Were you ever paddled in school?
I was. By Mrs. Trent. Second grade.

She had a big ole paddle that was displayed prominently in the classroom.

Wonder how women like her took it when paddling kids was outlawed.

3. That's a paddlin'
"Talking out of turn...that's a paddlin'. Looking out the window...that's a paddlin'. Staring at my sandals...that's a paddlin'. Paddling the school canoe...ooh, you better believe that's a paddlin'."

Never paddled, but carried upside-down across the room and spanked because I didn't hear my reading group being called.

I'm sure teachers like this were indignant when it became illegal to beat kids in school.

8. Once, in 3rd grade by Mrs. Starling.
She was a scary woman. On the first day of class she had a huge list of things NOT to do on the black board. One day someone did something wrong and she paddled every single one of us. We lined up and each got one wack with a wooden paddle. It didn't hurt physically but it was humiliating.

class. It was kind of embarrassing, but really didn't hurt physically. And it WAS because I did a fairly nasty thing to a classmate.

Now Sister Huberta was a different story. She seldom paddled us, but she routinely slapped our faces, went upside our heads with her fist, smacked our hands with a ruler, you get the picture. Whatever our little second grade selves were doing must have put her over the edge, may she rest in Hell.

10. No, but I saw it done often
My sixth-grade teacher used to give "bad" kids what he called "the books," which were either two or three giant atlases. The kid would lean up against the chalkboard, turn his head to the side and the teacher would basically beat the crap out of him in front of the entire class.

It was awful - he was a monster. My mother tried and tried to get him fired and no one ever seemed to care because he was somehow considered popular. He finally retired shortly thereafter.:grr:

I was six, pushed another kid into a snowbank, she squalled about it. Principal spanked me in front of the school janitor (just to add to the humiliation). When my folks found out they raised holy fucking hell with her. Nobody, but nobody, got to hit their kids but them!

The interesting thing is that there was still a debate about corporal punishment in schools going on then (mid 1990s), but now there are proposals to end corporal punishment at home. What a change.

15. Yes, in the 4th grade
by Mr. Podgess for not doing my homework. I told him I forgot to do it He gave me a weird speech. This was in 1967. He asked me what would happen if a US soldier in the jungles of Nam would come up against the enemy and find that he had forgotten to load his rifle. Instead of a 'BANG' he hears a 'click'. I told him I guess the guy would get killed. Mr. Podgess smiled and said 'yes, yes, that's right. Now bend over, lean on the desk and spead those legs'. He then hit me with his paddle a few times.

There were other times.....

In first grade my teacher taped me to my chair and taped my mouth closed.

16. I received 3 pops in 6th grade for
(you're not gonna believe this)

too many tardies.

I was a quiet, smart, shy student. Imagine my surprise when one day I'm called out of social studies to go to the assistant principals office. She told me I had received one too many tardies to a particular class. I could have a week of detention or 3 pops. I selected the pops. She had me bend over and gave me 3 hard wacks with a paddle she had hanging on her wall. It had holes drilled in to it. When I told my husband this story he told me the holes are to make the board move faster and hurt more. I had no idea. The whole thing was very surreal.

Yep, sure taught me a lesson. :eyes:

18. Senior year in high school for skipping journalism class...
to hang a banner for the pep rally. JOURNALISM CLASS and I was on the damned football team!!!!!!!!

I had no idea that the Principal knew who I was but apparently he did. He had been trying to bust me for ANYTHING for a while (it seemed). He said I was a spoiled brat (I think this had more to do with my older brother :smoke: than with me). So he says "You have a choice-a one day suspension on Monday which means you can't play in the game tonight or three whacks with the paddle" The paddle was wooden and had holes in it.

I, of course, couldn't miss the game that night so I said "I'll take the paddles". He told me he had to have someone observe so he left.....and came back in with the ROTC instructor. Now I am scared, my brother used to make fun of the ROTC crowd so I am thinking this guy can kill me in revenge and nothing will happen (hey I was 18).

WHAP! (hurt like hell and I have a HIGH tolerance for pain)

Hold it! (both of them were grinning like sh*t eating rats) Okay go.

WHAP!
(pause) Me:Well go ahead (I am DYING but I can see they are pissed)
WWWWWWWWWWWWHAPPPPP! (as hard as he could)
Is that it?

(steam is coming out of their ears)

No answer.........so I left. Went directly into the bathroom and cussed like I have never cussed before under my breath. They were waiting when I walked out (pain was mostly gone).

Me: I had to go to the bathroom I didn't want to do it on your desk.

Walked right by them.

:)

My brother showed me his trick of wearing four or five pairs of underwear to school, because he KNEW he would be paddled at least once a week. My paddlings were less common than that, thank god, but the tip worked. (We had a teacher who used a paddle with drilled holes in it too.)

