Help me fill up my Netflix queue to even more ridiculous lengths
Need movie recommendations, ESPECIALLY good foreign films, as I'm painfully ignorant of them.

1. A few of my recommendations
Koyaanisqatsi
Powaqqatsi
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV series)
Perfect Blue
Serial Experiment Lain (TV series)

The last three are anime, but all of them kick mad ass.

3. Also, I'm looking for "cult" stuff
Like "Bad Taste" and stuff like that, as my local video stores suck balls in that department as well. Also, movies from the 70s "Golden Age".

7. If you want foreign films, consider...
La Femme Nikita
Grave of the Fireflies
Ran
Yojimbo
Rashomon
The Seven Samurai
The Hidden Fortress
City of God
Aguirre, The Wrath of God
The Battleship Potemkin
Metropolis (the old black and white one)
Picnic at Hanging Rock

For domestic films, I'd recommend seeing these to be competent with the most defining films of their genres or for their technical accomplishments:

Birth of a Nation
Citizen Kane
Dr. Strangelove
Easy Rider
The Wild Bunch
Bonnie and Clyde
Double Indemnity
A Place in the Sun
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
On the Waterfront

10. a few foreign films I have enjoyed, not including anime...
I love anime, and wish I spoke fluent Japanese. But if you want anime recommendations, start a separate thread. I'll restrict myself to live action here.

Bread and Chocolate -- bittersweet comedy about an Italian immigrant trying to make a living in socially-segregated Switzerland

Seven Samurai -- widely hailed as the genre-buster for all future action films, one of Kurosawa's many greats

Das Boot -- action/drama about a U-boat crew in WW2, mostly filmed from submarine interior sets

Pink Floyd at Pompeii -- the single best rock concert film ever made, IMHO; PF playing their very early music in the ruined ampitheatre, with only the palpably present spirits of the long-dead as audience

Amélie (aka Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain) -- wry French romantic comedy about a girl who takes it upon herself to improve the lives of her fellow Parisians

Killing Zoe -- French action/drama about a bank robbery gone horribly awry, with a peculiar and improbable romantic side story

Rabbit-Proof Fence -- following the travels by foot of three "re-educated" aborigine girls back to their homes across the Australian outback

El Norte -- not exactly a foreign film, but rather an all-too-local tragedy film, as two young Guatemalans leave their decimated country in a migratory attempt to reach the fabled "North", a land of great riches and greater disappointments

Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) -- beautiful and musical Brazillian retelling of the tragedy of Eurydice and Orpheus, with a sublime soundtrack from Antonio Jobim

11. Foreign greatness
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 11:42 PM by BigMcLargehuge
The Hypnotist, a great Japanese horror/mystery with a great ending.

Gamera Guardian of the Univere, Gamera 2, and Gamera 3. The three best giant monster movies made since 1954. Gamera 2 and 3 are very dark.

Ghost in the Shell, Masamune Shirow's tale of machines gone mad and the cyborgs sent to stop them. Visually stunning with an incredible score by Kenji Kawai.

Amelie, French magical realism at its best.

M, Fritz Lang's 1930's masterpiece of crime and punishment

If you get Yojimbo, get the sequel Sanjuro, equally as good. And, one can never get enough Toshiro Mifune.

Try those.

15. ROan Inish not a foreign film
THis movie is an American fim. That movie was directed by John Sayles, who ironically enough, is the most liberal/Progressive director out there. He writes and directs his own pictures and if you want to see some of his best check out "MATEWAN" on the Coal Miners Union, "EIGHT MEN OUT" on the Black Sox Scandal and "Lonestar" a smart whodunnit.

14. I'll assume "Grave of Fireflies"
If you haven't seen it, put it at the head.

Danton, if you can find it. Starred Gerard Depardieu. The director was inspired by Lech Walensa.

The Return of Martin Guirre, with Gerard Depardieu.

A Pure Formality, with Roman Polanski and (damnit, this isn't on purpose) Gerard D. (He's like Kevin Bacon in French films.)

The Voyagers-- an Australian film about a group of medieval peasants who wind up in the modern world. Sounds trite, but it's very neat. Slightly reminiscent of The Seventh Seal.

And a really obscure one-- A Dream of Passion, with Ellen Burstyn, and Milana Mercuri (sp?). Best film you've never seen if you haven't. It's hard to find, not sure if it's even on DVD.

16. "Night on Earth" is a fav of mine
Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 03:15 AM by alphafemale
It is a string of vignettes nearly all of which occur inside taxicabs on different parts of the planet.

Some parts are tragic, some parts are hilarious. It is all human.

(You may never again look at a pumpkin quite the same way though.)

17. "Waking Ned Devine" -- Goofy title, terrific film.
"A gem. This flick is a blast. Writer/director Kirk Jones has put together a brilliantly quirky set of characters. It's terrifically funny and great fun. Trust me on this one. See this movie. Waking Ned Devine is highly recommended."
