What's the single worst performance you've ever seen in a movie?
I would say Jake Lloyd in THE PHANTOM MENACE. I really dig that movie (flame on!), but every time Anakin says "Are you an angel?" or "Yippee!" I just want to hurl. But he's just a kid, so I'll cut him some slack.

Another choice is Sofia Coppola in GODFATHER PART III. Just horrible. But she isn't a professional actress, so I'll cut her some slack.

So my final choice is Martin Sheen in SPAWN. Through that whole shitpile of a movie he had this look on his face like "What the fuck am I doing in this thing? I really need to fire my agent." I read someplace that he made that movie for his grandkid who was a Spawn fan, but that's no excuse for that kind of slumming...

84. Heh...reminds me of the episode of "The Critic"
Where Jay Sherman is looking for a good movie to watch, and he sees a marquee announcing "The Merchant of Venice". Overjoyed, he goes inside. After he does, the paper covering part of the marquee blows away, revealing the words, "starring Keanu Reeves". Cut to Jay inside the movie theater, and Keanu on the screen in renaissance-type clothing, saying (in "Valley Dude" voice): "Hath not a dude eyes? If you prick us, do we not get bummed?"

66. Agree! And why does the actress have to be Italian?
After all, isn't Diane Keaton the "mom" in the film?
Surely some wonderful, TALENTED, dark-haired actresses would have begged to play the part.

To figure out who was available, we'd have to consider the time frame. Wonder where Selma Hayak was... or even Winona Ryder. I can't recall right now the years covering the filming.

But ANYONE could act out of a paper bag and do it better. Come on!

123. I disagree... Sofia was the right choice
Who better to play the boss's daughter than the boss's daughter?

The whole point of her character is to BE unappealing and clueless and inappropriate and not terribly attractive -- because Andy Garcia's character has to bite the bullet and seduce her DESPITE all her flaws. We see that Garcia can bed Bridget Fonda without breaking a sweat, so we know he pursues Sofia for leverage with her father. Then despite his intentions, he ends up falling for her.

Sofia knew how to play the role of someone who's had everything handed to them their entire life... they could have cast the Bush twins, too.

If Wynona HAD gotten the role, then of COURSE Andy Garcia would pursue her... who wouldn't? It would undermine the whole point of the character.

I think it's easy to piss on Sofia and blame the whole failure of the movie on her. But really, Francis lost his touch years ago, Pacino phoned it in, and cramming all the characters from the first two into the movie, and a convoluted plot were much bigger problems. Maybe Robert Evans could have saved it...

128. I don't disagree with the failings of the film that you cite.
My problem is that Sophia Coppola cannot act. And I say it as someone who has directed and acted - she absolutely sucked the life out of each scene she was in! I think Winona Rider would have been only marginally better. IMO, her talent evaporated as she reached adulthood. It would have been a great part for a talented unknown actor.

43. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Yeah, I still remember Costner's infamous turn in that aaawwwful Robin Hood movie back from the early 90s. I never thought he was a bad actor otherwise, in fact while I was hardly a fan of Waterworld I didn't take it as the insult to civilized tastes that many critics seemed to portray it as. But in RHPOT the guy couldn't decide what kind of accent he was supposed to be affecting (it changed midway through the damn film!), and he wasn't exactly the most agile type with a sword and a fair maiden by his side (Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio, IIRC, as Maid Marian)-- you really got the distinct sense that this character was a 1990s sensitive American guy plopped down in the Middle Ages w/o a clue about what he was doing there. Many critics joked that Mel Brooks' ensuing satire (Robin Hood: Men in Tights) was best not made since the original was a satire of itself.

Maybe it was the Morricone theme music. Costner had one great line. After the fight on the parapets when Frank Nitty fell to his death through the roof of a ragtop, someone in the courthouse asked him where Nitty was. Costner/Elliot Ness responded: "He's in the car".

I thought Costner was pretty good in "Bull Durham". I fell asleep during "Wolves".

61. Costner was best when they parodied him playing Jack Garrison on Seinfeld
They did a parody of the "JFK" movie. Seinfeld reproduced the courtroom scene with Garrison discounting the single bullet theory by using a pointer. In this case, the projectile was a hock that Kramer let loose and allegedly hit someone.

Does that make sense?

I think Costner has a high ego/talent ratio. He's just soooo cute.

41. Good God, you're hopeless...
That scene you mention from Part II is one of my favorite scenes ever. It's mainly because of Pacino's brilliant (largely silent) performance, but the whole thing still gives me chills.

I agree that Diane Keaton is better in lighter movies, but that's precisely why she was PERFECT as Kay.

Pacino was brilliant there. I think Keaton just couldn't keep up with ALL the great actors in those films.

I was forced to see the movie, and I was just so impressed with her acting choices and the way she played the role that for once I said "OH, I guess she IS talented." The Oscar nom was totally deserved.

Worst movie ever. Whoever played the leading lady was terrible. Think of all the good that $$$ could of accomplished instead of being wasted on this tripe - I can't help but watch it when it comes on - like a car wreck or something.

Also, "Twister", Bill Pulman (entire cast actually) was terrible. We still try and watch the part where they are at the Aunts house and they are all talking about past tornadoes and F1's and F2's and Bill's wife says "Now, I'm lost - has anyone seen an F5?" and the forks hit the table, and the heads drop - cheesy, very cheesy.

I hate to say that because there's not a bigger fan in the world of Jon, Richie, and the boys than me.

When Bon Jovi acts, he does his lines and everything very well. Unfortunatly, he looks like Jon Bon Jovi pretending to be something other than one of the greatest rock legends of all time. It'd be like Steven Tyler pretending to be a WWII sailor when all your eyes can see is "Living in an Elevator". It's just not believable in my opinion. But I could be wrong...and hope it's only me...

She made no attempt at an Irish accent. Otherwise, her performance was totally clueless. She was obviously hired for "box office" appeal. Are there no Irish actresses?

Otherwise, the film was pretty fine, with Liam Neeson as the star & some fine supporting actors. (Aidan Quinn sounded more Irish-American than Irish, though.)

148. I loved that film. I was captivated.
I had never read Irish history so it was all new to me. My first glimpse of Neeson was positive. I don't even remember the Julia Roberts part.

149. Brad Pitt, in "Interview with the Vampire"
Quite a feat, considering that film also had Tom Fucking Cruise in it. Still, Pitt's performance was so odious, so reprehensibly bad, I cannot conceive of any worse acting on the big screen.
