3. OK
My favorite present as a child was actually just a stuffed animal! I had wanted a cat for a long time, but my parents said no. Then I asked for this grey plush cat I saw at a store. They wouldn't get it for me. The next time we went to the store it was gone, and I was really upset (I was 8, OK?) But it was because they got it for me for Christmas.

The next year, I got the real grey cat. (I still have both of them). :)

The toy I wanted but never got was the Easy Bake Oven. I think this is why I am such a mediocre cook today... I missed out on that early training.

After age 16... that's tough, I don't think I've received anything but clothes since then!

4. Hard to say, really, but my Mongoose BMX bike
was pretty freakin sweet! Of course, the matching blue safety pads and reflectors had to come right off to de-uncool it :7, then the Bullseye sealed hubs and some other expensive rims whose name I forgot went on, and I was FLYIN

5. Best was white knee-high patent leather
go-go boots (when I was like 6 :D)

One I never got was a nose job. x(

Best one after 16 was when my parents refinished the space over the garage into a fab loft type apt so I could have my own room ala Greg Brady. ;)

7. I don't think I ever wanted anything specific really badly
We were very poor and I was one of six kids - any gift that wasn't a hand me down was really special!

The best gift I ever got (pre-16) was an Easy Bake Oven (sorry Lavender). That was a thrill.

I haven't celebrated Christmas since 1975 so there are no after 16 stories.

8. Here's the list
Best presents as a child: I have to pick two. My first watch and my Easy Bake Oven. I loved them both.

I really wanted the toy kitchen when I was a kid - I never got it.

Best present since I was 16: A ring. It was my grandmother's and then my mother's. For years I begged my mother for it. She said that I would get it when she died. I argued that it would have a sad memory attached to it then. One year, I got it for Christmas - you could have knocked me over with a feather.

9. A Barbie house (1962, I think)
It was a fold-out made of cardboard, with cardboard 'Slot-A fits into Slot B' furniture, tiny cardboard record albums and an aluminum foil mirror. I played with that thing much too long.

Present that I wanted but didn't get: a chemistry set. Maybe that's a good thing. My husband received a chemistry set as a youngster, and caused a house fire with it.

Best present after 16: a huge basket filled with kitchen gadgets, spices, vinegars, etc. I love gadgets.

10. I remember only a few
I would say that my first guitar at the age of 6 or 7 from my grandmother was a favorite. The truth is, ever since I could remember all I looked for under the tree was the unmistakable wrappings of a brand new record album. I would get a few each year and that's all I cared about.
One that I knew I wanted and never got (courtesy of a letter to Santa that my mother still has) was a "bass guitar like Peter Tork".
After 16? Nothing stands out.

11. my best was a safari play set I go when I was around 5 or 6 yrs old..
thank god my mom didn't believe girls had to just have dolls..it had a jeep and animals, etc...

one I wanted and never got was a 22 rifle..she did think guns were for guys only...I wanted one cause my male cousins and uncles and grandpa always practiced shooting at grandpa and grandmas house and I wanted to be outside w/them doing the same thing....

since age 16?...guess it would be a new washing machine...but only cause of the story that goes with it...my washer went out right before xmas..and we went and got a new one...and my youngest son (about 5 yrs old) was sure that santa brought it cause he asked santa to bring mommy a new washing machine...

18. Best present - Barbie Dream House
I still remember that feeling when I saw it put together under the tree.

The one present I wanted but never got, was Air Hockey. I was done with Barbie, going through a tomboy stage and wanted it sooo bad. I got Pivot Pool instead. Mom and Dad waited too long to shop and could not find Air Hockey anywhere. It was really popular that year.

After age 16 the best present was from a friend who had a verse from my favorite Robert Frost poem engraved on a key chain. I was so touched because it was the most thoughtful gift. I barely remember telling him about my favorite poem, but he remembered. I still get sentimental thinking about his kindness. I still have that key chain, and it is scratched and battered from years of of being jostled around in my purse.

For anyone interested the verse is:

"But the flower leaned aside
and thought of naught to say
and morning found the breeze
a hundred miles away."

Can you name the poem?

21. a davy crocket musket
That fired cork minnie balls. I think I pretty much got what I wanted badly. We mainly got one big present and sweaters and stuff. But back in the 60s, there was always just the ONE big one, IIRC.