22. Yes More than I care to remember
I was paddled, slapped, thrown into lockers, threaten by one teacher that he would "kick my ass", I was in 7th grade and about 100 pounds.. One teacher used a wooden dowel about 3/4 inch in diameter. He got me on the tail bone once and it hurt like hell, but he said he didn't get me good so he hit me again.
One nun whacked me on the palm of my hands three time with a shoe horn. I had one teacher take the gum out of my mouth with his fingers, shoved the gum up my nose, twirled it around and shoved it back in my mouth.
Yeah, school was a blast..lol. I could write a book on my school career. And to be honest..I was not that bad of a kid.

23. No--I got thumped
Miss Schmidl was a back thumper. She'd come up behind you and thump you hard in the back. Worse was the psychological damage. She'd make you feel like the lowest thing that crawled--in front of the whole school, she'd comment on your moral failings. I was one of the kids she liked. I remember once she hugged me when I retuned to school after having pneumonia for several weeks(2nd Grade) and I thought I was going to faint. I was scared to death of her. The kids she hated, she made life miserable for. Looking back, I can't imagine how most of them made it out of school with any self-esteem at all. This was in the mid-1950's in a one-room country school and the idea of self-esteem was unheard of.

My husband was hit on the head with a geography book by his 4th grade teacher. She stuffed another kid in a trash basket. Halfway through the year, she abruptly left the school for a sojourn in the state hospital.

In kindergarten. I picked up a rock the size of my fist and clobbered a girl with it. By the time I was in school paddling was already restricted, so only the principal was allowed to spank, and only with the school nurse present. I still remember standing in front of Principal Williams gargantuan oak desk, with my toes on the "spanking line" and my hands gripping the edge of the wood with everything I had. The funny thing is, I remember him coming around the desk with his drilled paddle (it seemed as big as a boat oar at the time), but I don't actually remember getting spanked.

I think I was in second grade when California finally did away with paddling once and for all, and I remember all of the kids cheering on the playground when we found out about it. We thought we could do ANYTHING after that without getting into trouble...boy were we wrong :)

I also had a couple of teachers that still believed in putting kids in dunce caps on stools in front of the classroom to "shame" them for misbehaving, I had another with a wooden "jail" box that he'd lock misbehaving kids in (it was pitch black inside and claustrophobically small), and another old biddy who liked to pick kids up by their ears for infractions as small as answering a question wrong (she was eventually fired, and she and the school district were sued after damaging a kids hearing).

It's hard to believe today, since any of those infractions would get the teacher fired and the district sued in a heartbeat, but back then those were considered to be acceptable mainstream educational practices. Sheesh!

40. Yes..and this is true, a paddle actually broke on my butt!!!!
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 04:17 PM by rasputin1952
The girls were never paddled, but me and some of the other guys were regulars! I got whacked at least 3x a week.

This was in a Lutheran Grammar School, in Flushing NY.

The 7/8 grade teacher/principal wuld occasionally whack me on the back of the head too, when I got lost in "Bible Reading". He had one of those Gold Tone 18" rulers, and he'd hit the other kids with the flat. I got the edge...:(

He was a sadistical SOB, and to this day, I truly believe he was in the Bundt, or the American Nazi Party...:(

On edit: there were two paddles, one was actually 'factory made' and was about 12" long and 3" wide, a little over a quarter inch thick... it had "Board of Education" stamped in red on it and it stung like hell. The other was 10" long and 3" wide, it was over a 1/2" thick and had 7 holes in it to make it more aerodynamic....don't want any slow down from air pressure! That is the one that broke on my butt! The teacher, 5/6 grade; was a woman that was Teutonic in appearance, standing over 6ft, blonde hair in an extremely tight knot on the back of head. She wailed that thing down from as far up as she could reach, and put some serious POWER behind that sucker! I braced, heard a THWACK, and w/in a second searing pain made it to my brain...before I heard the resounding sound of wood hitting asbestos tile....I had broken the tool of intense pain and embarassment...I had become a minor hero on that day...:D

43. No, but I saw other kids get paddled
I had an eigth grade science teacher who paddled boys. They had their choice of 3 paddles-one had airholes in it, one was really thick, and the other was sort of like a ping-pong paddle. According to the boy with ADD in my class, the last one hurt the least. He made girls give him neck massages, which eventually led to his firing.

When Ken Skar (I like to use his name since he's a scumbag who deserves to be on a sex offender's list, but isn't) asked me to rub his neck, I told him "Hell, no" and asked him if he'd ever met my dad's lawyer. He never asked me again, but found girls from poor families to pick on.

Not only was it apparently painful, but also stigmatized. I was so scared about being labled a bad kid that I never even had to stay in for recess.

