"Do you deserve to be wealthy?"
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 09:31 AM by Bertha Venation
This is the lead statement on a radio commercial for www.wendi.com. I guess she's some kind of super self-help guru; her ads are for "quit being lazy" and "do you get enough sleep" and "you can be rich" and stuff like that.

I heard this statement this morning for the millionth time. But for the first time, I thought, "who deserves to be wealthy?"

In my opinion everyone deserves not to be impoverished. But does anyone deserve to be rich?

edit: I just went to the Wendi site: she's a hypnotist.

2. I don't even want to be wealthy
I just want to be able to provide for my kids and get them grown. I went to a hypnotist once.. to stop smoking. It was so hokey I couldn't stop giggling let alone relax. I don't know.. maybe I'm one of those people who can't be hypnotized?

4. I don't have a problem with that statement....
I know people who have worked their tails off in multiple jobs, who have put in countless hours devoting themselves to their careers and to what they do. They've worked much harder than I have and been more focused on their careers and their jobs than I have. They've paid more attention to their investments and what they do with their money. I would say without a doubt that those people deserve to be more wealthy than I am. That doesn't make them better than me or anyone else (nor does it make them worse than me or anyone else). But it does entitle them more to whatever rewards come from their hard work. We all choose to pursue our riches in a variety of different ways and means. If someone chooses to pursue monetary wealth through legal means and hard work then I would say they deserve to be wealthy. It's just not my bag or my concern.

10. Her commercial is directed toward
the poor. Only the poor think money is the answer to all their problems. I am poor but know that money is not the answer to our problems. An even playing field and enough food, housing, clothing and security is what I think we all need. Enough to give our children a good education. Enough to keep us well and warm. Enough to get a few extras now and then and to take care of us when we get old. An even playing field for all. A redistribution of the wealth in this country.:kick:

11. "Deserve" and "wealthy" are unrelated
I lived for a year with a roommate who was a millionaire. He got that way by buying the right piece of paper with the correct sequence of numbers on it. Did he "deserve" it? Guess so. He won that lottery.

He told me something I will always remember: "Money cuts two ways. If you don't have it, you are always trying to get it. If you have it, you always worry about who is trying to take it from you behind your back."

And money is fickle. People get gobs of it just by having the right parents. Others, who make huge contributions to humankind like inventing basic computer code, make nothing. Some people get fabulously rich, but die broke (think prizefighters).

 is right!

15. Frankly, I think this concept
of "deserving wealthy/poor" needs to be written up in DSM. It's SICK and we see the fruits all around. They're NOT pretty or edible.

17. It was an accident.
To the guy with AIDS living in a cardboard-and-plasic-sheeting shack in Haiti I am very very wealthy. To George Bush and his friends I am nobody.

Overall, I may just be lucky. (Thank you God, or whatever force landed me on this shore...)

Horrors, just imagine, I could've been a Christian Right Wing Republican Asshole having sexual fantasies about Sponge Bob. That would've sucked... big time.

19. I AGREE! Then add in that...
...a scientist exploring a cure for AIDS may make $250,000 a year. But a pro (football, basketball, baseball) player makes TENS OF MILLIONS! Who has the greatest potential for an awesome impact on humanity?

Money is fickle...and relative....
