Who has a more eclectic taste in music than me?
Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 06:16 PM by a_random_joel
I enjoy and am comfortably well versed in the following genres:

1. Classical
2. Classic Rock
3. Alternative Rock(New wave, 80's, technopop type stuff)
4. Gothic/Industrial
5. Electronica - Techno, House, Drum N Bass, Downtempo
6. Hip Hop, mostly stuff before 1994
7. Funk/Old school/Disco
8. Lounge/Instrumentals
9. Old school Dr. Demento type stuff

I also very much enjoy jazz - although I'm not nearly as schooled in it as I'd like to be.

And reggae - although my exposure is limited primarily to Bob Marley.

I also enjoy any weird, synthesized or otherwise off the wall music.

The only music I cannot stomach is the new "alternative"(with a few exceptions) , country (except for Patsy Cline), 80's glam metal, any real hard metal, and commercial boy/girl-band stuff.

On Edit - "Oldies" too! Motown, surf, bubblegum and the like...

Try this station, they stream usually. You can't find a more diverse playlist than this one, imho.

2. ME! ME! (apologies to Skittles)
I am well-versed in all you list, as well as the exceptions you make for yourself. Comes of working in record stores for ten years. I like at least SOME artists from all those genres, INCLUDING "commercial" stuff and country.

G'head, ask me anything. :)

I don't actively play anything anymore as I'm domesticated now.

But, I started off in gradeschool on flute. Progressed to Sax (alto, tenor, and my fav - Baritone).

Played Bass Drum in Marching Band for a year, as we did not have enough good people to fill out our drum corps.

Taught myself guitar, bass and keyboards(not classically trained - mainly for writing.)

The only thing I have actually achieved any "success" with, i.e. gotten paid for - is as a DJ. I was an "underground" club DJ in the early to mid 90s in the techno/acid house scene.

I still enjoy tinkering with electronic music production on my computer, as I still am a huge fan of electronic music and anything synthesized. And I still mix as a bedroom DJ.

BTW, I don't speak German. Cheers.

7. Sure, have at it!
As for your question above, 30-year old woman here, I love nSync and Christina Aguilera. Own records by Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys.

Here, quickly, read my street cred before you freak out:

1. Saw Black Flag and Minor threat in the same weekend at the old 9:30 Club in DC when I was 13.

2. Kissed Rob Zombie

3. Can name and identify in a picture every member of Strength in Numbers

4. Know the words to every Aretha Franklin song ever recorded

5. Can rap 12 Outkast songs in full (yes, I sound like a silly white girl when I do it, but I know all the words. :) )

12. Ok
Take a stab at these

1."It Takes Two" by Rob Base features the breakbeat and hook from what song/artist?

2.What famous disco producers produced several of Duran Duran's albums - It's Ok to just name the band they are known for?

3.After the lead singer went solo, Bauhaus became which two bands? Name the singer and the bands. Extra points for the other members?

4.Techno producer Richard H. Kirk is originally from this industrial band?

5.The Yardbirds eventually became?

If you have some you want me to take a stab at, I'll try.

26. Some of the answers
<<Take a stab at these>>

<<1."It Takes Two" by Rob Base features the breakbeat and hook from what song/artist?>>

"Think (About It)," Lyn Collins (1972)

<<2.What famous disco producers produced several of Duran Duran's albums - It's Ok to just name the band they are known for?>>

Those guys from Chic; their names elude me at the moment.

<<3.After the lead singer went solo, Bauhaus became which two bands? Name the singer and the bands. Extra points for the other members?>>

OK, ya got me on that one.

<<4.Techno producer Richard H. Kirk is originally from this industrial band?>>

Ya got me on that one, too.

<<5.The Yardbirds eventually became?>>

Led Zeppelin.

If you have some you want me to take a stab at, I'll try.

Lynn Collins - I'm impressed!

The Chic answer is correct - their names are Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers. I believe Nile Rogers daughter was a backup singer for Duran as well.

