Farewell Polly, Welcome Molly:
As many of you know, last week I had the sad task of putting my old cat, Polly to sleep. She was 14, ill with either diabetes or a pancreatic tumor, and fading fast. I loved her tons. This was her in her fatter days, only a few months ago.

Yesterday, I went to the pound and found Molly (wanted to memorialize Polly, and since she's a redhead, gave her a nice Irish name.) Here's Molly:

Thank you all for the kind words and support last week. Things are always better with a kitten in the house.

1. Nice To See Another Rescue Cat With A Good Home
Sorry about Polly and I don't know if it will be better with a kitten in the house.

Busier, certainly....

2. Awwwwww a baby!
how cute! She looks like a Kat I had named Battlecat...so called because he was a scrapper and fought all the other Tom's in the neighborhood. It was as if he thrived on it. Battlecat lived to be 15...and it is sad when you loose them...but they are still with you in spirit. Now look...you have a new baby to love.

4. She's beautiful, Dookus!
What a little sweetie, & what a sweet name you gave her. It's nice to finally see what Polly looks like, too.

I had to take one of mine to the vet; she has kidney problems, now, too. Way high urea content, caused her to have a seizure, & she's having difficulty walking. We're trying to combat it by feeding her a very low protein diet. She's seventeen years old & has been with me through thick & thin.:-(

8. thanks, Annabel!
She's super-sweet. And the best part is, she still has that new-cat smell!

Sorry about your old girl. It's tough, isn't it? Here's a link to a list of commercial wet foods and their nutritional content. I found out it's hard to determine the protein/carb content of cat food.

Good luck with your girl!

5. I was told there are no female orange tabbies
That only males have the genes for orange tabbiness. But Molly appears to refute this rumor.
I'm sorry to hear about Polly. From her picture, she looks like a very amiable cat.

7. I was told it's very rare...
which makes her even more special.

She's a total cuddler. Her litter was found abandoned in a garage. She's been hand-raised by foster parents since she was a few days old. She's mellow and friendly and has a really loud purr motor.

She's also a scrapper - when she met my 6-month old, she was all ready to fight him, though he's twice her size. He just ignored her until she calmed down, and half an hour later, they were playing like old friends.

My three year old saw her, shrugged and wandered away.

18. I was afraid to suggest getting a new kitty
right away, when you first told us about Polly.
I'm so glad you did, though. I get my kitties
at the shelter, too, although being cats they're
never very grateful.

Lucky Molly.

19. The last time I had to put a cat down....
Edited on Sun Oct-05-03 11:37 PM by Dookus
I went directly from the vet's to the pound.

Other people need to wait. For me, I just want to start loving a new cat right away. Everybody's different.

on edit:

And no, the're NOT very grateful, are they, the little shits? Actually, Polly was. She had been dumped up in the woods and a co-worker found her nearly starved. I took her in, and she seemed grateful for it. She loved her food for the rest of her life! She wasn't gonna wander away from it.

21. Yeah, that's true. The last one I had to put down
went feral on me (I moved her from a busy
street where she thought she was the only
cat in the whole world to a residential area
where we may have 40 cats per block if there's
one. Anyway, one invaded her territory, came
into the house, and suddenly I became an enemy.
I couldn't save her.)

I waited probably four months before I just
had to get another kitty. The one I picked
is perfect for me. She's me with fur.

Kittens are so much fun. But since I only allow
myself one cat at a time--I'd have 20 otherwise--
I'm a little jealous.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

14. thanks NSMA...
I'm 42 years old and I've wanted an orange cat since I was about 15. I just love 'em, but whenever I found myself taking in or "needing" a new cat, an orange one wasn't available.

When I walked in and saw her, my first thought was PLEASE let it be a girl! And it was. And she was adorable and sweet and fluffy and gentle and all the good things. It was an easy decision.

FINALLY I have my orange cat :)

Actually both of them are. Sorry I missed the story of Polly. What a hard thing that is but she would be happy knowing you rescued a kitten.

15. Thanks, Muse....
actually, Polly'd probably be pissed off. She had no use for kittens. She was a prissy little lady who thought kittens were just too undignified to bother with.

20. Polly looks a lot like my Pooky
Love the 'Pookster' (our newest rescue). Molly is absolutely beautiful. Her eyes have that cute, mischievous look about them, and I am sure that she will bring you many years of wonderful companionship. Good for you, D, anyone who rescues 'fur children' is OK in my book. Give her an ear scratch for me.:hi:
