Well, I guess I shall finally talk about it
My new boss is a fucking crazy bastard. This guy is all over the place one minute it's do this the next..it's do that. And he is very abusive towards his employees. I havenot dealt with such abuse as an adult before...At first I was blaming myself, but then I realized, "hey this is straight commision, I gave up $20 an hour to work here, I don't need to take this shit."

I honestly don't know if I'll be good at sales or not, but I'm trying...hard, and having some (as in a little) succes. But he came into my office today and started on one of his rants. I had it, I had two bucks to spend on lunch today because I took this job. I said fuck it...and quit...but he ignored my quitting! So I still work there.

This guy is fucked, I mean it...he still treats the longtime employees this way.

I know I am in the rite when my "Pay your dues" type dad agrees with me about what a fuck he is...But I've not failed at much in life...I don't want this to be the first...

Questions? What do you think?

1. I think - follow your heart
ask yourself, What do I want?

Whatever decision you make, we'll support you in it. And that's the truth. :-)

3. Yeah but this is the thing
My heart and wallet are fighting..I have $14,000 in students loand to pay. Then I'm free. I haven't the money to go anywhere, or start a new job. I'm fucked. In a sense. I mean, if I was better at sales I'd love this job, but man, I know I could be awsome , but part of the problem is the stress I'm dealing with.

7. Yep, stress. A number-one killer...
...and more to come if you don't get away NOW! You'll find another job! And (supposedly) there are "honest" sales jobs.

18. Make yourself a list
on one side of page, list all the pros of staying (e.g., it's a job, it pays, get student loan paid off in 2 years, whatever, etc.) and all the cons (psychotic boss, sales is evil, not what you want to do for rest of life, etc.).

Sounds maybe silly, but actually WRITING them will force you to really think about where you are and what you are doing. maybe you'll realize that sticking it out for a year to get the loans paid off is worth it; or the fear of trying to find another job in this climate isn't wortht he risk; or maybe you'll realize the cons are so overweighing any pros that you'd rather sell a kidney. Who knows?

And though I am loathe to offer advice on such important matters, I should imagine that, since you've already quit, you have, in a sense, liberated yourself from the oppression of the situation - even though you are there, your situation has some freedom. You've already declared it as temporary, and there is freedom in that. At least, for me there would be - jobs that I didn't care about, I found comfortable, because I didn't care if I got fired; so I was more of a risk taker, I experimented more, and dammit, never got fired but ended up being well respected and doing well.

I'll also offer this - it's always easier to find a job while you are employed, than to wait until you aren't. Had a great professor in college who sad, over and over and over, keep your resume current, and keep interviewing, because it'll keep you in practice for interviewing, and you never know when your company will fire you, lay you off, or go bankrupt, or when you might find a job that pays twice or three times as much, etc.

But it's a decision only you can make.

19. True...it's funny though
QUiting...I WAS thinking about it through his fucking rant...then it just POPPED out..."THis isn't working, I can't see myself doing this." Bang like that...just happend. SO maybe that's why I'm so loose tongiht

27. Don't worry too much about that loan -
if you are unemployed they'll give you extensions. If you do quit or get fired, just tell the student loan people.

2. Sales is a tough business!
Especially in bad economic times. Some people absolutely love it and make tons of money though. Do you like the job (other than your boss, I mean)? If you enjoy the job, it's probably worth sticking out. If you dread picking up the phone to make your next cold call you should probably look for another career.

Good luck!

PS: deciding this career isn't right for you is not a defeat. It really is a learning experience.

5. Do NOT let the door hit your fanny...
...on the way out the door. He will NEVER change, and you'll end up one of those long-time employees saying he's always been like this and wondering why you didn't walk out when you had the urge.

NO JOB is worth being treated like that. Leaving is not failing! It's recognizing you're dealing with a truly fucked person who has control over your working life and WALKING AWAY FROM HIM!

21. What it tells me is this:
he is overly emotional - that's part of his psyche - and he considered your emotional outage of "I quit" to be nothing more than just emotion in the moment, as his tirades are.

In other words, he didn't take you seriously, which would suggest to me that he doesn't take his emotional outbursts or tirades very seriously. Which also means that you are perfectly free to be as emotive and obnoxioous as him, and might do better than the others there if you do that, since you'd then be speaking a language he understands.

I worked for a Greek/Italian who was excessively emotive and I realized that he never "meant" it when he was in an excited state - it was just his way of expressing frustration and disappointment, but it was never really personal. And I know that's true, because even now, almost three years after I stopped working with him, he keeps calling his assistant (his fifth since I left) by my name. :-)

So - when he's ranting, you have total freedom to rant back! Hell, you'll be stacking up promotions like no one else.

I learned that a few weeks ago...let him have it. It's just that it drives me nuts, putting up with it. Us over emootional types take everything seriously.

6. I don't know the specifics, but
if you were going to quit, anyway, because of this doofus, why not go above his head and talk to HIS boss. Wherever they may be? Or maybe even HIS boss. You've nothing to lose, if you were leaving, anyway. Maybe it'd help.

If you possibly can, stay with it (until you find a better place) and outmaneuver the SOB. But if you don't feel like playing such games, or if it's destroying your soul, evacuate with haste (after, of course, seeing if you can gain satisfaction further up the food chain).

11. He owns the place
And today I took a $500 draw. I have about $250 commision coming to me...even though I hate this shit, I feel I owe something for the other $250...though I've been there for 5 weeks. I needed the dough, I figure I'll give it till Friday..no changes (as in sales) I won't be back monday.

Yeah - vaya from that place as soon as you reasonably can. It's not going to get better, barring a Dickensian visit from the Ghosts of Employees past.

9. Get Out
Take a good look at those long term employees he treats that way.

how is the quality of their work? People who stick around in a shitty situation eventually learn to not care about work ethics - don't let it spread over to you.

You're not alone. Recently I had to leave a job that was not working out for me too. It was a very tough decision for me; but, for a variety of reasons that I can't mention in public, I had to leave the company I was working for.

22. I've had more than a few bad bosses
The trick is to learn how to mentally make them fade to no more than background noise. My philosophy is to smile, nod politely, keep quiet, agree with everything that's said, then when they leave the room do things the way they SHOULD be done. If the job is completed and the client is happy, the boss will quietly take the credit for it (if he/she ever realized or finds out what happened), and tomorrow will be a new day.

Keep it all at arm's length, and when the day is done, forget about it. Never EVER take it home with you. You'll end up in a tower somewhere sniping at the pedestrians. (Not that it's ever happened to me-- at least, not that I'll admit to...)

Joke 'em if they can't take a screw!

24. If you're taking a draw
you really need to realistically assess what your income potential is in the next 6 - 12 months. I worked in a sales related industry that effectively had a "ramp-up" so that if you knew what you were doing you could (at the time) make serious money w/in a year. Not sure how your plan works, but you need to find out from co-workers or the net, what you can reasonably expect to make. Then figure out if that's enough to make it. If these numbers don't jive you need an exit strategy.

26. HEyHEY, what does your gut tell you that you should do?
Listen to it carefully.

It will never let you down.

I know too well from experience.

Money, or the lack of it, isn't everything, nor should it be.

You'll make the right call.