Yardbirds = Led Zeppelin. But that was an easy one.

Good job!

Okay, here goes, and I didn't cheat!

1. That's definitely a song that's on James Brown's Funky People, and I know Lynn Collins sings it, but I can't remember the name of the song. I love that record! Wait, is it Mama Feelgood?

2. Hmm, dunno this one. Didn't Chris Kimsey produce some of their records?

3. Well, Love and Rockets, obviously, but I can't remember the Peter Murphy band. I know he had some solo records, how about Love and Rockets and Peter Murphy solo career? ;-) Does that count?

4. Cabaret Voltaire!!

5. Cream?

I did pretty badly! Oh well, I'm getting old, lol. I'll post some trivia for you later. :)

32. "Don't You forget about Me!"
1. Good call - Lynn Collins (the female preacher). The tune is "Think(about it)"

2. Chic - Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards

3. Tones on Tail(remember "GO!" - "yayaya, yaya, yayaya" and Love & Rockets. Daniel Ash and David J. Peter Murphy did go solo, but just as Peter Murphy (remember "Cuts You up")?
David J and Daniel Ash also had solo albums, though not as successful.

4. OK, I'm impressed. Very nice.

5. Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page was guitarist in Yardbirds, but the Eric Clapton link makes Cream a good guess.

33. Answers and a retort and a quiz.
ANSWERS:
1: Think-Lynn Collins
2: Nile Rodgers produced a lot of Duran Duran, and he also produced tons of Donna Summer
3: Love and Rockets and Tones on Tail
4: Cabaret Voltaire
5: The Yardbirds became a lot (including the New Yardbirds), since the members included Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck!!! But I guess the answer you're looking for is Led Zepplin

I only cheated on one (couldn't remember the name Tones on Tail)

RETORT:
I know you're saying this in good fun, but when you say "Does anyone have a more eclectic taste than me in music?" it comes across as pretty arrogant.

And I would say I do. I've been organist in a church, sung in a professional opera chorus, studied classical and jazz piano for about 15 years, played in a punk band, and now produce my own electronic music. I would say I am well versed in: electronica (plus all it's genres), punk, rock (and metal), hip-hop, jazz, reggae (plus all it's genres), blues and pop. Less well versed in country, noise, classical and east Asian music. Just starting to get my head round the east Asian stuff, especially Korean music, which is extremely haunting (the court music) and very rythymical (the farmers music).

QUIZ:
1: Kurt Cobain was roadie for what grunge rock group?

2: Name all the aliases Richard D. James has recorded under.

3: What is the name of the Negativland radio show and how long have they been on the air?

4: How many works for piano did Bach compose?

5: Who is Sir Coxsone?

:)

PS: To Az......scooter? Please, go listen to some good hardcore like Nasenbluten, anything on the Deathchant label or some Venetian Snares (for the adventurous time sig hardcore!!). And Chinese/Japanese/Korean pop is almost exactly the same as western pop.

3. Tuff Gong
4. Wow. That's a lot. Pigface, 1000 Homo DJs, Revolting Cocks, Lard, Buck Satan and a few more I'm sure
5. FSOL has recorded as Amorphous Androgynous, Stakker and Headstone Lane are the only 3 I know.

63. No prob
Good effort.

1. "Take Me To the Mardi Gras" by Bob James. If you like funky fusion jazz - do yourself a favor and listen to some Bob James.

2. Derrick May, Juan Atkins and... Kevin "Master Reece" Saunderson.
Good guess on Richie Hawtin, him and John Aquaviva are certainly influential, but they are not "Gods" of techno like the 3. Of course Saunderson is now known more for house, but...

3. Yup

4. You left out Acid Horse, Lead into Gold, Pailhead, W.E.L.T. but still impressive.

5. Good guess. Actually, it's not Stakker - it's Humanoid. The name of the song is Stakker Humanoid, but still a good guess to even know Stakker. There's also: Smart Systems, Yage, Indo Tribe, Mental Cube, Metropolis, Yunie, Candese, Aircut, Art Science Technology, Semi Real, Homeboy and Far-Out Son of Lung.

