Khephra's Funeral Arrangements
Scott Anthony Lowery, 37, Indianapolis, Indiana died Saturday, Janurary 8, 2005. He is survived by his mother Nancy, uncles, Michael and Tad, aunts, Mary and Mona, cousins, Elizabeth, Amanda, and Sarah. He graduated from North Central High School, Indianapolis and attended I.U.P.U.I. While at I.U. he was senior editor for the writer's magazine, Genusis, Spring of 2000.

He was a well-loved and respected contributor to The Democraticunder-
ground, a web site, posting late breaking news for them. He belonged to Americans United. He was an advocate for Howard Dean and was passionate about politics. The Broadripple Masonic Lodge will do a memorial for him on Saturday, January 15, 2005 at 3p.m. Hopefully his friends that can make it will say something about their friend. Calling will be from 1-3p.m at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Home, 325 Carmel Drive, Carmel, Indiana.

At this time, we still don't know the cause of death. We may know the preliminary cause in a few days, but the final determination may take weeks, if not months.

The one thing I told hippiechick is that Scott always said he wanted to be rich enough some day to have a hugh pyramid (sp)and his body placed in it. Well, he never got rich. But I was thinking if any of you are good at woodworking you could make a small one with the
symbol that he loved on it to place his ashes. That would surely give him a laugh. As he told all of you, he loved Egyptology! I would love seeing him surrounded by something he love,...as he lived.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I have sat at his computer for the three nights reading each and every one of your posts. I hope he knows how he was loved and respected. That would mean more to him than I could tell you.

Thanks.

BTW, Mike Malloy just played a song and gave a tribute to Scott on the Air America radio network...the show will be archived so a DU'er can make a copy of it for you in a couple days so you can hear it.

Hugs...hang in there

BTW...not to drag this thread down with details and it's not much, but I do want to make sure you know social security pays a $150.00 burial benefit.

77. My brother-in-law just passed away from AIDS . . .
and he did not get anything from SS because he did not have a living spouse. I believe it would have been $250.00 if his wife, Barbara, were still alive, but she died four years ago from AIDS. Plus, my mother and law had to send back almost all of his SSI check for the month because he died near the first of the month. Aren't our Government Bureaucracy's great? I'll just leave that there.

I'm sorry to bring this up; however, thought it should be corrected.

Also, my uncle owns the funeral home, and he told my mother-in-law that since my brother in law was getting SSI, that Social Services would give her like $700. He gave her the paperwork to take to Social Services and it was like a month and she received a check to pay toward the burial.

I hope this small amount of information can help his family during their hard times.

8. A song for Khephra, Ramses The Second Is Dead
Ramses the Second is dead, my love
He's left from Memphis for heaven
Ptah has taken him in the Solar Barge
And walked him to Nut's celestial shores

Ramses the Second is dead, my love
He's wandering the plains where the blessed live
Ptah and Ra and Sokaris too
Are taking him on th' Celestial Boat

Ramses the Second, Ramses the Second
With the Savior
He walked to his bier
Where his pylons did wave
With the flags of his victories

Ramses the Second is dead
He died and he lies in the boat
He's floating down those cool grey waters
To his tomb by the Nile's surging shore

Standing in the harsh harsh grey granite
Standing my Ramses forever!
With a coffin of gold and the pretty pale carvings
Lifting you to heaven

Heaven was waiting for Ramses II
He's gone to great Ptah's huge side.

I am so very sorry that I have to miss Scott's memorial. I will be there in spirit though I will be more than 1,000 miles away.

We met briefly at a DU gathering at BroadRipple Park. You dropped by towards the end of the event. Scott kept the party going that afternoon - what a great conversationalist. I have met few people with as broad a scope of interests and knowledge as he.

Thank you for keeping us updated and welcoming us so warmly in the memorial for Scott.

Condolences and Peace,

salin

...but I will be there in spirit. Like many others in this community, I was initially drawn here by Khephra's unstinting devotion to keeping the Latest Breaking News forum one of the best news summary sites on the internet. You've read the posts in reaction to his passing so you know what your son meant to us all. My heart goes out to you and the rest of his family.

20. Kef was a kind and gentle soul,he seemed so wise and gracious for such
a young man. You should be proud to know that he made such an impact on so many people in a positive way. He convinced me to go to an antiwar march and inspired me so much that I now regularly contribute to the letter to the editor and let it out in the Indianpolis star and write my congressman and the media probably way too often.

