Can somebody explain the big deal about "Napoleon Dynamite"?

I can't believe this thing was a hit. Obnoxious characters, a hipper-than-thou attitude, and a story that just meandered on before finally going nowhere... Yet it was popular with critics and audiences! What am I missing? Please help, because my mild dislike of this film is swiftly turning into irrational hatred.

1. I liked it...

It was bad in a unique way:-) I think there's something in our society that roots for those who are unabashedly half-assed in everything they do, like making this crappy movie. Also, I think there's something in the high school culture shown that many people can relate to. Regardless, you have to say the movie was unique.

3. See, I don't think it WAS all that unique.

It put a slightly different spin on the whole "Nerd gets revenge on the popular kids" scenario.

I don't know. I still fell like I'm missing something. And I certainly respect your opinion. :-)

2. Sleep on it...

It took me until 2 days after I watched it to realize that not only did I like it, I loved it. My s/o had a similar experience. Maybe, maybe not :shrug:

5. That movie made me fall asleep

But then again, most movies do. :P

6. It was really hard for me to make it through this one.

After about 20 minutes, I called my ex-wife, who had recommended it, and asked her, "Does this get any better? Becuase right now I'm hating it." She assured me that it did, and since our opinions on movies were one of the few things we agreed on, I stuck it out.

I really didn't feel like it got much better.

8. i've seen it three times..

the great characters and unpretentious dialogue made it enjoyable. The more I watch it, the more I like it. Gosh!!

I think the movie makes fun of people, and that's not really funny.

that come in these small independent films.

I thought it was pretty bad also.
