*I Got The Part* - Pozzo in 'Waiting for Godot'
We had our belated cast party for "A Christmas Story" today, and my director, whom I ran into immediately upon arriving, asked me if I wanted the part.

Another bonus is I got 2 videos with 2 of my performances in "A Christmas Story", which I guess I will watch tonight.

:D :bounce:

3. Thanks!
This week had sucked, being sicker than a green catfish, and immense deadlines at work... a decent end to a bad week.

And I guess you'll be hitting 1000 posts shortly! :toast:

It was either a severe cold, or a 'mild' flu, but I wouldn't have wished it on anyone, and I rarely get sick. Lucky for you, you missed my huge NyQuil thread last Tuesday or so, lol.

2. Congratulations! That's great!
Do you know how they're doing the play? The time I saw it at the ART, they did it more for comic effect, but I would imagine that it may not always be done that way.

56. It's generally thought of as a comedy
They tend to play Vladimir and Estragon for laughs, like they're Larry and Curly constantly berated and thwacked about by their inner Moe.

But I was mildly obsessed with Beckett when I was an oversensitive little twerp in middle school, and I was struck by the idea that all of Beckett's main characters-- Watt, Murphy, Malone, Krapp, Hamm and Clov in Endgame, etc.-- were all the same in essence, and the story is always about how one loses freedom of choice. The climax for me was his short story "Lessness" (in French "Sans," i.e. "without"), where as far as I can figure it the nameless main character can save himself if he can just move forward out of his present position-- and yet he never does, paralyzed by indecision.

Now that I'm an oversensitive little twerp in a Democratic on-line discussion board, I think it's an even more appropriate metaphor :-)

Anyway, good luck Zomby! And let us know how it comes out.

It was a women's version. The director drove me completely nuts, but it was a good production.

43. back in the day...
when the lounge (and all of DU) moved oh so much more slowly... there was this poster who had just a couple of posts more than I... I think we arrived at the crazy cyber land around the same time...

Back then, because the population was so much smaller than it is today... there was a sense of community... but even back then there was, for some, a long period of isolation before being recognized...

So this poster (cough cough) hits the 700 Club... gets recognized - and what seems like a ton of folks respond in the effort to get through the dread 700 club. Wow! Who is this zombyguy - who already is accepted as a real duer? Have to admit - while I am not usually "petty" as in envious of others - that caught my attention - we were just a few posts apart... but I went unnoticed for somewhile longer. I was thrilled when Uly posted a thread to congratulate me on 1,000 posts (til then I thought no one even knew that I was duer...) - til I realized that he was a lounge mod, and back then they all tried to keep an eye on that mile post and congratulate folks accordingly... while we are good friends now - my first public recognition (from Uly) was a rather obligatory one... left me rather envious of your recognition in the community.

Man - does that feel like an eon ago (though probably not much less than two years). And to admit it - on something per a cyber community - makes me feel silly and petty to admit. However - it is a testament to you that you were able to connect with folks at this wild and wooly place in a pretty quick fashion. Took some of us (or at least me) quite a bit longer. Kudos.

44. I had *no* idea
Thank you salin. All I remember about the time I made it to the 700 Club was that Jack Rabbit and I made it a race, lol. I never thought of myself as being greatly accepted or liked here (now, more than ever, lol!)

I remember being a nobody in the early days, intimidated by the names of WilliamPitt, LiberalTexan, ulysses, and other well-known DUers, and thinking I was always going to stay some obscure newbie. My first 50 or so posts were mostly in GD, and were these earnest, serious, analytical pieces. The Lounge was a good escape, but I rarely made use of it until a few months and a few hundred posts in. You are right about the sense of community... and the sense of relief and comfort we shared in knowing we weren't alone in questioning the legitimacy and sanity of the Bush occupation.

I have *always* respected and admired you. You are one of the intellectual giants of DU, and an invaluable asset to our common cause. Your wit is a treasure, and I love that you enjoy getting into the general mirth of the Lounge as much as the deep discussions in the heavier forums. What you just confessed to me is mind-blowing. It is eye-opening to learn what unintended impact our presence has on this place.

I really gave up all the political hard-hitting since November. Every time I try writing a piece for GD, my heart just isn't in it, and it shows by the lack of effort. I long ago gave up hoping a reasonable post would rise above the tinfoil paranoia and flamebaiting. But I never thought I would give up, period, posting anything substantial.

Maybe one day my heart will be in it again, and I will write those heavy pieces I used to in there. But for now, I am just glad I still have this place as a community who will accept me as I am, no matter how frivolous my contributions these days. I may yet still surprise.

