SHELBURNE, Vt. -- The president of the Vermont Teddy Bear Co. is defending its straightjacket-clad Valentine's Day offering, over the protests of advocates for the mentally ill.
Elisabeth Robert said her company will keep selling its the $70 "Crazy for You" toy bear, which also comes with its own commitment papers.
Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas and the state Human Rights Commission are among those who have criticized the bear as being is in poor taste and insensitive to the plight of those with mental illness,
Robert said she's sorry if the product offends anyone, but free expression is at stake. She also said the bear is meant as a funny Valentine's Day greeting and has been popular with customers.
