He's smart, funny, a two-fisted drinker, and he ALWAYS comes through in the clutch, even if he says things will take twice as long to fix as they actually will.

The episodes when Scotty took command of the Enterprise are some of my favorites. ("Queen to Queen's level three..." Nothing gets past that guy.)

And the actor, James Doohan, by all accounts is a great guy, on top of being a World War II hero who actually lost a finger in the war. (They kept it covered up on Star Trek by hiding his hand behind consoles, clipboards, etc. Apparently amputated digits are supposed to regenerate in the 23rd century.)

Plus, you have to at least give Scotty credit for having worn a red shirt for three years and not dying.
