Am I the only person that likes "Open Water"?
I'm watching it for the first time now, and loving it (read that as "it's freaking me right the fuck out.").

Several people told me it sucked, but I'm loving it . . . or maybe those people have just never been in a situation where this was an actual possibility (being stranded in the middle of the ocean). I have been, and :scared:

14. I disagree :)
It's not a Hollywood ending, but then again, it's not a Hollywood movie.

39. 9 times out of 10 I prefer none Hollywood endings.
But this movie was supposed to be based on a true story. And that means that everything that happened after they left the boat was completely made up, since it becomes obvious at the end that nobody was around to tell what happened.

That was the exact same beef I had with The Perfect Storm, which had basically the same ending and, btw, was a major hollywood film.

out of ever wanting to see it at all! So good job with the scary plot, but not so good at the marketing of it.

I think I will give Deep Water a miss.

4. My sister bought it and told me how much it rocked.
She doesn't praise that kind of film often (she's really into tragic love stories and chicky films) but she liked this one.

20. Indie film making at it's most basic.
Free of high-dollar special effects, free of outside commercial influence, and free of traditional frameworks of what is "acceptable."

Very well done.

38. I was mainly just being snotty, buuuuuut....
since you ask... It seemed obvious because parts of the film were really good, but others were just mediocre at best... maybe he was trying to play too many roles. But who am I to judge? Apparently it appealed to some.

8. That is the second worst movie I've ever seen.
The first being a tie between Mars Attacks and Galaxy Quest.

When I saw Open Water in the theater people were laughing at it because it was so boring and pathetic by the end. The sharks go away... now they come back... now they go away... then they come back again. Oooooohhhh, scary.

All my friends who saw it with me were really disappointed and we left musing about how we could get our money back.

13. Maybe not...
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 07:56 PM by rockymountaindem
but I went to the movies to be entertained, not to watch a nature documentary being non-narrated by a couple of bad actors. Besides, those shark week shows are 1 hour with commercials. Open Water was, what, 2.5 hours long? Sheesh.

On edit: Your appreciation of this movie can only lead me to conclude that your taste in films sucks, you are a horrible person with only a 6th grade education and are in reality, a freeper sent here to get liberals to waste time on a movie that they shouldn't watch.

:silly:

16. Mmmmmhmmmm
First, you might want to get your watch fixed, as the movie is approximately 80 minutes run time.

Second, you might want to refrain from attacking people based on your own ignorance.

You really should tone down the insults and attacks, they only make you look foolish.

17. some of us don't need
big, expensive thematic effects to entertain.

the realism in this film is its greatness.

not to mention the dialogue between the couple throughout... just standout...

37. Oh, I read your username as "Milo"
but upon checking your profile I realize that's not what it is. Sorry.

My friend said you need to be a Trekkie to really like Galaxy Quest, and I've always been more of a Star Wars fan, to the extent that I'm a fan of that sort of thing. In response to the above claims about what I thought could have made Open Water better... yeah, aliens would have been cool. But then when I was watching Open Water the idea of Darth Vader walking down the aisle and doing me in with a light saber, or even that "force grip" thing looked appealing.

The setup plods along, but by the time they're in the water the pacing feels about right. I thought it was very entertaining and very well constructed for suspense.

The more feeble-minded DUers don't get car chases, which confuses them. But the movie made me think about it long after, which is the hallmark of a good film.
