If men had periods...by Gloria Steinem (1970s feminist humor)
Edited on Mon Jul-07-03 08:01 AM by jchild
by Gloria Steinem (written during the 1970s)

Since history was recorded, male human beings have built whole cultures around the idea that penis-envy is "natural" to women - though having such an unprotected organ might be said to make men more vulnerable, and the power to give birth makes womb-envy at least logical. In short, logic has nothing to do with it. What would happen, for instance, if suddenly, magically, men could menstruate and women could not? The answer is clear - menstruation would become an enviable, boast-worthy, masculine event:

Men would brag about how long and how much.

Boys would mark the onset of menses, that longed-for proof of manhood, with religious ritual and stag parties.

The US Congress would fund a National Institute of Dysmenorrhea to help stamp out monthly discomforts.

Sanitary supplies would be federally funded and free. (Of course, some men would still pay for the prestige of commercial brands such as John Wayne Tampons, Muhammed Ali's Rope-a-dope Pads, Joe Namath Jock Shields - "For Those Light Bachelor Days," and Robert "Baretta" Blake Maxi-Pads.)

Military men, right-wing politicians, and religious fundamentalists would cite menstruation ("MENstruation") as proof that only men could serve in the army ("You have to give blood to take blood"), occupy political office ("Can women be aggresive without that steadfast cycle governed by the planet Mars?"), be priests and ministers ("how could a woman give her blood for our sins"), or rabbis ("Without the monthly loss of impurities, women remain unclean").

Male radicals, left-wing politicians, and mystics, however, would insist that women are equal, just different; and that any woman could enter their ranks if only she were willing to self-inflict a major wound every month ("You must give blood for the revolution"), recognize the preeminence of menstrual issues, or subordinate her selfness to all men in their Cycle of Enlightenment.

Street guys would brag ("I'm a three-pad man") or answer praise from a buddy (" Man, you are lookin' good") by giving fives and saying, "Yeah, man, I'm on the rag!"

TV shows would treat the subject at length. ("Happy Days": Richie and Potsie try to convince Fonzie that he is still "The Fonz," though he has missed two periods in a row.)

So would newspapers. (JUDGE CITES MONTHLY STRESS IN PARDONING RAPIST.)

And movies. (Newman and Redford in "Blood Brothers"!)

Men would convince women that intercourse was more pleasurable at "that time of the month." Lesbians would be said to fear blood and therefore life itself - though probably only because they needed a good menstruating man.

Of course, male intellectuals would offer the most moral and logical arguements. How could a woman master any discipline that demanded a sense of time, space, mathematics, or measurement, for instance, without that in-built gift for measuring the cycles of the moon and planets - and thus for measuring anything at all? In the rarefied fields of philosophy and religion, could women compensate for missing the rhythm of the universe? Or for their lack of symbolic death-and-resurrection every month?

*********

No, this isn't meant to be a man-bashing thread, but for a moment of humor. It comes from the seventies, when the main goal was to get ERA ratified. Anyway, I think, although it is 30 years old, it is timeless.

2. Probably right
Though I would tend to think that men would be even more macho about it than Gloria could capture.

It's like the saying goes: "If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament".

5. "Have you got a tampon in your truck?"
Check out Margaret Cho's Notorious C.H.O.: she does a priceless bit about how men would deal with periods. "Guys would use old socks. Bachelor apartments would look like murder scenes."

9. I wouldn't apologize or explain that it isn't a male bashing thread
It's good to be sensitive to an issue but even the most transformed man seems to think it's OK to dismiss a woman's mood or forcefulness of her opinion based on "what time of the month it is."

Which would add another point to the article....if men menstruated then if it were that time of the month, they would be using their special sensitivity to make decisions only a menstruating man can make.
All references to uncleanliness in the bible would be removed and studies would reveal that these were not actual scrolls but an error in the original interpretation of pre historic text.

but I am still a little hesitant after giving my take on the calendar (I cringe) threads a couple of weeks ago.

Good points!

11. You shouldn't be.
You didn't say anything wrong. Male bashing isn't right. I think bashing is forming a generalization of ALL men rather than SOME men. I have never seen you say anything about ALL men. If people with good sense don't stand up for themselves at Du then bad sense or no sense at all will rule the day.

15. If men had periods (read babies), the human race
would have died out long ago; the first man who endured labor would have been the last.

Still, gotta love 'em (at least if you're straight!).

Thanks, I hadn't seen that in years.

18. a poem
by Lucille Clifton

Wishes for Sons

i wish them cramps
i wish them a strange town
and the last tampon
i wish them no 7-11.

i wish them one week early
and wearing a white skirt.
i wish them one week late.

later i wish them hot flashes
and clots like you
wouldn't believe. let the
flashes come when they
meet someone special.
let the clots come
when they want to.

let them think they have accepted
arrogance in the universe,
then bring them to gynecologists
not unlike themselves.

20. I know I'm going to mess this up, but didn't Trumad
say something like if men could get pregnant, then there would be abortion clinics on every corner, like the Jiffy Lube chain, or something... Oh well, I tried...

Nice to see a few references to Cho, but you can't get the full affect without hearing it, it's "Notorius C.H.O" and it's awesome, her frat-boy what-the-fuck speak is the bomb-"yo, dude, you got a tampon in your truck?"

Why are we so fucking hesitant with the "male-bashing" crap, women are as afraid of that as the left is as a whole with the "unpatriotic, unamerican" speak. Just post this stuff if you want to and don't apologize, some freaks on here delight in pushing the limits and I don't hear them apologizing, ever.

Bash this, motherfuckers. ; )

25. Because I am a bleedingheart liberal ;-)
Actually, it is because the lounge devolved into utter chaos a couple of weeks ago, over a couple of calendar threads and sexist posts...I also though the disclaimer would deter some of the posters who are still with us , who like to jump on any feminists threads with stupid posts, from posting.

And, lastly, I am just a bleedingheart who loves men and women and wants us all to get along ;-)

21. IF?
Men certainly don't menstruate, but like women, men have a monthly cycle of hormone production, too, and scientists have demonstrated that men can be just as irritable as women at certain times of the month. The interesting thing is that the male hormonal period is somewhat longer than the female, averaging about 30 days, IIRC. And god help you if you catch us at the wrong time. :D
