Right Wing class versus Free Speech-need DUers help

I have to take a class and I am basically down to two choices. One class is a “Free Speech” class.

Major issues surrounding the role of speech, press, and electronic media in society. Areas of study include the history of free speech/press issues in society, the role of the government in regulating the marketplace of ideas, and the responsibility of the individual in a free society.

The other class is an “Economics and Public Policy Class”. I have already looked at the syllabus and this class is a fringe-right economics class. The first reading is by Hayek. I am very familiar as this Chicago School of economics is what fuels Libertarian ideology and Republicans at least talk about it (though they only implement it partially).

This class uses the failures of communism to advance complete government elimination (as opposed to a moderate viewpoint).

I’ve already read one of the readings (on environment) and it blames the “Love Canal” disaster 100% on government. The class also appears to be very anti-regulation equating it with oppression.

I don’t know if I am ready for 4 months of “Liberal ideology sucks, government sucks, bow to capitalism”, but isn’t this the way to test our ideas out? Challenge?

My question is this. I am going to have to jump through some hoops to get into the Free Speech class, but can waltz right into the Econ class. Should I make the effort to avoid maybe making myself crazy, or should I crawl into the belly of the beast?

1. Sounds like you're setting up for failure in the Econ class...

...if you don't conform to the mindset your grade will suffer. I would not beat my head against that particular wall.

7. No wonder you have such horrible choices! George Mason...
is a RIGHT WING/ENRONOMICS School! Why did you ever go there?

My condolences! If I had things my way, they would have their accredidation pulled!

3. Hard to get into the Free Speech class, easy Econ?
seems the Econ class might die a natural death should attendance continue to flag. Help it die its due and go with Free speech. YOu'll have plenty of Freeper to fight in there, too.

4. You just have to decide what your priorities are
and what you can tolerate right now. I myself do not think that subjecting yourself to constant RW propaganda is the best way of testing out our ideas. It sounds to me more like self torture, especially considering everything else that's happening in this country right now.

I won't do it myself. A couple of years ago, I was registered for an English Composition class. It was right when the Iraq war was starting and the teacher turned out to be a complete right wing harpy.

I ended up withdrawing from the class because I just couldn't stand to be around it. Next semester I registered for the same class again and ended up with a teacher who turned out to be a DUer.

I think the Free Speech class sounds like a much better deal, unless you actually need the economics class for your degree. I would go to the extra effort to get into it.

Good luck with your decision.

6. Thanks
No, I don’t need the Econ class…Either of these two classes would do. They had a class on Darwin that I wanted to take, but its not taught this semester.

I am thinking it’s best I leave the Econ class alone, because I am taking some advanced science classes this semester and I don’t need the added insanity on top of that. The Free Speech class may be the better deal.

I don’t need anguish.
