Who does NOT have "ignore" lists ?
Personally, I have never put anyone on "ignore". But it seems to me to be rather hypocritical to talk about "uniting" the Party and, at the same time, cannot talk to other Democrats with different viewpoints than your own. Just my opinion.

2. On DU1, I used the ignore feature from time to time
I found that as the arguments became more heated and were becoming flamefests, it was easier to take a time out for a while and not view the posts.

Within a week, I always cleared the ignore list.

11. I only use it during really really really
aggrivating spells on DU, when some posters seem to be posting just to get others' angry.

I use it when a poster develops a record of saying nothing of substance, but posting on sexual topics over and over and over and over. IOW, I use it if the extent of their posts are masturbation and "lube or not."

Also have used it on one now-tombstoned DUer whose post only discussed getting into the gallery to see "DU babes," --he even admitted that he was amassing 300 posts so he could get in. Every post was on this topic.

Otherwise, I don't use it. I welcome debate, as long as it isn't meant to be antagonistic.

HOnestly, I have only used it three times, and I took two of those off, and the othe was tombstoned, so, I guess I am not using it at present.

I can read stuff from someone that is totally absurd and do one of two things: If it's a regular poster I strongly disagree with and/or is a jerk (IMO) I will *usually* dismiss it with a "what a insert-appropriate-word-here" kind of thought and move on. If it's an obvious troll I just hit alert.

but then later changed my mind. If I want to ignore someone, I just do it with my brain. I just don't click on their posts. It's actually kind of validating. If I think someone is a jerk early on, and perhaps have a run in with them, then later I see lots of other people having run ins with them, then I know it wasn't just me ;-) . I see it happen all the time too :-) .

People who are jerks, liars, or manipulators go on my ignore list. Anti-choice people go on my ignore list (that's for my own blood pressure). People who constantly post divisive and inflammatory material go on my ignore list. There are 10's of thousands of users on DU, I'm not missing anything by ignoring the few who waste my time and piss me off.

Sure, there are a few who have irked me with their threads or their replies. I'm sure there are a number who have gotten annoyed at me, too, for some reason.

But I've never been tempted for more than a few moments to put somebody on Ignore. If they are truly that obnoxious, they'll get banned eventually. Otherwise, they might have something useful to say on occasion.

The whole point of this place is discussion. If you're looking in a mirror you'll never get upset at what you hear but after awhile there's no variety.

If I can't logically defend my views on a democratic party site, what would I be able to do in the real world?

That said, I have a fully functioning sense of self-discipline and discretion. It's a kind of mental kill-file. If you've made an annoyance of yourself one too many times, I just stop responding to you. Very effective.

I think your negative judgement of the hypocrasy of ignore lists is based on the not entirely accurate view that everyone has something worthwhile to contribute to discussion. I'd argue that. It may not be common, but I do indeed see posters on these and other fora whose only purpose seems to be in disrupting and being contentious. If I let myself be easily tempted into fruitless debate with a troll, I might well get emotionally overheated and say something ill advised. If it's a choice between being censured or banned and putting a troll on ignore, it seems an easy decision to me. No hypocrasy, just good judgement.

Some people are just in-your-face jerks. Life is too short and I'm not on my medication anymore. However, I don't have anyone on Ignore right now. I tend to put people on the list temporarily when they start a thread with a title that pisses me off. When it safely drops off the front page, I de-Ignore them. I don't think anybody's been on my list for as long as a week.

67. It's hard to type holding your ears and going "lalalalalalal
I have not used it yet, but I'm not saying I won't, and I do like the
idea about having a thread on ignore for an hour or two...

I'm not gettin all noble about why I won't, though..Remember in school when someone was maybe walking behind you and making fun of you, and all the other kids started laughing, and you didn't know why? Or maybe you had a hole in your pants, and someone said they told you, but you didn't hear them? Or you had a sign on your back, and no one told you til the end of the say? I want all the information in my face, it's a control issue, I guess.

If I think someone is, well, one of the characters from 'flame warriors' then generally I don't go on the threads they start. The freaky thing is that I've gotten p.o.d a few times and then found out the person was like, 17 or something. That makes a difference for me, I'm more likely to forgive a young asshole than a 40 year old immature one.

71. I'm not sure I understand
"It's hard to type holding your ears and going "lalalalalalal"

I suffer from severe chronic depression, have done for my entire adult life. I can't afford my medication. Avoiding something that upsets me & may put me over the edge is not the same thing as holding my ears and going lalalalalala, & if you're saying that it is, I resent that.

I'm not eloquent or witty like some of the others who have posted on this thread, so I can't prettify what I'm trying to say. I am working for the candidate of my choice. I do not bash other candidates. I come to DU because I want to see what other Dems are thinking & doing, & I like to participate in some of the discussions here. Choosing to block out posts from a member that I know from experience will only upset me is what I must do to maintain, & it is wrong to belittle me for that.

74. That was a reply to me, and I think generally agreeing
Anyway, it wasn't a reply to you, so you can safely ignore (there's that word again) it. As far as I can figure, saying "I can't type and hold my ears and say 'LALALALALA'" is another way of endorsing the Ignore feature. If not, it hardly struck me as a particularly vicious attack; I thought it was funny. At any rate, you've got to follow the little arrows and indentations. #67 wasn't a reply to your post.

75. Thanks for pointing that out to me
<hangs head> Here I finally muster up the courage to defend myself against what I perceive as an attack, & it wasn't even a reply to me.

My sincere apologies to alaine.

66. I've never used it.
Though freerepublic.com is on my mental "ignore list"

69. I've never used it
I would be to curious what someone may say in the future--it would drive me nuts to have someone on ignore.

70. I've never used ignore
if I don't like someone I don't have to read them or maybe I will because I want to see what they are saying. I don't agree with some people at all and find them disruptive but I still would not put them on ignore.

72. Never have used it--even forgot it was there...
If someone really annoys me or a thread really disturbs me--I just go to another thread. Until someone mentions it--I usually forget about it.

73. I have never used the ignore feature. When I am not
moderating I just skip the threads that aggravate me.
