Lilly's at the vet--too much information!
We had to drop off the little demon at the vet this morning after a family adventure in grooming. I noticed last night that she had been doing some scooting and was going to bring her in today anyway. This morning SO noticed her doing butt dragging in the snow and thought she looked constipated. Luckily he looked and found a large delivery attached to her tail.

We immediately got her into the bathroom sink--(I'm half awake, half dressed and without coffee yet) and of course after she's all wet realized that the attachment just wasn't going to come off easily. Once again, he couldn't find a singe pair of scissors in the house while I held down a wet and upset poochie. I sacrificed my kitchen shears for the cause and we removed the offending object.

Vet said her anal glands might be full? (Never heard such a thing) Does anyone here know what that means?

1. Yes - some dogs have to have their glands expressed.
By you.
I know, yuck.
Some breeds have this problem more than others - nothing that can't be avoided with some work.

I don't know which breeds are more susceptible, just remember a friend having to do this with his dog.

2. We had the anal glands removed
in one of our dogs (rat terrier) because they kept getting infected. The vet said they are unneccessary anyway, so to avoid having the poor dog keep getting infections, the glands are gone. None of the other dogs have the problem.

3. Your vet is correct, but most groomers and vets can do it for you
You have to really trust your groomer, your dog needs to be comfortable with them, and be prepared to pay. That's what we do. Gross, I know, but necessary.

Hangers-on, so to speak, can be reduced by trimming the dog's sanitary hair.

4. Yes, nasty, smelly really yucky job
that usually should be done yearly at their physical. Happens mostly with dogs who are fed mainly canned food, but can happen to all dogs.
