10. No, my butt isn't sore
It was only in the 50s in the morning so I had padded tights over my padded shorts. That and a good seat. It got up to about 62 in the afternoon so I took my tights off.

But, my knees are a little stiff and my right hand is a little tingly. I have padded gloves, but I did a lot of shifting and must not have had a good position.

22. Answers to your questions
I was in Illinois, west of Joliet, so it was flat with rolling hills, with a number of killer hills thrown in around the Illinois and Fox rivers. All country roads.

The weather was pretty cool in the morning (about 50), but the sky was blue and they predicted it would warm up, so I dressed in layers and stripped as I went. I had on tights over shorts, a long-sleeve jersey over a tank to and a windbreaker. It was about 62 and sunny in the afternoon so ended up with shorts, my jersey unzipped and my sleeves pushed up. I would rather have it be cool than too hot. There's only so much you can take off. ;-)

I went alone, but I always talk to other people. I rode for awhile with two women, but they went a shorter distance. At the end, a guy helped me tighten my seat post because it kept slipping down and I rode with him about the last 20 miles. I don't mind riding alone, though.

5. I think the sperm count will be very low...
Ladies usually have very low sperm counts, especially after bicycling 100 miles...

I did 70 miles on a bicycle in 1983. My legs still hurt.

12. LOL!
0 going in, 0 going out. :D

My legs actually aren't sore, might be a little tomorrow. Did you just go out and do it? I've been training for months, doing about 100-125 miles a week.

15. At the time...
I didn't own a car, I rode my bicycle everywhere...
From one end of the San Fernando Valley to the other and back, daily...call it 15-20 miles a day.

I did 70 miles as part of the Lake Castaic Tri-atholon. 73 miles bicycle, 1 mile swim, 26 mile run for 100 miles total. I finished. No place, I just finished.

You never said anything about the swim or the running. Just finishing all of that is quite an accomplishment, place or no place.

20. Actually the third for the season
Not bad considering I just started getting serious about riding this year. I did a self-directed one on the Katy Trail in August, one in Indiana/Michigan (some of it along Lake Michigan, 50 miles of hills) and this one was in central Illinois, west of Joliet.

Sadly, last event I'm registered for for the season, but I'll still be doing some long rides on my own to enjoy the fall colors.

No sperm count, but I did have first-day cramps, one of the things that made today so much fun. ;-)

11. Congrats! Centuries are very satisfying
Did I ever mention I met Howard Dean while riding on RAGBRAI ( -- across Iowa) in August? While climbing a hill, I passed a slow group all wearing Dean shirts. I waited at the top, and sure enough, Howard Dean was in the middle of the group. I thought that was a pretty neat touch.

Actually, I think I might do it next year. Any advice, tips?

On edit, sorry for being rude. That's actually VERY cool! I met him when he came to Chicago in August. He signed one of his signs.

19. No, it's at the end of July
For some reason I remembered it as the beginning of August. Their site is here.

This was my first time and I'd recommend finding a charter or cycling club to carry your gear. Almost everybody camps and it's really nice after a long day on the bike to find your luggage already at the campsite with beers already cold in the cooler.

Also, make sure you send your registration in on time or make sure the club does it. I think that April 1 is the deadline. Many years they have too many applications and conduct a lottery.

Also, you should probably have ridden at least 500 miles for the season with some hills (Iowa is not flat!) to be prepared.

Good luck!

16. Century!
Congratulations! I rode from about the mid-80s up until a couple years ago when I got burned out on it. Most I ever rode in one day was 50 miles or so and when I did, I bonked big time.

Was it one of those racing bikes with the teeny tires?

Edit: Oh yea, what was the makeup of your course? Mostly uphill/downhill? Mostly flat?

25. For the course
look at post #22. And, no, I have a Trek 7300 hybrid because I do rail-trails, too, which usually are crushed limestone, and a lot of city riding.

I might buy a racing bike, though, in the spring to use in these types of events. With a hybrid, you're in a much more upright position, which really SUCKS when you're going against the wind.

24. BTW, what made the ride hard today
was that I was going against a pretty stiff wind about 50 miles of it and cross-cutting the wind for about 25. It was pretty awful.

Also, my allergies were killing me, even though I had taken my medicine. The wind was blowing everything up and farmers were mowing and tramping down their corn stalks. My eyes got really swollen and were just streaming tears and I went through a whole pocket pack of Kleenex.

26. I went up to my County Courthouse last month.
It is only 45 miles away, but up Allegheny Mountain. Last year I took a quicker route and it was three hours up and two hours down. I wanted to try another route this year and it was four hours up and three hours down. I went via a proposed bike path that was not finished, waking along the gravel killed my time this year.

Someday I like to get up to 100 miles, but not in these mountains, I want to do 75 miles sometime this year or next, that is the distance between Johnstown and Pittsburgh, but getting over Chestnut Ridge slows me down. I have biked to the Ridge, but always stopped there. It is a five miles trip down to Blairsville and I know I could be in Blairsville in 30 minutes, the problem is getting back up the ridge from Blairsville.

Those Effin dogs that "don' belong nobody" did more damage 2 weeks ago than anyone could guess. either that or I'm going through another bout of medication side-effect myalgia again....
Everything HURTS! I can't bend over, my legs are sore, etc...

wish I could've ridden, it was beautiful today!

29. Too long
The wind sucked and my allergies were giving me fits. BUT, I did finish. Maybe I'll make better times next year, especially if I upgrade from my hybrid to a racing bike.

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. You should be feeling better two weeks after a fall. Maybe you should check with your doctor.

That was my last organized ride for the year, but I'm looking forward to getting out there to enjoy the fall colors. Hope you feel better soon and can get in a few more rides before the season ends.

30. Doctor will just put me on another pill....
You know the old song, "Pills to help you sleep, Pills to wake up with..." :-)

This is the beautiful time of the year here in Norhern Indiana. The crops are being brought in, the corn and beans are brown, the leaves are JUST beginning to turn, and the temp tomorrow is supposed to be near 70, so I'm gonna get a ride in, hell or high water....

I don't have allergies, so I can't fully appreciate trying to ride with streaming eyes and nose.

Next year, I'll do the Century. I'm already 1/4 the way there....
