The "pork rule" is no longer ab obligation in Islam.

I don't have any fundamentalist attributes, and I want to keep it that way. The extent of my practice is trying to follow the Five Pillars. And I don't have to follow two of them (Haj, Zakat) until I graduate from college.

17. I'm an American, and by that I mean
I have genes taken from peoples of various ethnicities from all over the planet. It's fun to remember your family roots and gain a sense of pride/respect for what they went through, but their lives were nothing like mine. I speak and read English, but live with a hispanic woman who speaks English and Spanish. I drive a foreign car and live in a house made with materials likely imported from halfway around the world. All of my clothes seem to be made in Malaysia or China. Even the vegetables I eat are mostly imported from Mexico.
I am an American by birth and choice. That means I have many differing viewpoints to consider and many choices to make that other nationalities don't have to.

56. .5 irish and .5 scottish...blond haired, green eyes, red beard...
my mothers side can trace her roots in america back to the jamestown colonies, where they were indentured servants for some years, and into the highlands prior to that...the original name being brookshaw, which was changed to brookshire after the birth of their first son. if you live in east texas, you probably recognize that name, as they own a line of grocery stores all over the area there. they have always, since their first years here in the mid 1600's, been grociers.

dads family came from ireland in the late 1800's, dropped the "o" prefix from their name, and settled in the dakotas and california.
my last name in gaelic means "of the vally of lin"

i have been to scotland during my stint in the navy, and i am planning a trip to ireland next year if the money is there.

74. I realized that as I was typing,
but was too lazy to change it to central/eastern.

Basically, my maternal grandmother's family came from every Germanic and Slavic-Jewish area and my maternal grandfather's family's background is Russian-Jewish.

Although Judaism is a religion, the fact that because of the forced isolation of European Jews beginning in the middle ages, it became somewhat of an ethnicity in central and eastern Europe--it's what happens when you isolate a community of several thousand for about a thousand years--marriage stays within the community, and when it grows to millions over time, you basically have an ethnicity.

All things considered, I consider myself to be quarter Germanic, quarter Russian, and half Mexican.

As far as what I look like, here are a couple larger pictures of me.

Me in fall of 2001, before I decided to grow my hair out. (Senior picture by Yuen Lui)

Which means, if you go back further, Norman French, Anglo-Saxon, perhaps Roman, Viking, and, going WAY back, Indo-Aryan (the Celts were the original Aryans, who moved westward from what is now India through Europe). I could keep going with this, but I think you get the idea..."ethnicity" as something fixed and determined is a rather silly concept.

77. Cuban
Most of my ancestors were from Spain (Canary Islands), but given the island's genetic make-up, there's probably more than a little Taino and African in me.

78. RE: Whats your ethnicity?
Same here. Except the Irish part. When you consider all the differing races of people that have settled in or conquered Sicily, you have to determine that Italy is only the owner of the land. You and I have the bloodlines of every race in the Med.: Italian, Greek, Moor, Turks-you name it.

83. Mix and Match
1/2 Irish, 1/4 Scottish, 1/4 English.

My wife is 1/2 Norwegian, 1/2 Venezualan

Which makes my kids...
1/4 Irish, 1/4 Norwegian, 1/4 Venezualan, 1/8 Scottish and 1/8 English...

Or, as I prefer, we're 'Americans'.

92. read on and you tell me what ethnicity I am
Father is Pilipino/Irish (grandma was conceived in Derry, half catholic half protestant and born in New York, grandpa was Spanish, Chinese and Igorot), Mother is Milanese Italian, Spanish, Shumash Indian (great great grandmother was born in the Santa Barbara Mission, Scotch/Irish wagon train emigrant (great grand father was Beasley/Strybling who came west from Missouri in the 1870's to California).

What determines my ethnicity more than national origin is where and how my parents were born and raised. In South and East Stockton in the forties and fifties Pilipinoes, Mexicans, Irish, Germans, Italians, Sikhs, and Pakistanis were neighbors and co workers, their kids went to school together and intermarried. I go to family functions now and see blood relatives from blonde to mahogany claiming to be Pilipino or Italian or Irish or Mexican.