But not as much as you just surprised me! :loveya:

50. pleased to be able to surprise you

the whole dynamics of this place have somewhat changed - as is natural when it grows so expontentially in a short period of time. But the community aspect, thankfully (and to much credit to the admin) has been maintained.

You make me blush per the "intellectual giant" - I certainly can not take that mantle. Just have a highly analytical mind that also retains news stories like a file cabinet - so as I read stories they niggle at my mind as I remember items from several years before - and the analytical part of the brain is compelled not only to try to draw back to mind the earlier story - but to analyze for possible relationships. The power of the community is the ability to forward the question (the tying together of stories and asking if there is any connection) - and get some incredible feedback, research and additional analytic treatment. Granted it is much harder to have these conversations these days because a) the gd forums move so much faster these days that the items don't stay up long to get feedback, and b) there is so much proclivity in the gd forums for flamewars that lightening rod threads crowd out other discussions.

For the past eight months my work life has sped up so much that I don't have the time to post at DU or to pursue issues with the eye for research and the tenacity to pursuing ideas that I once had. That is frustrating. However, the timing has allowed me to bow away enough to be able to more quickly renew my energy, interest and resilience to once again wander beyond my three touch stone forums (lbn, op-ed, and the wonderful lounge.)

However my long haitus from the gd lounges have made me almost a newbie again when I participate in those discussions or try to get new discussions off the ground. Too many who now frequent those forums I am as foreign a poster as any newbie. A rather odd experience - but a healty one.

I do hope that it isn't too long before you begin interacting in those arenas again. Not the combative zomby (not to knock your politically combative self - just a commentary that those forums need no more contentiousness than currently exists) - but the zomby who wrote some very thoughtful, informative and well researched pieces that gave more ammo to be used by those who take on, daily.

Zomby, I will always consider you a good friend. A "supporter" who expresses that both through humor and through direct (cyber) conversation. I appreciate your good naturedness at my more "proper"/"diplomatic" approach to the world - I feel accepted rather than pointed at as an anomoly in todays pop culture. And I appreciate your sharp mind that can see more than meets the eye - especially where political issues are involved. I do hope that in time, you jump back into the conversations in the gd forums that (minus confrontational moments) push folks to further think about, and be able to articulate their positions on issues. If we can't articulate amongst ourselves, then how are we ever going to persuade others? And as time marches on - in this second bush admin - the persuading of others regarding various issues that have the potential to hit hard in the personal life is where the "battle" will be won or lost. We (hopefully) play the role of getting those alternative perspectives out there. You have played a big role of that in the past (arguments that can expand folks understanding and make themmore willing to share those with colleagues). I hope that not too much more time will elaspe before you regularly take that plunge.

I don't think I ever modded in here - my first term was in the enviro forum, iirc - but even if I did I didn't ever do many of the obligatory congrats threads. Crew and Roni did/do a better job of those anyway. Your posts caught my eye pretty early on, and that thread was quite sincere. :) If you'll recall, I suggested your name to Kef around that time as someone who would make a good mod.

59. Pozzzzzzzzzzzooooooooooooooo!
My very favorite version of Godot (not that I'm familiar with so many of them) dates from the 50s, I think, or early 60s and stars Kurt Kasznar as Pozzo, EG Marshall as Vladimir and Bert Lahr as Estragon. It is wonderful. I had an LP set of it that someone walked off with, and I cannot find another copy anywhere. If you come across it (sometimes available in public libraries) give it a listen, you will love it.

A man who keeps another man on a leash. It's such a 21st century character.

Congrats!

63. Thanks SWMBO!
I have seen pics from the Bert Lahr version! Who can forget the cowardly lion as Estragon? I will look for that.

:spank: I got a leash for ya! ;-)

66. LOL
My actual debut was in Norfolk, VA, in 1987... Tina Howe's "Museum"... took a long break... but I like your version! I may hire you and matcom as my agents, because of his ability to promote ass, and your ability to cover one! :toast:

Well............ I better get an agent, a contract, a SAG card, and maybe a few dozen more of these things under my belt... then we'll see. ;-)

I appreciate the kind sentiment, and I would certainly let everyone know, lol.

Hope you are well these days. :hi:

70. Go for it!
You've obviously got what it takes. Looking forward to plunking down my $8.00 at the local multiplex to see your first feature film!

All is well in this little corner of Virginia. Hope you're doing fine out there on the West Coast. :hi:

69. Thanks New Jeff!
This will be the most challenging role yet. I can't do well if I don't push myself. :-)
