Atlantis discovered! This time it's under the sea off Cyprus
The Times
From Michael Theodoulou in Limassol and Stefanie Marsh

IN THE child’s imagination or in the whimsical plots of the cult 1970s television series, Atlantis exists, variously, on the tip of a Bolivian volcano, beneath the sands of the Arabian desert or in the Fourth Dimension somewhere off the coast of Bermuda.

Now the Utopian civilisation described in 400BC by Plato and supposedly submerged in a deluge 11,600 years ago, has been “definitively located”, for the 47th time in recent years.

Robert Sarmast, an American researcher, is “absolutely convinced” that he has discovered the lost city after finding what he claims is evidence of man-made structures submerged in the sea between Cyprus and Syria.

Mr Sarmast, who has nurtured an obsession with Atlantis since he was a young boy, said that the dimensions and configuration of straight walls and a canal on a hillside above a rectangular plain on the sea-bed “perfectly” matched Plato’s description of the fabled city consigned to the deep by earthquakes and flooding. “We have proven this is a match that cannot be coincidental,” he said.

1. The outer wall, canal and river path look more like
the result of a landslide. The canal and river path are the slab separation points and the outerwall is where the landslide came to rest.

3. 'Perfectly matched'?
Even the size?

I doubt that.

14. The Size and Location are Controversial
Plato, referring to the writings of Solon, is traditionally believed to have located Atlantis out in the Atlantic, "beyond the Pillars of Hercules." However, it's also claimed that the name of the ocean Plato used referred to the entire ocean surrounding Africa, which would include the Mediterranean.

Plato also said that Atlantis was larger than Libya and Asia Minor (Turkey). It's kind of an odd comparison. But "larger than" may originally have read "between", which apparently has a very similar spelling in Greek. Either Plato was confused or the text has been corrupted.

The location Sarmast located is a sunken city in the Eastern Mediterranean (between Libya and Turkey) which used to be home to an advanced civilization (advanced for the time) and which sunk after a catastrophic volcanic eruption. Setting aside the location and size, this is how Plato described Atlantis.

It's an interesting interpretation, all the more believable because an actual candidate for Atlantis can be found in the Mediterranean whereas there's no trace of a large sunken continent in the Atlantic.

7. What is it that they'll do with it?

I admit, I am excited by the prospect but then what? Do we start sifting water out with buckets?

6. What I heard about Atlantis
Some billionaire bought it, had it dismantled and moved to Arizona, where it's a famous tourist attraction now.

That's a true story, because I saw it on the Internet.

9. Oh yeah... They did find it....

They moved it to The Bahamas... But it was a little run down so they "fixed" it up and now it costs $1000 a night to hang out there...

13. From Plato's Timaeos
I was wondering why he had a section in it about where to get "the youngest hookers for the best prices".

Now if I can get that past peer review in the Journal of Classical Languages and Linguistics, I'll be a happy man.

hookers there? Dang. Silly honeymoon. j/k I did get an offer to purchase marijuana within 5 minutes of exiting the plane. No hookers though.

To stay OT has anyone asked Patrick Duffy what he thinks about all this? (wow really dating myself)

8. Yes, yes.
And massive, burning balls of hydrogen millions of light years away can predict your future simply from the shapes they seem to have to an over-active imagination when seen from the point of view of Earth.

Oh, and an omniscient, omnipotent being created that same Earth in seven days. Six, actually. He took the seventh off.

Oh, and the government has a secret treaty with little gray men who can travel much faster than light and for some reason want to experiment on this one, insignificant race (never mind that if we grant the existence of these little gray men, it follows that there must be plenty of other races for them to anally probe).

And plenty of people believe one, two or all of the above statements. Given that, why not Atlantis? Just another ridiculous thing we can buy into to make sense of things we don't understand -- or, once we've actually made sense of them, somethin we continue to believe because to do otherwise would just be wrong.
