Quote from Mel Gibson about Michael Moore!
"I feel a strange kinship with Michael," Mr. Gibson said. "They're trying to pit us against each other in the press, but it's a hologram. They really have got nothing to do with one another. It's just some kind of device, some left-right. He makes some salient points. There was some very expert, elliptical editing going on. However, what the hell are we doing in Iraq? No one can explain to me in a reasonable manner that I can accept why we're there, why we went there, and why we're still there."

Remember - he's a CATHOLIC fundie.
He knows what PROTESTANT fundies like the ones in power in the USA think of Catholics. Maybe he took time to read some Chick tracts.

10. The media likes to break things down into simple oppositions.
Edited on Tue Jan-11-05 02:56 PM by LoZoccolo
It's just like the religious right - 39% of evangelical Christians are Democrats, but it's a much simpler story to draw party affiliation down the lines that they do because it fits in with the story of the rise of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.

I used to work in TV news, and realized this kind of thing while I was there. If you took a look at the written script that the anchors read, it really drives home how small it is and how simplified the story becomes as a result, especially when you add in the fact that sometimes they cut to quotes from people, and usually they have one from one side and one from the other and that's it.

Now what sucks is when we fall for that and get on the "side" the media's drawn out for us.

14. And this should teach us something.
They use the strategy because it works for them. They wouldn't use it if it wasn't good for their side, which makes me wonder why we play their game for them by falling along the lines they draw.

16. Exactly.
The problem is not our stance on issues, but how the issues are framed and how we send our message.

We need to use simpler rhetoric. Three-word catch phrases and comparisons the lower-than-average person can understand. We're not going to win with nuanced positions.

17. You're right about the rhetoric--the media is programmed only to grasp
onto simple phrases. Any nuance or effort at explanation is lost on them. We have to play this game better. My initial reaction is disgust at the media for its inability to grasp difficult and gray issues. But let's face it--they ain't never gonna change, so we might as well get better and actually start winning!

The simple truth is that a Christian can be against the war.

Many churches and church-goers sees the war as UnChristian and against Christ's Golden Rule.

They could attend and appreciate both movies.

19. Not surprising
Many Catholics (even the RWing ones) disagree with the war in Iraq because they felt it unecessary and listened to the Pope's very vocal disagreements with it. Novak, as big a douche as he is, was against the war for those reasons. As was Buchanan, though I suspect his oposition comes mainly from his isolationist tendencies.

23. Plenty of non-Catholic right-wingers don't like the war either
over Christmas break I had a heated discussion with my father over the dinner table about media bias. My dad is the second most conservative man I've known personally, and my brother (who egged us both on) is also pretty conservative. But five minutes after dinner the three of us were out in the garage, and my brother was arguing passionately against the war, while my father agreed.

I have a very thoughtful and treasured uncle who I found out over break is apparently a republican (he had a letter of personal congratulations from gw, so I figure he's a donor), but when we visited his house, he argued very thoughtfully against the war ... his arguments sounded almost as radical as mine sometimes feel. I couldn't figure out why these three people who have espoused admiration for gw and repubs in general would be so dead-on about the war. It was a huge :wtf: moment.
