Any insulin-dependent diabetics out there? (NOT medical advice, Mods!)
I just came through a nasty bout of hypoglycemia and I feel like bawling my eyes out.

My kid's been wanting to ride his bike since school let out, and I had to keep him in "just in case."

I dunno why I posted, just wanted to feel less alone, I guess.

I feel so guilty for my poor son. I will be sure to tell his karate instructor, though--it was tough, but he took good care oof me!

1. My husband is a type 1
I had to go on insulin shots during my last pregnancy. It's absolutely no fun when your blood sugars go all out of whack. I know it is hard for the kids to understand, but you've got to take the time you need to be healthy. In the long run, they're going to want you around as long as possible.

BTW, have you ever considered a pump? Hubby got one a couple months ago and it has really helped him regulate his sugars.

2. That's the thing; I've had one for 3 years.

I think I'm going through "hormonal" episodes. I test 4-6 times a day.

This one was pretty close to the edge though--a place I haven't been for a VERY long time.

I've taken insulin for (yeegads) THIRTY-EIGHT years; you'd think I'd be a pro by now!

Edit: I LOVE my pump. I can't wait until I can get the new model!

3. Maybe it's time to visit with the internist?
I'd probably go and see if there was something they need to adjust. I know during pregnancy the added hormones would build up insulin resistance. During the last couple of weeks, I was taking obscene amounts just to keep myself in check.

38 years? My goodness... you deserve a medal!

8. As I mentioned to NSMA, my hubby nailed it; and hormones are it.
That time again.

You want medal? Read about NSMA's mom--that woman has courage I doubt I'd have anymore!

4. I am a Type 1
and have been since 1967. I was 16 yrs. old. I understand what you are talking about. I always downplayed my reactions with my own son so he wouldn't be scared or worried. He is now 22. Maybe I did him a disservice by hiding the worst parts. I don't know. I think you did the right thing.

5. I am one, as well
For.... wow, 15 years now. 3 of those years spent on the pump, including while pregnant (the best A1C I ever had, LOL). I only had one episode where my husband couldn't wake me up, but I've had plenty of 'need to lay down and feeling sweaty and like passing out'-type episodes. It definitely sucks, and I feel your pain. I'm glad you're doing ok, and I'm sure your son will understand, especially as he gets older!

6. You have my sympathies...my mother is insulin dependent and
when she gets those bouts they are rough...that and sometimes in the morning...her sugar going out of whack actually causes her to dry heave even though her diabetes is under good control.

She is almost 80 and does her own shots now but when she first went on the insulin she couldn't bring herself to do it so I would.

Do keep things like berries (strawberries or blueberries) around or even grapes.... a few of them when you have a bad bout can help.

I also keep armenian cucumbers around ( they have smaller seeds, tender skin you can eat and are a bit less gassy than regular cukes) and use them to make little salads or I simply marinate them in a bit of sea salt and leave them in the fridge for her....cucumbers are a food that interacts well with hyper or hypo insulinism

7. My compliments to your mom! Wow, I don't think I could do the injex anymor
I always have the "stuff" on hand, and snack a bit thru the day. In this case my hubby (whom I just called about it) nailed it--period time again.

Same thing last month, just not quite as awful. Gonna call the endo tomorrow.

Cucumbers? No problem, I love them. I'll keep that in mind!

9. Yeah my hormones are going nuts and my migraines are cropping up
more frequently. I find keeping a food diary on my calendar when I get those bouts does make a bit of a difference...I do better with protiens and salads and staying away from starch and sugar about a week before I start

10. I am type 1. I had a viral infection 3 months ago and went into what
used to be called a diabetic coma. I was in the intensive care unit for 4 days and was really afraid to go home. Don't feel bad, it is a very frightening thing. One positive thing that came from my experience is that when I had low blood sugars I would freak out and eat anything in sight. Now, I realize your body will produce its own sugar.

With my virus I was so sick at my stomach that like an idiot I didn't monitor my sugar, assuming since I wasn't eating that it would be low and I can always tell when I am low(the shakes, sweaty, somewhat incoherent.) However, the body acts miraculously and produces the sugar. Unfortunately, I produce no insulin to keep it in line, hence by the 3rd day I was admitted into emergency with a 980 blood sugar level and 40/22 blood pressure.

Diabetes sucks..I continue hoping for the day when a cure is found.

11. I know someone who is absolutely THRIVING after a pancreas
transplant.

I thought about it, but it's still pretty risky. She had hers over 10 years ago (she's our precinct chair!) and she kicks ass.

I have faith a cure will be found. I've been told my whole life, "In another ten years..."!

It'll happen...

12. My father was an insulin dependent juvenile diabetic from age 13 in 1934
till his death in 1992 at age 71. He managed the disease successfully for 58 years with no major complications until he died of a heart attack.

A tribute to moderate living- his disease actually had a very positive effect on our family life as we never ate junk food and had regular mealtimes. The disease has not been passed on thus far.
