or 3 years ago there.

13. The point is they let a powerful song of theirs be whored out
Edited on Sun Feb-06-05 11:18 PM by HEyHEY
By Monday night football. It wasn't Zooropa, where the streets have no name, or electric CO. IT was BLOODY SUNDAY. As song about a terrible day and the need for peace. And fox used it as a promo for saying their Sunday football was going to be "Bloody" what's next "Johnny I hardly KNew ya?"

17. But the song is about the massacre of Irish citizens ...
If someone used footage of September 11th to advertise the carnage of a sporting event, how would we react?

14. The left has always been good at
bashing people on our side for every single little supposed "sin", so many liberal groups demand total uniformity in EVERYTHING, or they start squabbling and bitching and pissing and moaning. THAT is why we've been losing and that is why WE WILL CONTINUE TO LOSE if we don't stop bitching about stupid shit, start really focusing, and becoming UNITED despite not totally agreeing on every single little thing.

That is what the right's done for the past thirty years, and that's why they're we're they're at now and we're in the losing position we're in. Lighten the fuck up, people, and start being UNITED. Or we're done for, if we're not already.

29. I highly doubt U2 approves
Often times, artists don't get a say in how their songs are used so long as they get a royalty.
I'm really getting sick of the U2 bashing.

33. I don't understand how they're tools
They probably didn't have *ANY* say in how their song was used- many artists have contracts that don't give them power to limit who or how their songs are used so long as they recieve royalties for the use.
Look, I'm upset that "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" was used for an effin' football game, but it's getting ridiculous as to how people expect some bands/musicians to be flawless. U2 does a TON of great work for AIDs and poverty causes, so if this one issue is a big problem for you, I would urge you to look at the bigger picture.
