Pepper Red Peter Item# 3071

(90 day) The original strain from the Alfreys, reintroduced after an absence of years! Demand continues to far exceed supply of this ornery old heirloom, grown as much to shock the prudish as for its culinary value. Pods are 4 to 6 inches long, blunt-ended, and mature to a deep red - excellent for chili powder. Dense plants grow

Striptease Hosta Item# 12479

Zones 3-8, One of the most talked-about plants in hosta circles. Heavily textured leaves 8 inches long by 6 inches wide are dark green with narrow chartreuse centers. Small strips of white like little flashes of lightning 'tease' the area between the two colors. Lavender flowers on 24 inch stems in midsummer rise above the clumps that grow 16 inches high and 24 inches wide. Plant in shade to partial shade. Bareroot plants.

2. Gardening is all about sex! Everything a flower does is all about
getting pollinated! So many flowers look like sexual organs, because they are.

Pollinate me, baby!

Where do you think this flower got her name:

And take a look at this, Amaranthus caudatus 'Fat Spike':

Now, "spike" doesn't get pollinated because he looks like a, well, you know, but it's still all about plant sex!

3. oh my yes, when i went upstate to hand pollinate my friends pumpkins...
i thought it would be a lot more difficult to pick out the female flowers from the male...
LOL, it wasn't. I felt a little naughty getting up early and and helping them make hay while the sun shines... but the flowers close when it gets cloudy.
it's the same as it is with humans, timing is everything.
and this is a very good book about how plants seduce us into caring for them.
sounds familiar?
