Substitute teacher accused of taping second-graders' eyes, mouths shut

The Chicago Public Schools are moving to fire a substitute teacher who allegedly taped shut the mouths and eyes of second-graders at a Morgan Park school earlier this week, officials said.

The 45-year-old substitute, whose name was not released, was working her first day at Esmond Elementary School, 1865 W. Montvale, on Tuesday when the tape came out, officials said.

As many as 10 children and their parents have told school officials that the woman put clear tape across the students' mouths and eyes, schools spokesman Mike Vaughn said.

School officials found out about the alleged incident Wednesday and called the Chicago Police and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, both of which are now investigating. No charges have been filed, police said.

A second-grader first tipped off the school that something was amiss after school Tuesday. That student told an assistant principal the teacher had told her to "sit your a-- down," officials said.