Not too shabby.

They also did record under the name Stakker for the "Eurotechno" album.

Those were tough, I haven't thought about Ministry for a good few years now. Should have done better with the FSOL question though.

I like Bob James, but to be honest, I never got into Run-DMC all that much. heh.

69. Technically
Eurotechno was produced by Brian Dougans from FSOL; I don;t think Garry Cobain is credited. A minor distinction and not worth nitpicking over. Anyways, I thought you were referring to the tune Stakker Humanoid, which was released under the artist name Humanoid.

As for Ministry, I don't even listen to Ministry anymore, which is weird because in my younger days I thought Alain Jourgensen was THE MAN. Oh well, getting older I guess.

1. I am guessing here, early Seattle, maybe Green River or Malfunkshun?

2. Rick James? Don't know of any others.

3. Something about the Edge, and I have no idea how long it's been on the air, but I know it's out of California! There was an article about it in CMJ, I think, I've never heard the show.

4. No clue, but my mother had an LP when I was a kid called "The Little Bach Book" and it was all quiet Bach piano music. It was really lovely.

5. It's dub, that's all I know. I don't know the person's real name. I've never heard the music. I just remember selling the CD's.

That was hard!

Edited on Tue Jul-15-03 11:56 AM by a_random_joel
My original post was not intended to be arrogant but rather a segue into a broader discussion of music, which I think I may have achieved, as you are here and we are discussing music.

But, by all means, if you want me to play the part of an arrogant bastard - I have no problem with that, and will accomodate you.

As for your quiz:

1. The Melvins

2. Aphex Twin, AFX, Polygon Window, Gak, Powerpill - I know there's more, but that's all I can get off the top of my head.

3. Not familiar with that

4. Sorry...

5. Isn't he a ska artist?

I like this game. Let me think of a tougher one to give you. Especially since you know electronic stuff - most people don't.

Edit for spelling.

Quiz

1: Yes correct, The Melvins
2: All those you mentioned, plus The Dice Man, Caustic Window, Mike and Rich, Bradley Strider and oooh one more but the name escapes me.
3: The name of the show is "Over the Edge" and it began in 1981.
4: Actually this was a trick question, as the piano wasn't developed to a satisfactory degree until late in Bach's life. So probably all of his keyboard music was composed for harpsichord or organ.
5: Real name is Clement Dodd, and he is one of the greatest reggae producers ever. Studio One is very famous.

Will have to check your quiz tomorrow, as it's time for me to catch some sleep.

Apologies again, I certainly don't want to upset people on here. Just a little too blunt in my speaking I guess.

The Monkees
Barry Manilow
Klezmer (Eastern European Jewish music)
Eminem and some rap (I prefer politically inspired rap that challenges the status quo, not the crap that insults women). Eminem speaks from a working-class perspective.
Classical (although I am not well versed, I like it when I hear it)
Beatles
70s disco
Some 80s music

Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 06:00 PM by Richardo
I have purchased music and am somewhat conversant in the following categories:

1. Classical (except Opera)
2. Classic Rock
3. Alternative Rock (including unclassifiable stuff like Solex and Brave Combo)
4. Blues
5. Jazz (Big band and small combos)
5. Bluegrass and Western Swing
6. Funk (60s ad 70s era)
7. Ska
8. Broadway Scores
9. Novelty (Spike Jones, Stan Freburg, Firesign Theater)

About all I cannot abide is house-techno-electro-space music, teeny pop, gangsta, and opera.

14. Not a bad list to start with
I like everybody and everything from the Residents through grand opera. I have a great deal of trouble listening to anything slick and overproduced and aimed at the brainless pop crowd. I especially dislike the oxymoronic Christian rock. I adore Satie, find myself getting irritated with the Romantics, but that's just old age, I guess. I used to like hiphop when I'd hear it on a boom box on the subway, but it just sounds silly out west, even in this shabby neighborhood.

