1. Yeah,

At first I thought his preaching was cute. But as he's getting older he's losing the creative spark. So I guess he HAS to lean on religion for new ideas.

But no matter how bad BC might be, it pales in comparison to Mallard Filmore. WTF was with the fish and New Years resolutions? Mallard normally isn't funny, but todays strip was so bad it nearly burned a hole in the paper.

5. I wonder if Mr. Hart had a stroke in his frontal lobe
B.C. used to be consistently hilarious. Back in the 70s, it was one comic you had to read on a regular basis.

But I don't even recognize it anymore. His fundie stuff is not only not funny, it doesn't even MAKE SENSE--not even within an off-kilter, fundie frame of reference. They just read like the ramblings of a religious maniac.

19. Why read it then?
As I have gotten older, I find I waste less and less time reading things that I know in advance I am going to be offended by. Which isn't to say I am uninterested in a well-formulated argument, but we're talking about the comics, here.

4. Then you haven't seen "Prickly City"
Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 12:03 PM by CBHagman
The Washington Post just added "Prickly City," which is yet another puerile, amateurish right-wing strip. One of last week's strips called Michael Moore as a swine, and an earlier one supported Ann Coulter -- a strip supporting a McCarthyism defender in a paper whose greatest political cartoonist, Herblock, coined the term McCarthyism.

I wouldn't mind Johnny Hart putting Christian material in B.C. if he were just putting forth the Gospel, but he ruins everything just parroting the usual right-wing, capitalism-and-bigotry line, with a dollop of misogyny. He's openly anti-Muslim, anti-feminist and anti-public school.

6. I scan Prickly City
Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 12:40 PM by CatholicEdHead
daily on Yahoo each morning. It MAKES NO SENSE with the characters. Just a girl with pigtails and her dog spouting right wing talking points day after day. No humor or real point. While Boondocks and Doonesbery are not often humorous, there is quite often a point in the daily panels. Not with Prickly City.

Edit: Yahoo voters always vote that one down. It is usually a 2.5 out of 5.

Here is the link to today's BC:

That strip might have been a little more topical 20 years ago, but it still wouldn't be funny.

edit: Clarification, I'm referring to BC.

8. Prickly City is lame
Edited on Sun Jan-30-05 02:38 PM by GoddessOfGuinness
I've read it every day since the WP added it to their comics, waiting for it to be funny any day now.

The trouble is, it attempts to poke fun at the Democratic platform. What's funny about wanting to help homeless people? Is there amusement to be found in wanting clean air and water, and being concerned about endangered species? What's so hilarious about not wanting to invade a country under false pretenses, murdering and maiming thousands of innocent people?

When the WP added this strip, it was sandwiched between Boondocks and Candorville, which is another liberal-view comic. After the first week, they'd switched Boondocks and For Better or Worse. I suspect some rethuglican didn't like being surrounded like that...

14. I just looked at Prickly City
Didn't even hear about it until just now.

It is like Mallard Fillmore, lame.
(Although the digs at the "Can you hear me now?" cell phone dweeb was funny.)

20. Give feedback to the Post.
I think the e-mail address is comics@washpost.com.

Given the fact that the Post declined to run some Boondocks strips, they more than deserve to hear if readers think Prickly City was a bad choice. I imagine they've gotten an earful from the right wing regarding For Better or for Worse (promotes tolerance, including towards gays), Boondocks, and others. Non Sequitur is generally liberal but doesn't hesitate to gore someone else's ox.

9. loath or hate but...
it doesn't seem logical for an atheist to detest anything or anyone.
The literal definition of 'detest' would make such an act illogical.
What Deity could you call on?

17. Ah.
In that case, it was rather grey, at best.

But an earlier strip where he had a Menorah melt into a cross, that one was a direct slam at Judaism.

18. I think it's pretty obvious, personally...
The menorah being a clear precedent for that kind of behaviour. The denial was awfully tongue-in-cheek as well.

21. With anyone else, I would consider the SLAM thing a stretch
But Hart has a history of weird, inscrutable strips that deliver a bizarre contemporary "Christocode" to his fundie asshole readers. And so I fully believe he meant to "slam" Muslims in the strip.
