Miracle shot lifts Guilford -92 foot shot wins game in OT
http://www.news-record.com/sports/college/bkcrdp_020105.htm
Guilford 91; Randolph-Macon 89 (OT): Jordan Snipes connected on a desperation floor-length throw as the buzzer sounded in overtime to lift Guilford past Randolph-Macon 91-89 in men's college basketball Monday night in Ashland, Va.

With 0.6 seconds remaining in overtime, Randolph-Macon connected on a foul shot to take a one-point lead. But the second shot missed and Snipes, Guilford's sophomore guard, connected on the baseball-like throw down the court.

--Different article on the shot--

Six-tenths of a second remains in overtime. Randolph-Macon guard Adam Krovic hits the first of two free throws to give the Yellow Jackets an 89-88 lead. R-MC coach Mike Rhoades does what most coaches would, what Guilford coach Tom Palombo said he would have done: He tells Krovic to miss the free throw.

Krovic does, the ball comes off soft, under the basket and into the hands of Quakers guard Jordan Snipes, a former high school quarterback. Snipes, already with 31 points, hurls the ball baseball-style, it kisses the rafters and drops cleanly through the hoop 92 feet away.

"I've never seen anything like that in my life," said Krovic, who finished with 11 points. "Every logical explanation says you make the first and miss the second. There's no way that was going to happen. It was unbelievable."

2. So, help out the sports idiot here.
What's the purpose of missing the second shot? Is it to get the timer starting as soon as the ball misses with the hopes of ending the game, as opposed to making the basket and then giving the other team the ball with the full amount of time still left?

Anyway, I love the full court shots. That's the only part of basketball that's interesting - when a dude launches one full court to win a game. I remember seeing a lot of those on the sports news when I was a kid.

3. The clock starts when it is touched on a miss
so the thinking here is to miss the second one. With only :06 left the chances of any reasonable shot being able to be taken are slim and none..........but then there is always that one time. The Guilford coach said that that is what he would have done too-standard practice.

In the pros (and major college) they determined that there has to be at least 3 tenths of a second left and the ball can only be tipped not caught and shot-they did that to set a standard so it wasn't up to the referee to decide.

The way the second article is written it makes it sound like it hit the rafters (if only a little bit) which technically should nullify the shot (I think) but the coaches probably didn't want to turn this into a trial so they let it pass-or it could just be the way it is written.

4. I saw it on ESPN this morning.
It was numbers 9, 7, 5, 3, and 1 on their "Top 10" plays list. What a Hell of a shot!
