What's your favorite punk band?
I figure at least some of you old bastards like punk. So anyway, mine would be the apolitical Alkaline Trio.

2. A tie between Wire and "Funhouse"-era Stooges
...although I suppose neither of these would technically be considered "punk".

Honorable Mentions (in no particular order) to:

* Gang of Four (punky, militant AND funky-- do the math!)
* Paul Revere and the Raiders (fuck the silly costumes, they could ROCK in their day).
* The MC5 (maybe not 'punk', but loud and political as hell)
* KILLING JOKE (although their style is actually a colision between 70s metal, punk and dub reggae. Either way they still pack a whallop, and singer Jez's apocalyptic visions are harrowing to say the least).

Glad to see somebody still gives a damn about the OL' SKOOL punks, too!

My vote goes to Black Flag, my own band opened for them once, got to meet them back in the day.

The closest "brush with fame" I ever had was when we opened at the bottom of a four-band bill for "Coffin Break", who were semi-known around Seattle. This was back around 1987-88 I believe. BFD, I know.

Now that I'm older and "more refined" {snigger}, I play flamenco guitar. But I still love to pull out the Strat and Fender Twin and kick some serious ass now and then, too! :D

ohshit, almost forgot, who can ever forget
THE BAD BRAINS!

The first ROIR cassette in particular in all its gritty magnificence is still bone-rattling.

Because these old catelogues get sold off. Hearing "You Really Got Me" on TV ads could NEVER put me off the Kinks.

And how about that hideous jeans ad that turned John Fogerty's great anti-jingoistic anthem, Fortunate Son into a "patriotic" theme by excising all but the first line? Made me barf. But I still love that song.

51. Link Wray
"Rumble" was about a dance-floor fight (in the days before there was a mosh pit). Some stations banned it for being too violent. His music was fast and angry, with titles like "Jack the Ripper" and "Switchblade". He donned the Black Leather 50's rocker look (his label tried to clean that up a bit, so he could be more "commercial" like say Fabian).

If anyone was the "first" punk it was Link.

61. The funny thing is...
If I had made this list about three days ago I would have probably forgotten to add the Wipers to the list. I hadn't heard their music in years, and as far as I knew, it was all long out of print. Wednesday night I happenned to find a "box set" of the Wipers first 3 albums for about $20. Didn't have to think about that one twice

After hearing all that music again, I realized just how influential they were on other Northwest bands that came after them. Nirvana in particular. If I remember correctly Kurt used to talk about the Wipers all the time. And Art Alexakis from Everclear looks like he could be Greg Sage's little brother.

If they had put out these records in the early 90's instead of the early 80's, they would have been huge.

25. The Offspring
I like almost everything they've ever recorded and own all their albums, but Americana is probably my favorite. (BTW, if you aren't a fan of "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" or "Why Don't You Get a Job?" from that album, dig deeper; those are probably my two least favorite songs on there...)

Though FWIW, I haven't dug too deeply into punk so there's probably a lot of good stuff I don't know. I know a lot of major punk fans may not even consider the Offspring to be a true punk band; but I just wanted to mention them as they're one of my favorite groups of any genre.

49. It depends on what you what it means to "sell out"
I look at a couple of their recent singles more as novelty recordings than real punk but, to me, if it's good stuff I'll like it. Then again, as I mentioned earlier, I'm not a true "punk" anyway, just happen to like a handful of punk bands. But FWIW, other than those couple songs I mentioned earlier and the psychedelic "Pay the Man", the rest of Americana is pretty much the same punk sound they've been doing all along. I know that to some punk fans who are true purists they sold out the moment they got heavily played by radio and signed by Sony-owned Columbia, so I suppose it's all in one's definition of "selling out". :-)

40. No love for the Fall?
The Clash sucked after Mick left (okay, I know, they only released one more LP, but it was horrible).
The Pistols only made one proper album.
Somebody mentioned the Wipers, I'm a big fan of their first record (the one with "Return of the Rat" on it), but I don't much care for their later stuff.
The Damned couldn't cut it after Brian James left the band.
Darby Crash died before the Germs could parlay their one great album into true sustained greatness.
Wire, the Ramones, Alternative TV all sucked in the '80s.

Only the Fall made great punk records in the '70s, some of the best albums of the '80s, and were still at the top of their game in the '90s and 2000s. This may be because MES doesn't mind firing musicians once they start to sound tired. Whatever the reason, there is one band and one band alone from the late-'70s punk subculture which is still making relevant music today, and has been making relevant music all along.
