Report on the Jethro Tull concert

Wow wow wow wow!!!!

Now, I went as a supporter of hubby, who is mainly the Tull fan in the family. But I am gonna have to listen to more Tull myself now.

We were at the Maine center for the Arts, a cozy venue which seats 1620 souls. The band broke the concert down into two parts: Acoustic first, & "make your ears bleed" second.

The patter between songs was witty and entertaining, and Ian Anderson's antics were a lot of fun, though I hear he was really something to behold in concert 30 years ago. :) The humongous helium balloons with Anderson's pied piper silhouette plastered on their sides were a gas (pun intended), but they never reached us up in the balcony section.

They only played a few newer songs, and I rather liked their funky take on "We Three Kings". They played most, if not all, of the Aqualung album, and many other older tunes. The only one they didn't do that I'd hoped to hear was "The Whistler"

Sadly, there was no opportunity to get an autograph, which was a bummer on account of hubby had their second album (vinyl) cover with him. It's a woodcut pic and in pretty decent shape and would have looked great with a few names scrawled across it. Also, I did not run into Stephen King. I had kinda figured that was as good a place as any to bump into him, but no dice.

Tull is terrific in concert. I saw their last show at the Fillmore East before the Fikkmore closed. Price of a ticket $5.50 for tht e bsdt ticket.

almost EVERY concert has a meet-n-greet after the concert....

ususally sponsored by a radio station....figure out where it is and just hang out and try to blend in.

16. He did Budapest in 2002

...at the most recent concert where I live. That show was my fifth. I saw the tours for Bursting Out, Heavy Horses, A, and Stormwatch.

It doesn't surprise me Ian likes it. Budapest is one of my concert favorites, too.

9. Jethro Tull was the first concert I ever went to!

It was 1973 and the "Passion Play" tour...I was 15 and a senior in high school in Portland and I was blown away by their musicianship and theatricality (hope that's a word)... There was a screen showing a film of a ballerina and when she appeared to jump into the camera (or the audience presumably) the band just jumped out from the screen and started playing the entire "Passion Play" album! Then when they finished Ian sais "thank you! And now, for our next song..." and they did "Thick As a Brick!"...and then they did a bunch of songs from "Aqualung:, including "Cross-Eyed Mary", "Locomotive Breath", the title song, and wrapped it up with "Wind-Up" as the encore...It was an awesome show!

I saw them again a few years later in Mobile, Ala. when "Minstrel in the Gallery" came out...it seemed they weren't as popular down there, the arena was half full at best and definitely the audience lacked the enthusiasm the people in Portland had and I think it reflected in the performance, sad to say.

I like the early Tull the best, up to about Heavy Horses...and the album your husband had (Stand Up) is a particularly "stand up" album :) It's a little "heavier" than their other stuff but I like the way it sounds plus it has "Bouree" on it.

10. After 3 decades of listening,

I saw Tull live a couple of years ago. And wondered why I'd waited so long. Ian Anderson...the pied piper on the stage.

Besides some old favorites, he played a lot of instrumental stuff, a lot of different instruments, some I'd never heard of. Some world music. All the stuff I'd come to hear, and so much more.

I'd go again any time I got the chance.

13. I learned how to play flute in high school

so I could try the Jethro Tull riffs. I've seen them in concert four times I recall. The "A" tour (1979? 80?)was my first rock concert. I still have the shirt, in tatters and certainly too small to cover my spare tire.

I saw that Ian Anderson was doing a concert in Detroit but alas I find concerting to be way too expensive these days.

Front row right. Great show, but you can tell he'd aged quite a bit.

My first Tull concert was in 1979 in L.A. to promote their live "Bursting Out" album. There were 15,000 people in the arena. Ian Anderson was in peak form then, in his 30s and in great physical condition. He leapt around the stage like a gymnast. It was amazing.

It may have been the best band Ian had ever put together -

15. Yeah. Tull puts on one of the all time great shows. Ian Anderson is

a fantastic entertainer and musician.

Was the original guitar player, Martin Barre, playing with them?

22. Whenever anyone asks me what the best concert I've seen was -

I never hesitate to tell them, "Jethro Tull." I've seen a whole lot of concerts, but never one that blended theater, humor, and flat-out excellent musicianship like Tull did.