He really tried to make a difference and to show the truth about this administration to any who would listen.

Cyber hugs to you, I know that Scott is in a better world with no wars and no suffering, emotionally or physically any longer.

One of the ways we are judged is by the lives we have touched. Scott touched countless lives, not just at DU, but throughout the progressive movement. We mourn his passing. He was a giant, in many ways. On the other hand, he was "just" another American patriot who cared deeply about this country, his country, and who inspires so many of us to do as he did, to work tirelessly to bring about real change in this country that we all love.

Our hearts go out to you in this time of indescribable loss.

If I can just be smarter...

more helpful to others...

more courageous...

kinder and more patient with EVERYBODY...

more humorous and entertaining...

maybe that would be a small start.

Take care, Momma K. We loved your son very much. I myself never met him, never exchanged a spoken word with him, but he touched my life for a few brief moments in very profound ways. I will never forget him.

42. Momma Kef.
Once again you and your family have my deepest and most heartfelt and profound sympathies, condolences, prayers and thoughts. I have been thinking a lot about Kef over the past two days. Although I never met him in person, there was a time when I was engaged in e-mail exchanges with him and his kindness, generosity and compassion always shone through. He touched the hearts and lives of so many people from so many backgrounds and in quite a significant number of countries throughout the globe through his involvement on DU and his legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of the people he touched. I consider myself blessed and fortunate to have the privilege of having known Scott and I know that, if there were more like him, the world would be a much better place for it.

I will be there in spirit. And I will keep him (and all of you) in my prayers and thoughts

46. Mother Nancy, How kind and thoughtful you are to take the time
to think of us here and ensure that thousands of us are informed when you surely must be dealing with grief on a scale I can't personally begin to fathom. Guess there's no question who influenced Scott's warm character the most. Khephra was a kind, thoughtful and giving man and Mother Nancy, there are no words to express how deeply we miss him  My own eyes have rarely experienced a dry moment since I learned of the tragic news.

I wish I could pop myself through the screen to you to give you the longest, loving (((((((HUG))))))) Not only to help console your sadness but to personally express my gratitude for the gift of you. It is after all you Mother Nancy, that we owe the greatest thanks of all for gifting us here at DU and the world with the honor and the privilege to have known a very special man, Scott Anthony Lowery
aka Khephra:loveya: He was and always will be, our friend.
:toast: A toast to honor the life of Scott Anthony Lowery :toast:
:toast: To Khephra gone but never forgotten.

Also Mother Nancy,
I stand in awe of your grace and strength during this time:hug:
You are as precious a gift to us, as was your Son. Think not twice, for I have no doubt you have earned every right to claim, and every reason in the world to be the Proudest of Mom's :loveya:

They're normally used to place under the Quran. If you like, I can send you one of the bigger rugs to place under the urn. It's not much but it would be a touch of Egypt.

My husband brought them back from Egypt in 2002.

Just let me know me and I'll ship one out immediately.

53. Mama Kef
you had a wonderful son, even though I never met him I knew how special he was. Kef always made me feel safe and secure no matter how bad things were. When I saw his name on the posts in the Late Breaking News I felt things weren't so bad because Kef was busy watching over all that was going on in the World. I will never forget him.

My very, very deepest love and sympathy to you.

Kef was my first friend here at DU, in fact, he is a large part of why I became a participating memeber. I am not the only one to say this, there are many, many more of us here who have the same story.

I will miss him every day of my life. I looked for his posts every day.

I just want you to know that I am thinking of you. Sending love your way. Please know that there are many of us here with you in spirit, although we are scattered all around this country and even the world.

It would be an honor to donate the wood for a pyramid. I have some beautiful "quilted" figured furniture grade maple that can be sent to any woodworker.

If it is something you might like, please don't hesitate to "PM" me with contact info of a woodworker.

When I logged on to DU on Monday, I shocked and saddened to see that Scott had passed.

I found DU in March, 2001. Don't post much anymore but read it daily, especially Latest Breaking News.

When I first started lurking on DU, Scott was the first poster to catch my attention. Over the past two years, I have become so busy at work and with helping my disabled husband that I could have never stayed on top of issues dear to my heart without DU, LBN, and Scott. His dedication to LBN has made it possible for me to keep up with what is really happening in this world.

