God I love Lucinda Williams.
What's your favorite Lucinda Williams album? Song?

I love EVERYTHING on the Car Wheels CD.

"Once I get to Baton Rouge, I won't cry a tear for you. All the way to Jackson, I don't think I'll miss you much."

And then "You Took my Joy."

I love this woman!

1. Sweet Old World
is the song which made me love her music.

Car Wheels is a great disc. Big Red Sun is another favorite song, but I'm blanking on which disc has that.

5. I met her publicist last South by Southwest.
He was really a nice fellow. LOVES Lucinda despite her...quirks.

I have to confess a soft spot for her, although I'm a bigger Patty Griffin fan. :D

6. The deepest rung of Hell is reserved for --
-- people who don't like Lucinda Williams.

She's absolutely top-drawer.

On many days I find myself playing over and over in my head lines like "It's only concrete and barbed wire."

What a talent.

I have Emmylou Harris to thank for mentioning her, on stage in Sarasota, Florida, some years back. Evidently the two were neighbors in Nashville for a time, and are still great pals.

10. Well then,
I am in truly deep shit. I just don't personally have much use for pungent and world weary observations over sparse country/rock-inflected folk. That stuff bores the ever-loving hell out of me--we'll see if it's gonna be enough to offset my assigned fate tho'.

Personally I like busy, pretentious instrumental music where the musicians just totally show-off! :) About one third of the vocal music I own is in languages I don't speak, that way the singing is effectively just another instrument.

In closing, I ordinarily wouldn't intrude on somebody else's love fest, but the "lowest rung of hell" thing was just TOO good to let pass without comment! ;)

16. Upon further review
I should clarify and say that one-third of what I currently have in my car--not what I own. Ooops my bad. I reccomend NorthSide music's sampler "Cheaper Than Food" series it's mainly folk-rock crossover from Scandinavia. The discs are bone cheap (Like six bucks or so) have about twenty tracks each and usually have a pretty wide variety on them. And mercy me! Those Finnish ladies can SING! The Swedes too as long as we're at it. I saw a few of the bands at a local festival and was pretty impressed.

I must confess when I've picked up complete CD's from the artises on the samplers....well, the results have been sorta mixed. Annbjorg Lien-awesome, Vartina...unnnhhh.

Plus people REALLY look at you funny if they overhear it (I don't generally crank my car stereo.

Ahh yes, emjoy that music folks! :)

20. Varttina...
... you just might avoid that trip to hell, after all. And If not, some of us Lucinda fans could take up a collection and send you some ice water.

Varttina rocks! "Seleniko" is favorite disk to "crank up" while driving down an empty highway late at night.

21. Whew...now I can sleep tonight!
Seriously back to Lucinda though, while that real down tempo stuff isn't totally my bag, whenever I hear "Car tires on a gravel road" (which song does she mention St. Charles?) I think back to the couple of years I spent living in Lafayette Louisiana and the time my work sent me through St. Charles--a couple of times on a Greyhound Bus! If that isn't living the vibe of Lucinda I wanna hear what is!

Where would American folk be without trips on the "dog?"

(I promise you all that these last couple of posts were a minor scenic detour and NOT hijacking this thread :) )

27. I enjoy much of her work, but your first paragraph accurately describes...
her work when she is just coasting (on a gravel road or elsewhere)
That was succinct and well done :)

11. Sharp Cutting Wings (Song to a Poet)
You're the one you're my shinin star
You're the one I've been waiting for
Let's fly away to some foreign country
Where nobody knows who we are

I wish I had a ship to sail the waters
I wish I had about a hundred dollars
But I'll just stand with this glass in my hand
Feeling like nothing even matters

Your words run thru me like the blood in my veins
I could swear I knew your love before I knew your name
Before I knew your name

Everyday I miss your smiling face
No one here can ever take your place
The sun can shine down over my town
But it never shines in my days

I told all the stars above
I'm gonna shower you with my love
I won't demand you I'll try to understand you
My love is free as a dove

Your words run thru me like the blood in my veins
I could swear I knew your love before I knew your name
Before I knew your name

You're the one you're my shinin star
You're the one I've been waiting for
Let's fly away to some foreign country
Where nobody knows who we are

17. I've got "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road"
Her Dad is an English professor (or was) at the University of Arkansas, and read a poem of his at Clinton's second inaugural.

"Right In Time" is a great opener on "Car Wheels...", but I like 'em all.

24. Lou's a bit of a case. Love her nonetheless, especially
with homeboy Bo Ramsey on guitar, as he was on the last tour.

If I had my way, she's to snap out of it and start to rock again. Enough with this fey-feelie stuff.

28. She was seriously pimping Chuck Prophet
who opened for her at the last show of hers that I saw.

He was great live; anybody have opinions on his albums? I haven't been able to find much stuff of his to steal, and I pretty much like to know what I'm getting when I buy music.
