I admit, I've always wondered who Deep Throat is/was. I've had endless discussions about it. I would guess that many of you don't care or have no idea why we are obsessed by it.

1. Not obsessed but definitely interested
I can't speak for others. But I like history and I like politics (duh - I'm on DU) so yeah, I'm interested in finding out who Deep Throat was.

Oh, I'm 19

Give us a little credit, would ya?!
Maybe you're thinking of people younger than me, but as a 30 year old, I have to say that Paul McCartney is one of the most bad-ass rock stars of all time and I loved his performance tonight. Particularly in comparison to last year's Janet Jackson and Justin boy-band Cheeseball debacle, McCartney kicks both of their asses hands-down, wardrobe malfunction or no.

As for Deep Throat, I think most younger people here already know, or they have learned recently with all the Watergate/what-will-get Bush**-impeached? conversations around here lately. At the very least, they have seen All the Presidents Men (if they haven't, and they DON'T know who Deep Throat is yet, the least you can do is rent that movie!).

And I've never been much into 70's porn, but I knew who the Watergate Deep Throat was waaay before I knew about the other Deep Throat. :)

edit: in my last paragraph I don't mean to imply that I know the actual identity of Deep Throat;)

He's also a damn fine librul.

36. No of course I think you know who McCartney is
but it's hard to describe just how big of an icon he was and how HUGE the Beatles were in the 60s. It was a very different time. We had no MTV and were not bombarded with music or culture, as you kids were growing up.

But you have to admit not all in your age group are familiar with Deep Throat. Many of your generation do NOT read. :)

10. I'll try to give my reason
Imagine someone inside the Bush administration started spilling all the secrets. The media obsessed about the new revelations. It ended his Presidency and Republican rule for a time. Wouldn't you always wonder who did it? It's probably a conservative and someone who's gone on to advancement in Republican circles. Deep throat is a hero and a person who put the country above the party. I hope.

I don't know how to reconcile that with some of the names floated lately.

14. Thanks!
I understand the whole thing now a bit better than I did when I was younger. It was never really explained fully to me, and it's not really taught in schools... I learn as much as I can on my own, but there's only so much American history one can cram up in the brain :)

24. Note while watching that Bernstein said the actor who portrayed
"Deep Throat" (Hal Holbrook) had the physical, behavioral, and especially sounded like the real guy.

Watch how they light him, too.

In retrospect, with what I know now--very, very, creepy. :scared:

They swore they'd not reveal it until DT's death, and Poppy does appear alive and well.

As far as I'm aware, so is Fred Fielding.

26. If you decide to watch the movie,
have a piece of paper and pen ready, and start writing down initials and names when they spit them out. The first time I watched, I was lost. Or watch with someone with a good memory.

Watergate was a third-rate scandal compared to what Bush is doing now. If Bush did Watergate the news wouldn't even report it today.

Fuck Watergate and Woodward and Bernstein.

Get a fucking media person to expose Bush and bring him down.

Cassius will you show me how to fight
Thomas A. I think I see the light
I was born tonight

I’ve had a hard time leaving this town
I’ve been losing everything that I’ve found
I’m gonna search the sky, kiss the ground
Build it up and tear it back down

I’ve had a hard time leaving this place
I’ve been counting all the lines on my face
I’m gonna curse the sky, hit the ground
What goes up comes tumbling down

Jimi show me how you play that thing
Elvis will I ever be a king
and Jerry all the joy and love you bring
I was born to sing

Martin Luther King show me the way
Jesus Buddha teach me how to pray
Christopher I think I see the bay
I was born today

35. I'm 49 and still wonder.
I lived out of the country during Nixon's disgrace and didn't pay much attention to politics, so missed a good part of it. The appearance of Woodward and Bernstein for their 'historical legacy' regarding that debacle has reinvigorated the debate. Plus the possibility of someone on the verge of death who is DT makes that plot thicken.
And I too love a good mystery. :)
