Worst songs of the 80's
Everyone always laughs about the 70's...polyester, disco, etc. But what folks don't seem to notice is that the 80's were just as bad.

Ah, the 80's: That is when Saturday Night Live became as funny as eating concrete, the nation was contaminated with Reaganomics (as well as the "Gipper" himself) and red leather and Lionel Richie Jheri-curls became a popular fashion statement.

And the first thing I think of when someone brings up the 80's is the music...the shitty tunes, that is. The ones that REALLY get me are:

"True" by Spandau Ballet. Those clowns who made the movie "Charlie's Angels" felt the need to regurgatate that crappy song by putting it on the soundtrack. They deserve to be shot for that.

"Jesse's Girl". I don't remember the artist's name, not that it is relevant...

Anything by a Flock of Seagulls.

"Don't You Forget About Me". I used to love the songs of the Psychadellic Furs-including this song. Then came the movie "The Breakfast Club" and next thing you know every radio station is playing that tune to death. I think it was some kind of Molly Ringwald fantasy a lot of pre-teens had. I have no idea.

"Take on Me" by A-Ha.

"I Love a Rainy Night" Was it Eddie Rabbit that did that song? I guess it doesn't matter: I won't lose any sleep over not knowing.

"Bring on the Dancing Horses" by Echo and the Bunnymen.

The debut of MTV didn't help, BTW. Music videos rot the minds of America's listeners, and I, too, began that video-song association whenever I listened to the radio. Made just about all of the songs of the 80's suck even more. However, I found it hysterical that-thanks to MTV-no one seemed to understand that Devo's song "Whipit" was about jerking-off.

Well, enough from me for now...what's your nomination for "Worst Song of the 80's?"

33. The only thing worse than Lee Greenwood singing that crappy song...
....was this supposed "rock band" called "Freedom Jam" who played at my high school (probably yours too)and did a horrible fake metal version of that awful song. They were really more of a Reaganite propaganda device than a band :puke:

2. Hey!

Don't You Forget About Me was by Simple Minds, not the Pyschedelic Furs. And I like that song! :)

If you want a really bad 80's song, look no farther than "Mickey" by Toni Basil...

4. Grandma got run over by a reindeer.
Edited on Sun Sep-28-03 07:50 AM by Norbert
I think Elmo and Patsy made it. It was funny the first 1000 times I heard it but after the millionth time it got old.

Elvira from the Oak Ridge Boys got on my nerves really quick.

No! Not Bring on the Dancing Horses from the Pretty in Pink movie. I thought that song was great.

BTW Jesse's Girl was by teen idol type Rick Springfield. Actually I thought the song wasn't bad. The follow-ups were decent too.

6. What Do You Think Were the Best Songs of the '80s, eauclaire
Edited on Sun Sep-28-03 08:32 AM by Crisco
Just curious.

"Don't You Forget About Me". I used to love the songs of the Psychadellic Furs-including this song.

You loved the songs of the Furs so much you confused Richard Butler's rasp with Jim Kerr's croon?

My pick for worst songs (of those I'm unfortunate enough to still remember):

anything by Steve Perry or Journey
ditto REO Spudwagon
ditto Foreigner
ditto Christopher Cross
ditto Whitesnake
ditto Winger
ditto 38 Special

anyone see a trend? heehee.

11. Ha ha UVa/Wake game yesterday I heard the UVa pep band playing a song
See UVa doesn't have an actual mrching band.

I couldn't place it at first and it sounded like elevator music, not the rah rah stuff you should hear at a football game. So I start humming the tune and it hits me.....it's "Take on Me" by Aha. No wonder Hoo'ville is not seen as a hostile environment in which to play.

13. WaHoo Wa!
UVa Cavaliers or Wahoos. 'Hoos for short and a section of the stadium is called 'Hooville heights (bad seats at the top of the closed end).

Nest year I am buying season tickets in the 'Hooville heights section (cheaper) and then sit on the grassy hill at the opposite end. It's a great way to see a game.

25. That would be "Night Ranger"
who also, paradoxically, made a song called "You can still rock in America"

Not listening to crap like that you can't!

Bad 80's music.....

Anything by:

The Thompson Twins
Haircut 100
Poison
Slaughter
Firehouse
Journey (after Jonathan Cain joined)

That stupid "I wanna be a cowboy" song
That stupider "I eat cannibals" song
The stupidest "A-E-I-O-U (and sometimes Y)" song

Joeski Love did "Pee Wee's Dance"

Boys Don't Cry did "I wanna be a Cowboy"

I've only heard of 2-3 of the songs on this whole thread! I was here in the 80s; perhaps you were just listening to the wrong radio stations?

I can't give you a good list from the 80s though. I can't really remember one way or the other!

I have both of their 80's albums, and there are some very good songs on those albums. But that song "melt with you" is absolutely atrocious