49. paddled, punched, and choked
seriously. 3 different teachers, all elementary school. the "puncher" was an elderly teacher with a mean ass temper that should have retired years before this happened. she lost it on a group of us, and i was the unlucky one she caught. punched me right in the face -- then i got told by the other teachers not to tell my parents about it or "i would be in big trouble." i think we were taking too long to get in line for lunch. big discipline problem there, huh?

the "choker" was another mean-tempered teacher that couldn't hack elementary school kids. i think that one might have been over a messy desk that i didn't clean. grabbed me by the neck and slammed me back and forth in my desk chair. every kid in that classroom was saucer-eyed, and no one made a sound.

the paddling was a run-of-the-mill principal thing that i and 2 other friends all received for some stupid shit. we probably deserved that one, but the punching and choking are the ones that stick out in my mind.

61. well...
some of the teachers have probably passed away due to old age by now , and if not i'm sure they're living a miserable life somewhere -- hell, they were miserable back then, i doubt they're any happier now. that's good enough for me.

63. As long as they aren't making some other kids' lives hell...
So you've moved from the town?

If I lived near someone who'd treated me like that, I'd be tempted to glare at them every time I saw them.

66. I was choked too!
By Mrs. Gallop, a revolting music teacher, when I was in third grade. I honestly don't know what my infraction was, but I'd be willing to bet that it was because I talked back to her or questioned her authority. But she put down her auto-harp--who was she, anyhow? Mother Maybelle Carter?--and put her fat little fingers around my lovely, delicate neck.

Of course I never said anything because I felt like I had committed such a serious transgression. A choking, indeed!

But My World History teacher had an interesting punishment. He had pillories in the classroom. If he caught you insulting somone, you had the choice of 20 min. detention or being pillorie'd for two minutes. We caught him insulting one of the students one time, and for the next two minutes, he delivered his lecture from the pillories.

Just like olden days, only without the angry crowd pelting you with shit and rotten produce.

53. I took a canoeing class...
so I paddled in school!

but to your original question, no. It was pretty much banned as a practice by the early seventies (when I was in grade school.) I remember a lot of teachers still prominently displayed "The Board of Education" though.

55. When I was in Jr High, I saw a girl get spaked in front of
the entire cafeteria by the principal. Apparently she'd used an expletive; but I'm not sure whether it was directed at him or muttered under her breath.

She was a wild child, no doubt about it; but I thought the principal went beyond the beyond in humiliating her in front of the whole school. When I told my parents about it, they were totally supportive of any "police action" necessary. This guy was a real creep, though. I once saw him bellow at a girl who'd been diagnosed with Tourettes Syndrome to stop shaking her head.

This was in 1971 or 72. We had a dress code which had recently been loosened to allow girls to wear "nice pants suits" from November through March, skirts up to 6 inches above the knee, and no jeans under penalty of amputation (ok...it wasn't that bad).

56. Yes. We had a choice in High School.
1 paddle for every day of detention. You got to choose one or the other.

How fucked up is that?

Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 06:32 PM by Misunderestimator
regularly... once even for wearing a pair of pants to school, (and, on edit, once when a boy picked a fight with me and hit me... I didn't even hit him back, was just defending myself by covering myself with my arms). After that we moved out to a small town with small minds and it was still a pretty regular occurrence for the smallest of infractions (like being a minute or two late for class) until about 8th grade. A coach/science teacher's paddle broke in two while he was paddling a boy... and this was some special paddle too... he even drilled holes in it to give it more velocity. Assholes all of them.

65. That was reserved for my Father
If a teacher had laid a hand on me like that, not that they ever did, my father would have gone ballistic. Not because I would have deserved it but because it was his his sole right and prerogative to lay a smack down on me when needed. It would have been a get out of jail free card if a teacher did it to me.

Holy Christ - these stories are making my hair stand on end. If anybody came at me with a fucking paddle, they'd be flat on their back, no matter what grade I was in. And I went to Catholic school for 12 years!

72. My school had an infamous math teacher
known for spanking the good-looking girls. He was always inventing some infraction. When he paddled the girls, his face would get beet red. He was so, so creepy.

The only "trip to the office" I can remember was getting three whacks for tardiness after lunch period. A group of kids went outside of town to a straight stretch of highway and raced cars. I was one of the stragglers coming in late.

74. The football coach used a spark plug wire
I kid you not, in the late sixties and early seventies. It left whelps.

Even the principals had long wooden paddles and when they used it, they didn't hold back.

75. All the time.
Six times in first year, three times in third, a couple of times in forth and once in sixth.
My first teacher was a petty dictator. She had the children constantly ratting on each other for minor mis-behaviours, as well as playing against each other for her favour. An all together miserable year for those of us she hated. Plus on top of all that, she stank!

79. Never, but that did happen at my school.
Flint, Michigan in the 80's. Only they couldn't do it in front of other kids, so they would go out in the hall to do the deed. You could still hear it though. The teacher would grab the paddle and the poor victim, and a few minutes later you'd hear swiiiiiish pow! The paddles couldn't be homemade, only school issue, and there were no holes. I did accidently witness it one time when a teacher sent me out on an errand, and another teacher paddling a kid didn't see me there.
