DU Angst or PMS?
I saw some poor soul with 11 posts make a comment that other day and a wolf pack of DUers beat him/her down with one making disparaging comments about the number of posts this person had. It was disgraceful.

Today, I expressed an opinion and one of your lesser numbers, who has 1000+ but poor manners, made a snide remark about my number of posts.

There is a lot of rumors about DU and its Administrators and one thing that I've heard is about the ugly manners on DU. It is one thing that made me hesitate to do any posting.

I'm as sorry as the rest of you that the Bush Regime screwed us again and apparently stole another election. But I don't see that is any justification for bad manners, snotty comments, or fascist-like behaviors worthy of John Ashcroft.

1. I am sorry you have been treated poorly..
Welcome to DU.. I have re-posted your excellent post on recounts in a thread of my own in the Report Voting Problems thread.

If you are interested in Voting Integrity you may find a more conducive environment in that forum and in the Presidential Results Forum.

GD has always been a bit roughhouse and seems to be getting more so.

4. Don't worry---It's no worse here than anyplace else
I think no matter where you go in Real or Cyber life it takes time for people to get to know you. People on line do exercise a freedom to express their sceptism that would be considered poor form in "real life".

People here are just getting to know you. They are checking you out. You should be doing the same. There are many good folks here and there are the idiots. After a while you'll learn the difference.

(Now for my ironic disclaimer: I am actually not a newbie. My low post count is do to a screw up on my part when I tried to change my name. I have been a member since 2002 and have a post count of over 1000.)

5. I agree entirely with you

Too much suspicion going around lately....but of course we've had undue stress recently too.

I think post count is given too much credence here.

6. PMS? What is this PMS that you speak of. I have no idea of what you
mean. Do you mean PMS, as in what men tend to blame their troubles with women upon??? No, I won't slam on you for post count..that never matters to me. But I will question the intelligence of making a sexist remark in your subject line. That said, welcome to DU and I do look forward to getting to know you. :toast:

7. Well, with 55,000 people. you're going to run in to that,
unfortunately. Welcome to DU, and don't let them get to you. If nothing, else, just consider it practice for dealing with jerks elsewhere - at least here, even if you do run across them, you know that you can find backup.

8. Some people can be asses but...
There are a lot more decent people here than the other kind. I don't really look at post count, but it does happen. This has also been a time when a lot of people have come on here to disrupt, but to be honest...the disrupters don't really harm anything if you don't let them. Too many people take the bait and get pissed..then it becomes a flame war and a mess.
I don't know if it will make you feel any better, but I have been here for close to 2 years and I have 3,000+ posts and I still feel like I'm fairly new. And I still get crap for saying some things.

9. Given what this election was like it isn't surprising.
I'm not defending the idjits at all, but I also think it might be a good idea to remember that this election was brutal. A lot of ordinarily mellow people are wrapped pretty tight right now.

Something else to carry in your mind is the idea that political boards can be somewhat less than ideal for "tender" exchanges. There are several folks who see politics as a blood sport, and they cut no quarter for anyone--even folks they know and ordinarily get along with.

I think I'd been here at DU for all of about a week and I ran afoul of one of the "oldtimers" on the subject of Cuba. I'd come from a Salon's Tabletalk Whitehouse forum, and not much phased me--but had I not been baptized by fire there, I think I might have run screaming from DU at first.

I was "new meat" and that old timer was simply trying to get the feel of who I am. Is it possible that some of what you feel is people trying to sort you out?

Welcome to you, BTW!

Laura

10. I know what you mean. I was run out of here on a rail back when I first
joined on account of my party affiliation. But obviously I came back and found it worth my while to stick it out.

Still get called a troll and freeper now and then. By folks with fewer post counts, at that! *lol*

*hugs*

13. I think you are being a little critical of DU and its admins
I've been on the internet(s) a long time and belonged to many a board, and this is the best moderated board I've seen.

Things have been extremely difficult since the week of the election. It is entirely possible that the posters you saw being rude to another were themselves disruptors. We've had an epidemic of new posters pretending to be Democrats but whose sole purpose is to make us look bad.

Unfortunately, this has a ripple effect, making others paranoid and thus causing a continuation of bad behavior.

The best advice we can all give is to remind people to hit alert if you see a post that makes you suspicious. Please don't call the person out on the board or comment about their number of posts. It is counter-productive. Just hit alert and let the mods handle it.

If you see a poster being ganged up on, hit alert.

If somebody posts something rude, hit alert.

If you suspect a poster of being a disruptor, hit alert.

And don't respond! It just kicks the thread. Let it sink by ignoring it and hitting alert.

15. "Freepers" are like living down the hall from a couple of "old bags"
They talk about everyone on the floor because that is the only thing that they have in life but If you shut your door then they can't bother you. Put them on ignore and they will vanish.

If this becomes a flame bait thread then you click on the ignore thread feature and forget about it.

Its about the content of your messages not the quantity anyways.

Welcome to DU
