Modern instrumental music
Sitting here listening to Classical Gas by Mason Williams, I realized that there are far more pop instrumentals out there than you would think.

It's only a small group I can think of offhand, but here's a few.

Classical Gas
Brian's Song
The Gold Bug (Alan Parsons)
Dueling Banjos (aka song from Deliverance)
Music Box Dancer
Love is Blue

Add some more!

I think it was partially these and listening to "elevator music" before it was considered "elevator music" that actually got me interested in classical music in general.

So, add some of your own selections.

1. I could add about a million more...
Like, every last electronica song ever written. And every one of them is more recent than every song named above. OK, so they're not exactly "classical," but hey, you can't have everything :)

2. Just a few
Telstar.
Tubular Bells.
Popcorn (you may not know the name but I would bet you know the song)
Alan Parsons had one on every album but few got much airplay. The opening theme to I Robot got some play, myself I prefer the Fall of the House of Usher, particularly the 3rd movement with its lovely mandolin part.
Chariots of Fire theme.
Bladerunner opening and love theme.
The Good the Bad and the Ugly theme.

Actually, I am a major fan of modern instrumental works so it is hard for me to distinguish between what was popular and the stuff I know.

9. I prefer the original version
By Focus.

Besides it's more fun saying Hocus Pocus by Focus. :-)