The rest of you are permitted to like what you like. Play it loud, play it often, and DANCE.

Sound like you don't place any value on musical styles or the demand that certain styles put on the musicians. As long as someone claims it to be music, you will say, you like it.

18. Sorry, but
I place tremendous value on musical styles. As a musician and DJ myself I have just been exposed to an extraordinarily wide variety, and each has rubbed off on me. Many people stick to only one or two styles because they DON'T value the music; they value the image being associated with a given style affords them. I learned, fortunately, a long time ago, that image means nothing. Nor do I care about "belonging". I just like what I like, and could give a "f**k" what anyone else thinks, as long as I am enjoying myself and expanding my awareness and education.

Each of those aforementioned styles "means" something to me(provides value), each in their own distinct way. Even the ones that seem to run counter to each other. Ultimately I think most musicians are fairly tolerant of other genres, even those that don't fit their image. After all, a musician must constantly seek new inspirations/adaptations or they become stale rather quickly.

And for a DJ (not radio, club) openmindedness is essential to success.

19. Sheesh, your stuck in the USSA
Now catch some Pop jams coming out of China (Leon Lai) or visual kai (Malice Mizer, Dir En Grey, Gackt) from Japan. Or how bout some techno rave mixes from Germany (Scooter, Blumchen). Want some sophistication with your metal then try some Apocalyptica from Finland (Metalica and metal jams played on Cellos). In a dark mood? Lets go to Yogoslavia and check out the dangerously angry Laibach. Want some social commentary with your dance music? Then head over to Austria and list to Yello. In the mood for more dance? Want some brimstone mixed in? Then head for South America and check out 666. Coming up from the south we find Thalia dancing up a storm in Mexico.

You could limit yourself the the US for your music fix. But there is an entire world of music out there that is available. Don't limit yourself to one vein of the unbelievably rich field of music.

20. My taste in all things electronic
has exposed me to much global music.

Belgian techno - mmmmm!
U.K. Jungle - mmmm mmmm!
German Industrial - Einsturzende Neubaten; who can deny the mighty influence of Kraftwerk?

Also somewhat familiar with Laibach, and Yello.

So I'm not limited to only U.S. stuff. But you're right - other country's fare would open me up to new possibilities.

34. Another Gackt fan!?!
I want to have his babies. Gorgeous enough to sop up with a biscuit and he's got a voice that could melt butter.

*cough*

Seriously though, I'm a huge visual fan! Malice Mizer (post-Tetsu MM, thanks, and I prefer Gackt to Klaha), L'Arc~en~Ciel, Jeanne d'Arc, Glay, Dir En Grey, all great bands. Actually I also like a lot of J-Pop too, one of my favorites is bird (she's got this whole funk/jazz thing going on). I'm also a huge Utada Hikaru fan, she has such a soulful voice and if you've ever seen her you wouldn't expect that voice to come out of that mouth, hehe. Ayumi Hamasaki is cool too, definitely music that makes you want to shake it. :)

I love Canto and Mandarin Pop too (the Mandarin stuff's just a little more "old fashioned"). Faye Wong (who I discovered thanks to Squaresoft), Sammi Cheng, Coco Lee, Jacky Cheung--all great artists.

I completely agree with you about broadening your musical horizons. I hardly listen to American music anymore, cause it seems like everyone else is doing it much better LOL. I like watching the world music program on Worldlink TV for new sounds. I find myself liking a lot of the Greek music they play on there. I always get a lot of flack from people who just listen to American top 40 crap, basically along the lines of "why do you listen to that stuff if you can't understand the words". My answer is that music is the universal language, and I don't need to know the language to shake my booty. :)

Edited on Mon Jul-14-03 07:47 PM by scarletlib
Show tunes from Rodgers and Hammerstein, etc. -- I can do whole shows plus all of the above. In addition I'm really into Celtic Music, ancient music--Renaissance and Gregorian, Country music of the fifties--especially Hank Williams, Rhythym and Blues, American Music of the 20's and 30's (precursors of much of today's country, blues, etc,) and World Music