You raised an extraordinary young man who touched countless lives. Even though I never met Scott in person, I mourn the loss of Khephra who I had come to consider a soul-mate.

Khephra - may peace be with you.

He was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed.

I want to comment on something you said.

"The one thing I told hippiechick is that Scott always said he wanted to be rich enough some day to have a hugh pyramid (sp)and his body placed in it. Well, he never got rich."

Judging from the outpouring of grief his friends have display over his passing, I'd say Scott Lowrey was the richest man in town. Rich where it matters - in love from family and friends.

May you <in time> find peace and comfort in your memories of Scott.

I am relatively new here at DU, and sadly, never had the honor and pleasure to meet Scott. But it is obvious from all the posts by those who knew him better than I did, that he was a kind and gentle soul who was wise beyond his years.
Your son was loved by thousands, and will be sorely missed here at DU. I am sorry that I will not be able to be at the ceremony celebrating his life, but I will be there in spirit.
Scott was an exceptional man. Your loss is beyond words, as is ours.

Death is nothing at all

What is dying?

I am standing on the seashore.
A ship sails and spreads her white sails to the
morning breeze and starts for the ocean.
She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her
'til at last, she fades on the horizon.
And someone at my side says, "She is gone."
Gone where?

Gone from my sight, that is all.
She is just as large in the masts, hull and spars
as she was when I saw her
And just as able to bear her load of living freight to
its destination.

The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me,
not her;
and just at the moment when someone at my side says,
"She is gone,"
There are others who are watching her coming
and other voices take up a glad shout
"There she comes!"

and that is DYING.

DEATH is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away to the next room.
I am me and you are you, whatever we were to each
other we are that still.

Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the easy way, which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.
Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we
enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, and pray for me.
Let my name be ever a household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without effort, without the ghost of a shadow in it.
Life means more than it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolute unbroken continuity...

Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval somewhere,
very near, just around the corner.

All is well.
Henry Scott Holland 1847-1918

81. My deepest condolences
I've been away from DU the last couple of days and I had no idea he died. I'm sitting here stunned. Kef was one of my best DU buddies, we used to chat all the time about sci-fi, anime, etc. I even gave him info on an anime con in Baltimore after he asked and I was hoping I'd get to meet him and hang out.

Kef was just such a great guy. He was always the first to post what was going on whether it was important things like what BushCo. was up to or silly stuff like who was going to be in the next big comic book movie. No matter what the subject I always learned something from his posts and it was very much a pleasure to chat with him. Kef really made DU a better place, and he will be sorely missed.

My heart goes out to you and the rest of the family, you will all be in my prayers.

84. How sad it is that it seems the good; they die young!
I can't help but think of the John Dunne poem "No man is an sland" when considering this sad loss. We may sometimes feel as though we are not "talking" with real people when reading and posting however this well written testimony is evidence of a real community which celebrates, repudiates , motivates, loves, laughs, and unfortunately even mourns.

Rest In Peace Kephra

87. Khephra was the Sphinx of DU
Khephra's Egyptian inspiration was associated with death and rebirth -- a khephir is a dung beetle, revered by the ancient Egyptians for transforming the products of decay into the nourishment of the Earth and new life.

He chose his pen-name well, given the circumstances of America's most recent political era.

I haven't been around here much lately. Hearing he died is a shock for me. I'm very sorry, and I wish you the comfort of his memory to sustain you through this loss.

I'm tremendously sorry to hear about Scott. I read the obituary and I noticed your name with great interest since it happens to be the same as my grandmother's name Nancy Mullins. When I saw that name I couldn't help but wonder if Keph and I had more in common than political views. My family comes from east tennessee.

90. A couple questions about the 15th
From the message it looks like there's two events in two different locations: the visiting at the funeral home and the memorial service at the masonic lodge. My guess is that the funeral home event is more for Scott's family and close friends and the memorial service is more for the community in general? Or are most of the DUers who are going down there for this going to both events?

I am thinking about driving down, but I didn't really know Scott that well and his family doesn't know me at all, and I don't want to crash something that's mainly for the family.

Thanks,

The Plaid Adder

96. Carmel Time Zone
Carmel is a suburb of Indianapolis—about 15 miles straight north of downtown. This time of year, it's the same time zone as the East Coast, and yes, it's the same as South Bend. Indiana is apparently too stooopid to know how to change our clocks twice a year, so the time zones change around us in the spring and fall.
