Favorite James Garner film?
He just won the lifetime achievement award during the SAG awards. They showed his clips and they reminded me of his many movies.

My favorite: The Americanization of Emily
2nd favorite: Victor, Victoria

What about you?

His name comes just before Janeane Garofalo ---

apologize to James Gardner --- you may have confused him with a repug politician with the same name -- but they are two different people. One is one of my all time favorite actors -- James Gardner --and his wife is a letter writer from way back, according to Mr. Gardner on a late night talk show I hear years and years ago.

He is one of the good guys!!!!

8. You must be thinking of a politician named James Garner

The long-time actor is also a long-time Democrat

Which one can easily tell by the fact he has a real sense of humor and honor

The few times I've seen him interviewed he was described as an 'unabashed liberal'. He used to president of the Screen Actor's Guild some years ago, essentially a union president.

Best movie: "The Great Escape" although "...Emily" and "Victor/" are great too.

Nothing can beat "Maverick" and "The Rockford Files" on the tube!

Oh yeah, don't forget those Polaroid commercials, even those few minutes were great and believable.

9. Support Your Local Gunfighter
Edited on Sat Feb-05-05 09:50 PM by Maple
"Intro-James Garner and the same ensemble cast that was introduced in Support Your Local Sheriff head up this western comedy for another successful film. This is not a sequel, as the well known character actors Jack Elam, Henry Jones, and Harry Morgan play different characters. The female lead this time is played with spunk by a very appealing Suzanne Pleshette (before her Bob Newhart series). Other cast members include Joan Blondell, John Dehner, Dub Taylor and Marie Windsor. The results of this comedy are the same as the first, a lot of laughs.

Story-Gigalo and con-artist Garner gets off the train in a mining town to avoid a marriage and to get a tattoo removed. He is mistaken for a gunfighter which Harry Morgan has sent away for, as he has a feud going with the other power boss of the town, John Dehner. Each are digging around the clock to reach the center of town, where the "motherlode" is thought to be. Garner ends up going along with their mistaken identity because of a weakness he has for the roulette wheel. Jack Elam once again becomes his sidekick imitating the legendary gunslinger they have hired. Suzanne Pleshette is the town girl longing to get out of town and back east to a finishing school, although she is quick tempered and shoots at everything in sight when mad. Memorable roles are played by Dub Taylor, as the town doctor, Ellen Corby as the sister of John Dehner and Joan Blondell as the saloon owner."

****gunfighter, not gunslinger...my bad******

Hilarious movie anyway

I don't know why there were so many Western spoofs in the late 1960s, early 1970s (Cat Ballou, Texas Across the River, Blazing Saddles, Support Your Local Sheriff...) but the James Garner films were some of the best.

because I thought he specifically mentions some company welching their employees pensions, and medicare not covering for a wheelchair for a broken back.

Then Sally Field says "my father would call you a bleeding heart liberal"

Not only that, but when he hires the kid, he pays the kid a fair wage (well, for that time) when he could have gotten away w/ hiring him under the table for a lot less.

I got the impression he was pretty progressive.

When Sally Field makes that crack about him being a "bleeding heart", he said "At least I have the said organ". He's a liberal in that role for sure.

46. Well, if you remember. . .
what he says to Sally Field after that was, "Well, I don't know if it's bleedin' or not, but I got one." Not a ringing endorsement for a progressive. Part of that whole character was the fact you didn't know exactly WHAT to think of Murphy. In the old days most of the older people where I was didn't like to be known by their politics. That was considered private and their own business. Just meet your responsibilies, work hard, respect you elders and vote the man, not the party.

Favorite film? I can't pinpoint just one. "The Americanization of Emily", "Support Your Local Sheriff", "Sayanara", "Boys Night Out", "Murphy's Romance", "Maverick" (the movie)-what a treat it was to see him in that. Completely stole the movie from Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster.

James Garner's such a great actor he even made watching those frothy bedroom comedies with Doris Day bearable. In fact, he was the BEST thing about those comedies.

It's about time he's getting his due.

60. I don't think so
Garner actually left the series in a huff when they wouldn't pay him better. There may be some odd copyright issues--or worse, the tapes may have been lost or destroyed. :wow:

Our satellite company gets the Lone Star station, which is now rerunning Rawhide (described by my dad as the first existentialist western), so there's always hope!

You know, that "Natchez to New Orleans line" baffles me. I don't remember him getting that far east or south in the entire time the series ran... I mean, if he's a legend of the West, what would he be doing in Natchez?????