On edit: folk music too

22. Let's see
I'm not as familiar with some of it as I would like to be, but some of it is hard to find.

1. Blues - (most type from BB King to RL Burnside)
2. Classic rock - (Hendrix, The Who, Cream)
3. Celtic - (from the Chieftains to Rawlin's Cross)
4. Reggae - (Mostly Bob Marley too, and Third World)
5. Zydeco - (Clifton Chenier and Boozoo Chavis)
6. Latin - (like Shakira's earlier Spanish stuff)
7. Rai & Middle Eastern Music - (classical as well as pop)
8. Hip hop - (Heavy D and Arrested Development, and Wyclef)
9. Bluegrass - (which I only discovered with O Brother, Where Art Thou)

I like some Electronica although I really don't know much about it. Same with Classical, I'm most familiar with Mozart and Borodin.

Is that eclectic enough for you?

39. Someone after my own heart
I don't really like Latin music though. Not sure why, but I think it's cause my only exposure to it is the stuff blasting out of the radios in the bodega next door, hehe.

I'm starting to get into bluegrass to thanks to O Brother Where Art Thou. I loved the music in that movie so much I went out and bought the soundtrack (something I rarely do).

You're into Celtic stuff too? How about Capercaille (sp?), they're pretty neat. My taste leans more toward the New Agey kind (I guess I'm a typical Pagan).

My record and CD collection covers a fully century, from 1901 - today. And it encompasses more genres than you could shake a stick at, baby!

28. I don't have a broad collection...................
.....but my tastes are rather eclectic.

Martin Newell is a personal fave.

Kevin Ayres is another.

And David Sylvian.

At one time, about the only thing I listened to was Gong.

I enjoy lots of different genres, and don't dislike any of them. I just don't collect them all.

And I wouldn't automatically discount a band or performer just because they were successful or popular. So I'm not really a music snob.

But I do enjoy scratching beneath the surface.

30. Ooh, some more
The music of India is starting to explode. Check out an album called the Best of Bollywood. For those unfamiliar with Bollywood it refers to the India movie industry. One of the hallmarks of Bollywood films is that everyone of them has to have a music video in it(at least one). A song can break out any moment in Bollywood and frequently does. The vocal explosions are astounding.

Of course there is the continuing music explosion coming from Africa. The polyrhthmic beats exploring paths unheard of here in the states.

37. That's not really all that eclectic
I like all the same stuff too, except for that kind of techno that you have to be on drugs to appreciate (the raver stuff). Definitely not my style.

Eclectic is when you've got iTunes on shuffle and it goes from darkwave to a J-Pop anime opening to baroque to German industrial to Arabic techno belly dancing music to Dusty Springfield. :)

Break out of the American box dude, there's a lot of sweet music out there. :)

52. Cutting out classic country is cutting out a lot...did you know
that Hank Jr. is an accomplished classical musician...? Every once in awhile he pulls Beethoven out of his hat at a concert, and it's totally mesmerizing.. I still think he's a creep, but I respect his musical talent, and his ecletical taste in music..;-)

I like your list though very much. Glad to not see 'rap' per se on it. We'll have to get into specifics someday; all that typing. Music/Film Major UCLA leaves me little alternative but to put on Yoko Ono to disperse too high, undesirable hangers-on guests at the end an otherwise joyous par-te ~

I like any kind of music, the same as you, but it seems that you don't apreciatte the rumba, salsa, merengue, tango, and any cultural music. when I was a kid my mom used to listen to the oldies, so my favorite at that time was Elvis and Chuck. Then when I spent more time with my older sisters I started to like disco music, and my favorite that time was bee gees. Then at 80's my older brother like pop music, at that time I like to spend time with him, but I also like metal music and some Classic Rock and some 70's pop music. At 90's I liked Salsa and latin music very much . Now there is a new era and electronic music ir going,so it is my favorite right now. I'm a music fan
