10. here you go
Allows you to execute common commands (like page forward/backward, close tab, new tab) by mouse gestures drawn over the current webpage, without reaching for the toolbar or the keyboard. You can also use click-only "rocker" gestures which are even faster than drawn gestures.

17. Mozilla is a package of several things
Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 11:22 PM by StrongbadTehAwesome
Firefox is Mozilla's browser available on a stand-alone basis (and with a slightly different look). Mozilla includes an IRC chat program, an Outlook-like e-mail program, and other stuff.

Edit: argh, freeper-like punctuation...

18. Mozilla is...
Edited on Sat Jan-22-05 11:23 PM by salvorhardin
Mozilla was formed out of the ashes of the Netscape browser development team. After trying for the better part of a year to create Netscape 5 with the current Netscape code they gave up, threw it all away and spent another year creating the Mozilla suite (browser, e-mail, more). Most of the time was spent creating the Gecko rendering engine which is the heart of the web browser that actually draws the page you see. The front end of the browser (all the clicky clicky stuff like the back and home buttons) was done in a variant of Javascript they created called XUL. This all became Netscape 6. A while later, part of the Mozilla people started work on the Phoenix standalone web browser which was intended as a lighter/faster web browser for those who didn't want a full blown software suite. They changed the name along the way to Firebird and then had to change it again to Firefox when the Firebird database people got mad.

Most of this can be found on the Mozilla web site starting here:

32. Cool tip---I've been using Firefox a couple of months,
and loving it. Especially after I got the hang of "tabbed browsing"--much better concept than separate windows.
I have been using " Ctrl T " to open new tabs. You can also use " Ctrl + " or " Ctrl - " to increase or decrease font size on different pages, something I seem to do a lot and it's easier than going through the " View Text Size" menu options.

I couldn't be happier with it. And howbout that tabbed browsing? I'll never go back to non-tabbed again :bounce:

Plus since I started using Firefox now when I run an Adaware or spybot scan the amount of spyware and crap found has been reduced by I'd say at least at 3/4 of what use to be found.

24. I've had firefox for over a month.
It's more secure and much faster than IE and has some pretty cool add-ons. There is a small extension that makes tabbed browsing less buggy another that incorporates a media player in a small tool bar at the bottom of the page. Starting to give Macrosoft a run for their money!

Firefox is supposed to run cleaner, lighter and use less machine resources. But Mozilla is nicer to use in my opinion.

But I can understand everyone's excitment about firefox if they have been using IE. I remember back when, when I switched to Mozilla it was like manna from heaven compared to IE.

29. Yes and no
Yes it will import your favourites from IE; it will ask you if you want to do this when you install it. No, it won't stop you getting lots of spam. Once you're on a spammer's list of addresses there's nothing you can do other than try to filter them out, or drop the address and get a new one.

31. I Tried FireFox Two Months Ago
While FireFox is faster, probably mainly due to a smaller streamlined program, it just wasn't as user friendly as IE. If I'm going to change browsers, I still want the creature comforts that I'm used too, and programmers are developing software with it in mind. Until then, I'm not walking out on the ledge for a few nanoseconds of speed.

34. I felt that way when I started
I was much more used to the AOL browser-and for the life of me can't see how anyone would think that clunky IE is more user friendly (Not to dis ya-I say that because I was realising the other day how clunky the WMP 10 is-after all this time.) I never really used IE. I would occasionally open and run the firefox stuff. Finally, the AOL browser seemed like the POS it really was.

And it's not just for speed. There's a little matter of browser and computer security. Since IE is so deeply integrated with the Windows Explorer, a breach through IE leaves your computer much more vulnerable than a breach through another browser.

Try this if you want to:
http://www.avantbrowser.com/

much more similar to IE-without the clunkiness-it's based on IE, but speedier and has tabbed browsing

35. Thanks Miss Kitty...
I went to the Avant site and read and added the link to look at later.

From what I just read on the AP wire, IE is going to get better with it's security downloads. To stay competitive, it must. Meanwhile, I do have a firewall, anti-virus, and spyware program, along with a pop-up blocker. That's more than enough for a home PC. Also, with cable modem speed, I really don't see that much of a difference in browsers. However, I promise to try Avant.

Tell me, what do you consider clunky about IE? This from a former confirmed Netscape user, who switched to IE because programmers weren't developing websites for NS compatibility.

37. you know it's been so long, I can't remember
I think the load time was painfully long, and that did not improve with my getting broadband.
My browser page was jacked, I was keylogged and reloaded my system 3 or 4 times in a year using it. not to mention a couple of repair installs.
Many hours of my life spent on hold and on the phone with Gateway, gone forever.:argh:
I use it now only to get the updates MS will allow me to have-since I refuse to download SP2, most updates are off-limits to me and my fully paid-for legal version of MS XP Pro :grr: Thanks Bill.:grr:

41. I Did Download SP2...
...but didn't see any great gains with it, and deleted it. I still get the Microsoft security downloads.

As for FireFox, IE, or whatever program you use, the more you use it, and load it, the slower it becomes simply because it has more to load. I noticed a hair difference in speed between the two, but after a week of FireFox, side-by-side, I really couldn't tell the difference in load time.

While I haven't had any of your specific computer problems, I had the most unusual thing happen last week that caused a day of reformatting and reloading programs, all to find out it wasn't the computer, but the freaking router! Talk about lost time? Sheesh. Where was the Roto-Router man when I need him?

Try Incredimail, you'll like it.

33. The only problem I have is it's not loading Java based applets for me
which means I can't go onto YAHOO games to play Pinochle or Solataire like I used to. It's kind of a pain because I have to load IE, which tends to slow my computer down bigtime.

My husband downloaded something to make it work but it didn't work whatsoever. Yet on HIS computer the Java works just fine on Firefox..and he's a computer geek!

39. Incredimail - You've Got To Try It.
Since I'm unable to begin my own threads, I'll use this thread for a side comment on Incredimail. It's a terrific e-mail program that is easily downloaded, and imports all your settings and email addresses. It's also free. Sure, there is an upgradeable program for $20 if you like skins, and various themes, but the basic program is loaded for enjoyment in emailing. There are also many free outside programs that have developed backgrounds, etc for Incredimail.

Incredimail came about from the 1st Tom Cruise movie of Mission/Impossible. Recall how he sent an email? Well, that was Hollywood. Incredimail made it a reality and has taken it many steps further.

Rather than me explaining all of the cool functions, go to http://www.incredimail.com and take the tour. BTW, using Incredimail or going back to OE (or whatever), is a simple click in the dialog box, "do you want to make this your default email program, yes or no."

Go to Tools --> Run Junk Mail Controls on Folder.

Then giggle as spam goes bye-bye.

It will take a few days, but if you regularly mark anything that is junk junk eventualy you will only get one or two spams a day TOPS.
