I wanted to thank DU today
I am a very shy person and in the past rather than voice an opinion I would hold it in and then at an inopportune time blow. At DU I have learned (I am still in the process) to form my opinion in words, state them as they come and not wait until things get to be too much and then get ugly. There were a time or two were I failed, but people here called me on it, but yet didn't alienate me. I learned from that.

Tonight as I was loading a few groceries in my car the lady next to me came over and offered me some Christian bible verses. I hesitated and said no thank you. She said they're are not from my church but will let you know if you are going to heaven. Because of DU I simply stated, not arrogantly or angrily, that I felt confident I was going to go to heaven. She asked if I wanted them anyway and I looked at her and said that I didn't trust Christians, they are intolerant and mean, look at the homosexual issues. One doesn't hate or kill in God's name. She said, "what if they sin" and before she finished I said you don't hate and kill in God's name. Her eyes were wide and I was shaking and angry but my voice was still calm.

She asked if she could close my door and I asked pardon? She said your door, I thought you were done loading your groceries. I got out of my car, closed the door and said, "I'm sorry. You have upset me". She said she was sorry and went back to her car.

Nothing was said angrily or loudly. She was a very nice lady but was extremely surprised.

Was I out of line? I used all the skills DU taught me, did I succeed? What would you have rather I done differently? I'm glad I didn't just take the versus and left, but maybe I should have?

1. It sounds like you handled yourself very well
And gave this christian something serious to consider about their own religion.

Why are you up so early? :) Me? I can't sleep. :(

2. Thank you
I can't sleep tonight either. Is this unusual for you to not be able to sleep?

5. Not too unusual, lately.
I've been staying up too late, and it's messing up my sleep. Bad habits from the long christmas holiday.

3. You Were Fine,...
...in fact, more than fine.

As a Roman Catholic, I love to take the opportunity to let fundies know EXACTLY what you said to this lady. In addition to your statements, I also let them know that people like my wife and I are VERY SICK AND TIRED of them hijacking Jesus to preach their message.

BTW, Jesus also did not force his teachings on those who did not want to hear them.

4. You were not out of line at all.
That was a lot better than I would have done.

6. shy people often get trampled on by our macho culture
Shy people are often very insightful because they actually think, rather than loudmouths like me who shoot from the hip.

7. Please be careful of "Christian" carjackers.
I would never talk to anyone in the parking lot in this city.

9. I'm shy too, and
often can't think of what I really want to say until hours later. I hope I learn (from the DU) to express myself as well as you have ... I think you have done very well.

You have givem me an idea: to create my own "tract" (sp?)so that when there is a "tract interuptous" ordeal about whether I am going to go to hell or am a sinner, I can hand them one of mine own. What do you think?
LOL :-)

16. I think that DU is the place to figure that out
it is hard to be a shy person yet to feel strongly about things. At least for me. No one was more surprised than me when I heard myself say that I was confident I was going to heaven! And yes, I have decided with the help of the people here a few comments that I hold true and can fall back on in a situation where otherwise I might sputter, or get angry. I'm glad I'm not alone, thank you for your comments.

14. Yours is the only method to use
they have stepped into my Righteous Indignation Zone.

It would not have been rude to stand up to those supporting Hitler under religious pretense; therefor it is not rude to stand up to people supporting modern-day Fascists under religious pretense.

The more we confront them, the less sure they are of their position. Divide and conquer, my friend.

Standing up for the Iraqi children is our duty as human beings.

hey, koopie: :yourock:

15. You did great
I too have learned how to handle fundies on DU and it sure makes you feel warm inside when you walk away. I recently told one almost the same as you did and let them know repuks don't have the market cornered on entering heaven. Thanks for sharing, you sure gave her something to think about

17. You did good, but you shouldn't let those people upset you
And don't generalize against Christians like that. We're not all homophobes!
