11.  Naughty, naughty.
You are going to upset someone. So what if the little snakes and mice are taking up permanent residence.

However, we let ours out, but she doesn't go outside the fenced area. We had to put our big old guy (canine) to sleep a while back and she didn't want to go out because the yard wasn't as friendly. Now she has a new excort, a wonderful St. Bernard. Now, about those baby birds,... oops!

Two are great hunters who occasionally bring me a tasty mouse. I don't want to offend them, but mice treats are getting rather old. So maybe a trip outside would be a good idea.

20. Mine are all out
Nope, whoops back in,,,I have been on DU since 2002 and posting since 2004. Owner of five cats(adopted)and one dog. I live across the street from the county cat shelter and I can't tell you the number of cats I have taken in, brought back to health, FIXED, and found homes for. And this bozo thinks ..well, I don't know what he thinks.ut....
Pal, get a soap box and try to raise money to neuter cats,..this will cut down on the number of cats and the number of birds killed by cats.

23. He thinks that
cats allowed outside will denude nature of all it's little birds and bunnies and squirrels, etc.

Even though one pregant female and her offspring can be responsible for 420,000 cats in 7 years and cats have been around for HOW long? And for how long were they expected to be outdoor only? If they were a threat we wouldn't have to worry about them killing birds or other creatures. There wouldn't be any left.

BTW...this is PETA propaganda. I've seen it on their site. You're awful if you keep a cat in the first place but if you do and let it out at all you're destroying wildlife.

I've got 6 cats. One goes out. She won't stay inside. If you try to keep her in she pisses all over everything. She's fixed, she's had her shots, if she wants out that's a better choice than stinking up my house. And if she wants to eat the occasional bird that gets too close, it's that much less cat food I have to buy.

I do have to say, though, that when she brought home HALF a snake I wasn't real happy.

32. Your are a sweety too
I have taken in cats my whole life, fed, neutered them and shots. I really can't count the number of cats I have had. A couple of years ago, we took in one more cat, and he was was really disruptive to the household. I knew I couldn't keep him, so I took him to the shelter, after fixing and having him get his shots. I cried so much dropping him off. I have never brought an animal to a shelter in my life.

I was miserable the whole day and that night I slipped on the cellar stairs, fell the entire flight, and the ambulance had to be called because I was so banged up. I know I was so distraught over having to do that to that cat, but we had eight at that time and he was so disruptive to the rest of the household. And this guy says I don't care about animals. sigh..

38. We're down from 13.
With the oldest being 19 and the youngest being about 15. Two are diabetics.

As they go from age and a couple from cancer, we haven't been taking in any more because we are also getting older and may not outlive a kitten (or a puppy) and don't want to take the chance on possibly leaving a household of animals that would have to be euthanized because nobody else would want them.

When we're down to none, we'll foster for the local shelter. This gives an animal a chance to live long enough to find a permanent home without obligating us to its lifetime. We get to share the good stuff with that plan. Can't do it right now because we have too many of our own.

If your neighbor is shooting the wildlife, why not call the police or the aspca?

And from many of the posts on these threads, apparently your cat is a rarity ... in that it doesn't bring you presents of dead and semi-dead animals and drop them on your porch.

That all those dumb songbirds either eat the insects we need to pollinate our food crops or they eat the earthworms we need to keep the soil aerated...when they aren't eating the seed that's supposed to grow into our food.

Those things are a menace to mankind.

67. Cats stopped us from being murdered....
in the middle ages. The black death woulda gotten a lot more people if not for cats keeping down the rat population.

Cats were considered sacred by the Egyptians because they were one of the first agricultural societies and stored grain in silos, which attracted rodents. Cats thinned the rat-herd and kept the Egyptians in food. Then the Phonecians stole some cats from the sacred site around the Nile so the cats could control the rats on their ship. That's how the felines spread all over Europe.

So who knows how many of us might not have been born if our ancestors had starved to death or died of Bubonic plague? Personally, I despise rats with the same passion people have for snakes and spiders (both of which are way cool, BTW), so my kitty is queen around here!
