3. Phil Collins is god.
I don't care what anyone says.

I LOVE Phil Collins. (with or without Genesis)

5. I felt the same way up to and including (but not after) "Seconds Out."
I saw him with Genesis on the Seconds Out tour (actually the "Wind & Wuthering" tour) in San Francisco.

When Steve Hackett left, the reason to listen left with him.

8. Sorry, I started with Phil before Genesis.
I got "No Jacket Required" for xmas when I was eight, and was hooked.

Everything up to the collaboration with N Sync was great. Past that, I felt dirty buying his CDs.

As far as Genesis goes, I like "We Can't Dance" and "Invisible Touch", but I'm not a fan of much else.

11. You're not alone...
...although I must admit I haven't been able to listen to the stuff he's been writing for Disney and other music of his in that time frame.

His bitter songs about his bitter divorce helped get me through mine, and I was a Genesis fan before that. He's a marvelous musician.

16. Which songs were about his divorce?
I have all his albums, and haven't picked that up in any of them...

18. Here's the stuff...
..."Face Value" came during the rocky period in his marriage, "Hello, I Must Be Going" was the product of the time of the divorce being finalized. Even "No Jacket Required" has a tune or two where he's still working this out.

Relevant Tunes are mostly on "Hello...": "I Don't Care Anymore", "Do You Know, Do You Care?", "I Cannot Believe It's True", "It Don't Matter To Me", even "Why Can't We Wait Till Morning" (one of the saddest, most poignant songs he ever wrote.)

Screaming out a few of these a dozen times or so was very cathartic, lemme tell ya'.

20. I always thought "Through these Walls"
was one of the most poignant break-up songs ever. Its a great description of where your average guy can turn into a stalker...

24. Tooooooo Spoooooooky!
More creepy than poignant. Kind of in the mold of "Turn It On Again":

Through These Walls:
I like pretending
Wanting to touch them, wanting to see
It's only normal
Creeping behind you, now don't shout, 'cos it's alright
They keep the windows locked and the door shut tight

Turn It On Again:
You're just another face that I know from the TV show
I have known you for so very long I feel you like a friend
Can't you do anything for me, can I touch you for a while
Can I meet you another day and we can fly away

Both very spooky guys in these lyrics

29. "In The Air Tonight" was the one
...probably his biggest solo hit, written about his divorce and released while the wounds were still fresh for both.

6. Phil fscked up Genesis
Every true Genesis fan knows that you cannot replace Peter Gabriel. Yeah, sure, Genesis got a few top 40 hits with Phil, and made piles of dough, but the BEST songs were always Rutherford/Banks creations, with that bald, nasally dude singing over them.

Take Phil Collins. Take him far, far away.

10. Well, technically Gabriel quit, he wasn't replaced
They auditioned for a new singer and Phil was better than all of them. He's really not a bad singer, and he only started sucking in the late 80's. Which now that I think about it, was a long time ago. :)

27. It's an odd thing...
...one of the guys in Genesis, I don't recall which, put it very well. The newer Genesis fans, the ones who came along at or after "And Then There Were Three", can go backwards and appreciate the older Genesis music, while the older fans can't seem to let go and appreciate the newer Genesis. I'm in the Former category. :)

But to reiterate...when Phil started writing for Disney, he lost me. <razz>

12. awesome until late 70s
Phil Collins was an excellent drummer for early Genesis, and did vocal harmonies behind Gabriel in those days. In the mid-late 70s, he was a member of an interesting jazz-fusion band called Brand X, and also played on a lot of early Brian Eno albums along with Percy Jones (amazing bass player from Brand X).

When he went solo, I could hardly believe what I was hearing. Talk about a sell-out. Whew -- I cringe when I walk through the supermarket nowadays and hear those smarmy love songs. Ouch.... truly painful.

I looked up SMARMY in the dictionary:

Main Entry: smarmy
Pronunciation: 'smär-mE
Function: adjective
Etymology: smarm to gush, slobber
1 : revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating, or false earnestness <a tone of smarmy self-satisfaction -- New Yorker>
2 : of low sleazy taste or quality <smarmy eroticism>
3 : of poor taste, lacking artistic integrity <smarmy Phil Collins music>

I always get a kick out of threads where people discuss what is always, always subjective: taste in music, art, movies, and get all worked up about it. ;)

So long as we can all keep our heads, agree to disagree, and have fun with it, it's all good.

And while we're at it...yeah...if you don't like Phil Collins, go fuck yourself! (JUST Kidding...just go listen to what makes you happy.)

30. Reminds me of the old Hank Williams Jr. promo line...
"If you don't like Hank Williams, you can kiss my ass"

Worked for Williams. Probably WOULD NOT work for Collins.

31. I've always liked Mr. Collins...
and I'm only 23 (definitely not his target audience). He's sold millions of albums, so he must be doing something right. I pretty much only like commercial "sell-out" music. There's a reason why "underground" music stays "underground" (because it sucks  .)