61. It's coming out this year, according to Warner Brothers
I found this memo from WB on a site called tvshowsondvd.com:

Maverick - Popular James Garner Western Series Mentioned In 'WB 50th' Press Release
Posted by David Lambert
12/28/2004

Warner Brothers has been promoting the celebration of their 50th Anniversary of creating great Television shows, and (as we've reported several times in the past) aims to make 2005 a great year full of releases of many of their classic shows. A new press release was distributed yesterday, and it mentioned one new show, Maverick. Here's the press release, courtesy of TVShowsOnDVD correspondent Pavan Badal, and we'll bold-face the Maverick reference lest it get buried. Below the text of the press release we continue with our story:

Warner Home Video Celebrates 50 Years of Television History from Warner Bros. Television with a Year-Long Promotion Featuring Today's Hit Shows and All-Time Classic Series

BURBANK, Calif. -- Dec. 27, 2004 -- In 2005, as Warner Bros. Television (WBTV) celebrates 50 years as the leader in television entertainment, Warner Home Video (WHV) is launching a year-long promotion featuring first-time-available and catalog DVD releases of WBTV hits. The studio-wide campaign will include DVD releases of series that date back to Maverick, one of WBTV's earliest series, continuing through to recent hits, and will feature special promotions for retailers and consumers.

Warner Bros. Television is the #1 supplier of scripted series programming with 1,700 television properties, including episodic series, telefilms and miniseries. WBTV supplies two or more shows to each of the six broadcast networks and produced 25 series on the primetime 2003-2004 schedule -- a record for the television industry.

Warner Home Video has been a market leader in DVD since the inception in 1997 and is the market share leader of TV on DVD.

<snip>

The other waves will hit in June, September and November. Maverick, one of Warner TV's earliest series, will be featured in the marketing and merchandising blitz sometime during the year, as will subsequent season DVD releases of Friends, West Wing and Smallville.

82. They did a hilarious send-up of "Bonanza", too
"Among the high points of 'Maverick' were the periodic satires of other TV shows, Western and non-Western alike, such as a takeoff on 'Gunsmoke' and another on 'Dragnet' (in which Bret intoned a narration in deadpan Joe Friday style). Perhaps the best was a wild parody on 'Bonanza', in which Bart encountered a ranching baron named Joe Wheelwright (played by Jim Backus), owner of the vast Subrosa Ranch, who was trying to marry off his three idiot sons Moose (Hoss), Henry (Adam) and Small Paul (Little Joe). On still another show, Bart, in trouble as usual, ran into Clint ('Cheyenne') Walker, John Russell and his deputy Peter Brown ('Lawman'), Will ('Sugarfoot') Hutchins, Ty ('Bronco') Hardin and Edd 'Kookie' Byrnes, all in one episode. None of them were any help whatsoever!"

74. MAVERICK ALERT! The Good Life TV network has Maverick...
On Thursday night, 10p.m. Eastern time apparently. I just discovered this last week. They have lots of earlier TV shows. See if your cable company has the channel, Adelphia does.

77. Alas, Comcast doesn't have it . . . :-(
Nick at Nite's TV Land used to show "Maverick" reruns, but I don't think they do anymore.

65. MAN, is he gorgeous!!
I love all his films, even the fluff ones like 'Move Over Darling'. My favorite has to be 'Support Your Local Sheriff', with 'The Americanization of Emily' coming in second.

20. Tough choice -
The Americanization of Emily - when he was young, sexy and beautiful.
Murphy's Romance - when he was old, sexy and beautiful.

Call me a romantic.

Oh, and his stellar performance in Victor/Victoria.

That's my FIRST crush you're talking about!

Getting older doesn't mean getting less sexy. Age is a state of mind.

31. I can't believe no one has mentioned
My Fellow Americans! Great movie with Jack Lemmon with some really memorable stuff in it.

I always think of his lyrics to his "Hail to the Chief".

Jack Lemmon had some great lines too. If only we could get them to catch blivet** like they did Dan Ackroyd!

57. Victor Victoria, but that is a favorite film , period.
also like "Support Your Local Sheriff" "Support Your Local Gunfighter", and "Skin Game" (lesser known but hilarious with a young Louis Gossett doing an escaped slave scam just after the Civil War; same cast of sidebar characters)

The one where he and Jack Lemmon play the ex presidents is funny too.

and anything he does with Julie Andrews

OK not a movie but old Maverick because I am old enough to remember it on TV and all of his TV series were great.

Favorite: The Americanization of Emily
2nd Favorite: Murphy's Romance
3rd Favorite: Victor/Victoria

I thought he was awfully good as well in Barbarians at the Gate.

I think a James Garner movie fest might be on schedule at my home this weekend.
