I never thought I'd be defending Brittany Spears, but I still remember vividly people saying the same exact things about Madonna in the early 80's. And then she actually did more racy stuff. But the fact is that her canny PR moves and marketing savvy have kept her in the public eye over the course of what is now a 20 year career where she was always calling the shots and people fell for it hook line and sinker by talking about her and giving her media coverage from Like a Virgin to Shanghai Surprise to the Sex book or her racy videos or her kids book or the MTV awards Kiss. And let's face it. People are still talking about Brittany Spears, about 2-3 years after the shelf life of most teen pop artists has long since expired.

Pop music artists are 80% marketing, 15% music, and 5 % intangible something. To discuss them as anything other than pop culture phenoms is silly.

Christina Aguillera clearly has a better voice. But her ridiculous attempts to market herself and keep herself in the public eye have met with near universal laughter and derision. And Jessica Simpsons attempts at expanding her appeal beyond the teen pop market with her stupid reality show where she continues to make herself look like a person of sub-par intelligence have made her a laughing stock as well.

Maybe Britney's getting more career advice from Madonna than anyone realizes. A lot of people, critics included, said Madonna was "done" when "Sex" was released. She's managed to hang around a while since.

I remember "Sex". My point was that Madonna made it (and continues to make it) by playing on the stereotype that men are only interested in women's bodies and will do anything for sex. Combine that with a little voyeurism concerning lesbians, some reasonable vocal talent, the odd girl-power interview comment to keep the feminists off her back, and behold- a career.
What she didn't do was use her celebrity to question a system that promotes women with the juiciest asses and least qualms about displaying them at the expense of women with brains or strength of character. So yes, Brittany has been able to follow in her footsteps and succeed, basically because the system remains unchanged since Madonna clawed her way up it. That's my point- not that Madonna will fail any day now.

and I give her credit for turning out some decent pop songs, but of course she dressed the way she did to increase her visibility. Her records might have enjoyed some modest success but I doubt she'd be the multi-millionaire she is if she hadn't have happened to be coming of age in the dawn of the MTV era. Those hit records were a result of the packaging.
Her primary intention may have been to make an artistic statement about her comfort with and empowerment over her own sexuality, but it was marketed as straight T&A and she didn't seem to have a huge problem with that in the interviews I've read.
I agree that Britney has a fraction of the talent and none of the good intentions, but it remains sad that this is what women have to do to make it as pop stars (regardless of talent or why they think they're doing it.) Again, cf. NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys (and jumping around shirtless isn't the same thing.)

Madonna's package ended up being a package of sexuality that melded with her music.

I think if you look at Britney, you won't see that melding. There seems to be a direct attempt to show skin in the hope that it will keep the public eye focused on only asset that men will be keen to keep an eye on.

To me, Madonna created a novel, good or bad, that's up for history to determine.

As for Madonna using sex to remain popular; well I suppose some people will see it as just that, a ploy to remain a popular figure. However, under closer examination, I think her package is a total package, I give her full credit for doing what she did as an artist, not as a female attempting to make it in an industry where she was forced to do it because of her sex.

Madonna's kiss with Briteny may have actually shot Briteny's popularity through the roof. Since that kiss, Britney has been taking more off, getting more covers and making more money than counterfitters in Russia.

Though, I differ with the critics on how accomplished she was at it. Britney seems more of a one-note package (both puns intended), so it remains to be seen if she can maintain her popularity or move on to other areas.

Madonna produces other artists and has her own record company. Maybe that's an even more important distinction - Madonna very much understands the business side of the industry, where Britney (or her managers/agents/etc.) may not. Not that they aren't trying to reinvent her.

She's no Mariah Carrey was my point in choosing "reasonable" as opposed to "stellar", but then range isn't always my primary criterion in singers I like.
The point, however, if you read the rest of my posts, is that she made it _largely_ due to packaging and that it's sad that this kind of packaging is still required of women in the pop music industry.

I think Madonna has made it easier for those who followed, because she broke down a lot of societal barriers, both good and bad, not all of them involving sex.

I think she helped break down a lot of glass-ceiling-type barries in the music industry. She paved the way for a lot of female musicians who really were more substance than style. While Britney may not be an example of that, there are a lot of women in the music industry who are.

Along with women like Pat Benatar and Joan Jett, and following in the footsteps of women like Janis Joplin, I think Madonna helped empower women in the music industry. And, she knew it. I think "Sex" was Madonna saying that she could do whatever she wanted and that she'd still have the power in the music industry to sell records.
