$17,4000,000??? Really?

"No. 6 (Yellow, White, Blue over Yellow on Gray)" by Mark Rothko, 1954, fetched 17.4 million dollars, a record for the artist, Sotheby's announced.(AFP/OFF)

I wouldn't want anyone to know I paid THAT much for something I could do either

The 1954 Rothko piece, which had been expected to bring in 9-12 million dollars, went to an anonymous bidder for 17.4 (sic) million.

1. I love Rothko. Would I pay that much $ for it? Only if I had plenty more $

7. Yes! That's what "cinched" my love for his paintings.
I've tried to describe the experience to people - that it really is a spiritual experience sitting in there surrounded by his large canvasses - but they just don't get it.

You have to see his work in person.

10. I've spent many an hour in there.
It's the most peaceful place I've ever been to.

6. BRILLIANT! Can I bid for it on e-bay?
or can I just give you my bank information so that you can take all the money you want because obviously I shouldn't be trusted with it.

11. Just because you don't appreciate Rothko doesn't negate his work.
Art is always subjective.

19. You are so right. I'm one of those to whom painting doesn't
reach me. But, music and literture do.

12. Thank you I was going for a more non-boxy feel
But of course I am terribly tormented as it is not perfect in my eye.

Five DOLLARS? Can I get Five DOLLARS for it?

14. Yes yes I would
As it was explained to me by an art student when I was in college

"But HE did it first!"

This in response to my dismay at "art" that looked like anyone could make.

18. Rothko always makes me think of ...
Kurt Vonnegut's 'Bluebeard,' I believe it was, where the narrator is a modern artist who did a big mural for a corporation using household paints that suddenly degraded and started flaking off a few years later. His career, if I remember the plot correctly, was ruined because the house paint was defective.
