1. Never in the same year
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 12:22 PM by fertilizeonarbusto
and don't hold your breath. I think he'll win Actor, and Morgan Freeman get his looooooooooooooooong overdue Oscar for Supporting Actor. Ask me in a few days after I'm done crunching numbers and I have the odds. Yes: Morgan Freeman has never won.

4. OK
Just for general info, I've been doing this for ages and this year is the most totally wide-open I remember.

3. It's never happened.
I doubt it. I think Jamie Fox WILL win Best Actor. But not Best Supporting Actor, also. Probably Morgan Freeman.

5. Terrya is right...
as usual. Fox will win Best Actor, but not Supporting Actor. But it's a real triumph for him to be nominated in both.

7. Yup-very rare
Fay Bainter-1938, Best Actress, "White Banners", Best Supporting Actress, "Jezebel" Won for the last.
Teresa Wright-1942 B.A., "The Pride of the Yankees", B.S.A., "Mrs. Miniver", won for the last.
Barry Fitzgerald-1944, B. A. "Going My Way", B.S.A., "Going My Way"-wone for the last. Yes, you read right, it's the same movie. The rules were changed after this.
Jessica Lange-1982, B.A. "Frances" B.S.A. "Tootsie", won for the last.
Sigourney Weaver-1988, B.A. "Gorillas in the Mist", B.S.A. "Working Girl" did not win.
Holly Hunter-1993 B.A. "The Piano" B.S.A. "The Client" Won for the first.
Emma Thompson-1993, B.A., "The Remains of the Day" B.S.A. "In the Name of the Father" did not win.

12. I think it'll be the other way around...
Foxx will win best supporting, not best actor. I think best actor will go to Don Cheadle or maybe Johnny Depp (to make up for past nominations when he didn't win - seems they always do "make ups" with the Oscars). Though Morgan Freeman probably deserves the best supporting more. The Academy is so screwed up, constantly trying to fix its previous errors.

14. yeah
that's quite common. But it seems impossible for anyone other than Foxx to win Best Actor. I haven't seen Ray yet, but absolutely everybody I know who's seen it, as well as all the critics, say Foxx will win.

I think this is about as close to a sure-thing as it gets when it comes to the Oscars.

6. Never happen, no matter WHO it was.
The Oscars is a PR stunt for the entertainment industry and nothing more. It's also a "pretending not to be snide" Hollywood version of the Friar's Club, except without the obvious respect behind the farce. At any rate, they don't hand out two awards like that to the same person in the same year, no matter what roles he/she plays.

8. If it's just "a PR stunt", I can't think of a better stunt than to do some
thing that's never been done before AND will create controversy over why was Morgan Freeman snubbed. The talk will go on for weeks. It'll create 2 sides, Jamie DESERVED both and Morgan DESERVED his, and antagonism is BIG PR.

9. True, but it's also an internal popularity contest.
And Foxx hasn't been around long enough to win one of those. Generally, most performers don't win an Oscar for the movie they just did, but for the last eight movies they did that got snubbed.

10. Ting! We have a winner
And take the popularity contest thing seriously. That's the biggest thing against Leo this year: people in the industry don't like him. I call it the Tom Cruise Syndrome.

13. Well...also, let's face it, it's who's marketing campaigns...
are the most successful.

The studios will now go into high gear with advertising as to how they can best sway the Academy voters. Some big money is behind the advertising, as it impacts the box office and future DVD sales. An Academy Award can affect those things.
