"Avatars" in Common......Anyone notice who has picked your own Avatar?
What's kind of fun about "new DU" is noticing who picks what Avatars, to me. Since many of us couldn't figure out how to do our own gif's or figure out how to host something we liked, some of us were always "naked" posters with no cute graphics or profound signature lines. NOW we have AVATARS, and many of us have figured out with much help how to include a sig. line so we are now "clothed."

However, what's interesting is the "Avatars in Common." I'm finding many DU'ers whose posts I always make a point to read (even if I don't reply on a thread) have now picked MY Avatar! Or, maybe I picked THEIRS. Whatever......it seems DU'ers that I feel I have something in common with also are sharing my Avatar!

Anyone else in the part of our "formerly naked, computer challenged group" here on DU, notice "Avatars in Common?"

2. Have seen a few of the same one I use
How many DUers are using the SWA Service Medal? I've seen several Vietnam Service Medals as well. Personally, I'd like to see some more medals. Let the lurking freepers know a lot of us are former or active duty military.

When I tell someone I'm ex-military, they are temporarily stunned by my hatered of all things republican. Makes me smile.

7. No prob
The medal/ribbon is what you wear on your chest. I received the Southwest Asia Service Medal which is what is in my avatar.

Others, like DemoTex (I think) are sporting the Vietnam Service Medal. Which is this one:

They just mean you served in that theater of operation during a specified period of time.

1. US Air Force markings of a White Star in a Blue Circle with a Red and White Bar on either side was called a 'Star and Bars'.

2. Confederate Battle Flag was called the "Stars and Bars".

35. The bars
The bars on the ribbons don't mean anything. Every ribbon has to be unique, that's all. Now, you'll sometimes find devices on ribbons like an oak leaf cluster or a "V" or something. You can look at the link Moongod provided to learn about that.

32. I think that this is an excellent idea
Unlike the Bush* currently occupying the White House, only someone who has served and experienced war first-hand, can understand what the young Americans he's currently deploying all over the world are facing. I heard that the founder of the ``human shield'' organization that was in Iraq at the start of the war is a former Marine who served in the ``first'' Gulf War. He said that he had seen enough killing.

If you hate all things republican, you might get a kick out of this flash animation. I just played it yesterday for a friend's dad who is a veteran of WWII!

I have changed my avatar to the 'War On Terrorism' ribbon. I am also qualified for the Southwest Asia (Persian Gulf) with 2 stars (multiple awards), but since I missed Gulf War I (I was on shore duty), I feel the War on Terror ribbon is more appropriate for me.

Others I like but didn't choose because I knew they'd be popular:

- Eleanor Roosevelt
- Dem donkeys
- State icons

I might choose the compass or one of the world maps when I feel like changing it. Interesting, I don't think I've seen an Amelia Erhardt one yet. I could use it.

For now, I like the wine glass. Salut!

Not suprising, AFAIK, there's only about 5 of us in Montana that post with any frequency. I thought maybe the Montana flag, but naw, it's so lame. There are 17 that follow this pattern exactly, and 10 more that are almost like this.

1) State seal
2) Navy Blue background

HOW LAME IS THAT!!!

Although, it does actually say MONTANA in big yellow letters...

Now, if Montana's didn't have the word MONTANA, could you find it in the crowd?

Odd I should return here and discover your post! I have noticed two others, Caution and The_Zoo, who I really don't know, who also chose Carter. For me, when I was first looking through them all, I just saw him and knew it was right. He symbolizes a much better time for this country for me. He was an honest and sincere man and my favorite president of my lifetime. I know that history will prove him to be rated higher among ex-presidents than he currently is. His recent award of the Nobel Peace Prize, long overdue, is the beginning of his vindication. He is continuing to work hard for this country and has the respect of the world, unlike the current occupant of the White House. I applaud your choice, Cheswick!:-)
