Forget the maxim that you are what you eat - the real key to your personality is the car that you drive. A person's choice of car can reveal what newspaper they read, the television programmes they watch and their state of physical health, according to new consumer research.

Far from being motivated solely by cost or horsepower, car buyers are driven by the desire for a set of wheels that reflects their lifestyles. More than 5,000 motorists were questioned by data analysts Wegener DM for the research company Consumer Insight. They were asked a series of health and lifestyle questions, as well as what new car they were considering buying.

The research found Peugeot owners were "thoughtful" types, who hated conformity, liked opera and were most likely to watch BBC news. Nissan drivers were "contented" types, who liked gardening, watched Countdown and looked for secure investments. Audi owners are "risk takers"; they have an energetic social life, are fans of Big Brother and are impulsive spenders.

As expected of cars that are beloved by "bling" aficionados, Premiership footballers - and their wives - Mercedes and Jaguar owners are deemed "aspirational". They care more about the look of their car than its reliability, are ambitious and don't believe in budgets.

10. A fleet of aging Toyotas

All 4 of us - Dave, me and the 2 girls - drive Toyota Corollas or Camrys. The cars range from 4 to 16 years in age. All were bought used except the 16-year-old Corolla.

We want reliable, low-priced transportation with good gas mileage. If we were wealthy, we'd be driving Priuses.

My brother worked for a Toyota dealer years ago and told us he rarely, if ever, saw Toyota Corollas in the repair shop.

I look at gigantic SUVs and think, "Assholes".

11. Disengaged? Me?

Why are Honda owners content but Toyota owners disengaged? What's the real difference between a Camry and an Accord anyway? Pretty silly distinction. According to that I'm disengaged, feel life is a struggle, read the Star, don't work hard and watch "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". If I'd gotten the Accord instead of the Camry, I'd be "Contented", I'd be community minded and love to fish. Huh?
