Any words you think should be BANNED from the english language?
Words like fag, queer, nigger, cunt, whore, etc.

I myself feel that every person has the right to say ANY word they want. Of course they must also except the retaliation for their usage of the word, right?

So, what're your opinions?

I consider the term offensive
"what-not" offends me every time I hear it. That and when white folk say "dope" meaning "cool".

But as for offensive words that should be banned? None.

29. I never heard that till I came here...
or at least I never noticed it. I thought people weren't finishing their sentences. LOL Then my daughter said it one night, I asked her about it and near as I can tell it means "my mistake".

"Bitch". I know of many people who use it that wouldn't dream of using a racial or ethnic slur. I find that word very offensive.

You didn't answer the question. ;-) There are LOTS of words I don't like in the language also.

11. My friends and I use that all the time
Edited on Sat Sep-20-03 01:42 AM by armatt
The word "bitch" is a positive with my friends. If I call one of my friends a bitch, it automatically means "good job standing up for yourself and being a strong woman." I always say thank you after being called a bitch. I guess you need to know your audience before saying it.

ETA: I don't think any words should be banned. I remember reading once that all languages are perfect. We need all the words we have even if they are not polite and invent new words as the need arises. Unused words and meanings are naturally replaced or forgotten by society. Think of it like tribes in Africa who have no word for "snow," but in Alaska there are many. (It's probably too late at night to sound like such a nerd. :))

6. Silly Idea
Words can't be "banned" from a language. They can fall into disuse, but they don't disappear because they're "not nice."

I would like to see people who use "hopefully" as anything other than an adverb beaten, though.

I'm sure ASScroft has a lot of words he'd like to ban, and fine people for using. Remember Demolition Man?

14. Correct
On the other hand I have nothing against hopefully as a sentential modifier: it's clear what it means and is in common usage. Hopefully, you'll understand this.

9. The word "yogurt"
And any other words with the letters Y and G so close together, such as saggy, but not gyro, which uses a soft, rather than the hard, G (or an "h" sound, depending on your preference).

12. "blahblahblah". It's not really a word, but people often use it as one:
"So I'm, like, blahblahblah where's my sushi, and she's, like, the chef just died, and blahblahblah..."

13. Oh I do not care about the word. It is who speaks them that needs work.
My parents always said if you can not think of a word to use in the place of a swear word you are not in full use of your brain.Believe me no one swore in my family. 'Dubber' was the 'swear' word of the day and even then my mother would say. Well get a hold of your self as it is not any different to think the words than saying them.It all lowers your self.I never heard the women swear and it is a act I find hard to aim for.

19. SAince I'm a mommy, I have come up with lots of substitute epithets.
My co-workers find this very amusing. They can recall the one time I screamed the F-word, though: the time I opened a box of old books and got stung by a scorpion.

One nice thing about refraining form rough language: when you do happen to employ it, people know you are dead serious!

As for banning: nope. It would stifle a lot of great literature.

24. "Closure"
As a psychological concept, the term has no meaning for humans. Studies have shown that no particular event really helps people get over a mental scar, although events seen as "closure" may ease emotional pain for a while. The term is a product of a society that wants neat, tidy endings to everything in their lives, as if they've lost the ability to tell the difference between reality and television shows. It's a piece of psychobabble bullshit and I wish it would go away.

25. If you ban words that hurt or offend,
ultimately you give them more attention and more power than they deserve, and you don't stop their use. Usage then goes underground.

NSMA has a point. Better to envision and strive for obsolence of words we use to verbally assault one another.

Edited on Sat Sep-20-03 02:26 PM by sugarcookie
that pushes my button is "chill". Don't know why but saying "cool off" sounds 1000% better than telling someone to "chill".

edit: I don't think we should ban it, I just dont like it when it used in a way that sounds condescending.
