Obligatory dinner menu thread: tonight's dinner is:
Curried Lentils over basmati rice with garlic butter ghee
The lentils are cooked with curry spices, chilis, cilantro, tomatoes, onions and tonight I cut up an eggplant and added that.

It is a very tasty dish, perfect for a chilly evening.

Makes good leftovers, too.

what is cooking at your house?

17. Trader Joe's rocks!! We shopped there today...
They were making samples of chocalate chip pancakes -- they are incredible!!

We do a lot of our shopping at Trader Joe's. We started shopping there during the big supermarket strike here in So. Cal. Once the strike was over, we just continued to do most of our shopping there.

Check out their carrot cake and cheesecakes -- very good.

Also, I love the Chicken Masala frozen dinners.

6. lentils and rice keep real well in the pantry, come in large sizes
and are cheap!!!!!!!!!

that is how! tonight I used some lentils I bought at the Indian market but if I use plain old brown lentils, it is really a cheap meal.

12. don't buy microwave popcorn!
Even gourmet is much cheaper the old fashioned way. If you really want to waste half of it in the microwave buy a micro-popper, they work reasonbly well, otherwise use a good heavy pan with a couple tablespoons of oil, cover the bottom with kernals one layer deep and pop while shaking (don't forget lid!) until done. Salt lightly. (or add a ton of real melted butter and salt heavily  )

Don't bother with a hot air popper - makes popcorn that tastes like packing foam - bleh.

7. Tortilla Soup
Homemade chicken broth, peppers, onions, tomatos, secret spices simmered to perfection then crispy (home)fried tortilla strip "noodles", queso Menonito and a squeeze of lime. With Negra Modelos, of course.

Also good for a cold night. Or a hot one.
