Comedy films that have no laughs whatsoever.
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 05:18 PM by terrya
So, I'm watching "The Sweetest Thing" on the Comedy Channel right now. This was right after watching "Vegas Vacation" on HBO. Neither of these films displayed even a moment, a millisecond of humor. I've been involved in car accidents that were funnier than these "comedies"

On the other hand, I can a watch a classic comedy like "Some Like It Hot", a movie made almost FIFTY years ago and laugh and laugh. It's a genuinely hilarious movie.

My question: does Hollywood make comedies you can actually laugh while watching anymore?

1. Give me a year or two to think. I just KNOW there's a modern yet funny
flick out there, somewhere...

Right, I thought about it for 5 years and just time travelled back. Nope. No funny movies that are modern.

7. Oh yeah
Great movie. Also try Bringing up Baby. Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. Hysterical! And the Marx Brothers are always good for a guffaw. My favorite W. C. Fields is It's a Gift.

"Carl LaFong. Capital-L, small-a, capital-F, small-o, small-n, small-g. Lafong. Carl LaFong!"

3. For a painfully bad comedy, try ISHTAR (1987) some time.
I don't normally walk out on a film, but ISHTAR was so-o-o-o horrendous, I ended up leaving the theater after about half an hour. Thankfully, I paid only $2.00 to see that stinkbomb at a second-run house. (Remember those?)

That's what I get for ignoring the film critics! :hurts:

18. "Ishtar" was unbelievably bad. I kept waiting ...
to "get" the joke, but there was no joke. It was just an interminable exploration into the depths of boredom. It could well be one of the worst movies ever made.

4. For some good modern comedy, try a Christopher Guest film.

8. Thank you for redeeming my faith in today's comedies.
Of course I forgot Christopher Guest's brilliantly funny films. And the best part is that they're all successful at the box office...relatively speaking.

13. Eye of the beholder
I really enjoyed Guffman, but was bored stiff by the other two.

5. Don't know if it was Hollywood
But Dogma was funny as all hell. I laughed myself silly in parts of that one. Imagine George Carlin as a Cardinal. "Jesus didn't come to Earth to give us the willies."

10. that was a hilarious flick.
Morriset as God... Hayak as muse gone stripper... okay the "shit monster" was more gross than funny - but overall it was great.

6. It all depends on taste
I think The Big Lebowski is one of the funniest movies (and quotable) ever, but others may not.

9. Actually, "Saved" was pretty funny. I laughed at a few points in
the movie. It's a spoof on the religious fundies - Okay, I'm laughing thinking about it!

11. "Saved" was better than it had to be, I thought
I was pleasantly surprised. I rented it, half-thinking it would be a total bomb, but there wasn't much else I wanted to rent. Surprisingly funny and good. And the ending was way more touching than I imagined it would be.

Didn't you just ROOT for the Jewish rebel girl? I LOVED HER!

The whole "Christian Jewels" rock band! The Christian "interventions."

God. Seriously. Too funny. Jesus' head falling on Amber's car in the end, when she flipped out.

15. Saved started out all right.
In the end it reminded me a lot of a John Hughes rat-pack era movie.

23. "Get Shorty"
It's hysterical without even really trying to be funny. And it's a chock full o'quotes to share with friends.
