Cancer Patient Catches ID Thief
(AP) A technician at a cancer center has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for stealing the identity of a gravely ill patient, who spent months trying to clear his name while the disease ravaged his body.

The technician, Richard W. Gibson, 42, is the first person in the nation sentenced under a new law designed to protect patients' privacy, federal prosecutors said.

He also will be required to pay at least $15,000 in restitution, including reimbursing patient Eric Drew for the time and money he spent trying to clear his name.

"This court considers your behavior in this case to be some of the most deplorable I've seen in 15 years on the bench," U.S. District Judge Ricardo Martinez told Gibson.

1. this is the same guy who allegedly stole my info from my hospital records
and sold it on to other cocksuckers who jacked my checking and saving accounts. And opened checking accounts in my name. The FBI could not find where he accessed my info or Eric Drew's info.

cocksucker. I was watching his smug ass on tv last night. He's only sorry Eric drew didn't die. It is alleged he sold mine on. really a total fucker. I hate him. I still get calls from collection agencies.

Roast in hell motherfucker:grr:. I did not die, neither did Eric Drew:grr: :nuke: :grr:

How in the world can he sleep at night knowing what he has done??? Jesus, I can't even find the words to describe how appalling this is! I agree that he should roast in hell and that he is a motherfucker! I am so sorry to hear this, darling!

There are no words in the English language harsh enough to describe my feelings about this!

22. No. Hospital security personnel were mortified that this had happened
as a result, several things in the way they handle patient info has totally changed (and ah helped!).

We had a meeting (Privacy officers from Harborview, SCCA and ME!) and hashed out some new security stuff (I used to investigate fraud).

Now the hospital staff has no access to patients' SSNs. The 'Stand Back' from check in line is further away from check in. Hospital acct #s, no longer written on the outside of the remit envelopes. stuff like that.

24. this isn't that uncommon
I read some literature aimed at criminals from our whackjob libertarian friends at loompanics and it has been suggested on occasion that medical records are a great place to steal identities. They often have your social security, and this is, as they deem it, "the keys to the kingdom."

They should not allow social security numbers to be used on medical records for this very reason. Some clerks even sell copies of patient's files for a small fee to identity thieves.

26. it may not be uncommon, but can you think of anything lower?
It's definitely up there with preying on the elderly - I just don't understand how people can be so heartless! I agree that eliminating social security numbers would help.

However, can I tell you that there is a website used to locate people that easily provides ss #s by clicking on a box - yes, my law firm had to sign release forms and everything, but all it would take is one rouge employee and he or she would have a gold mine on their hands! Our particular firm limits access to the site to one person (me), but I doubt all law firms are so diligent!

9. Thanks Kleeb
this guy picked two people (at least) he thought were going to die. When my records got shot to SCCA, it was because they thought my cancer had come back. If it had, it's about 100% fatal in recurrance.

Somebody used my SSN DOB and name to try to open a Sprint acct the same day. I destroy all my info-this was narrowed to be the only place it could have come from.

Luckily, it was scar tissue :whew!:

I am glad you recovered from cancer though. Sick bastard he is. You know whats funny though I oppose lowering penalties for drug use and I oppose the death penalty always but I believe violent offenders seldom should be let out and that crooks like this fuck should be sent to regular jail. I hope this fuck gets his ass kicked.

I didn't expect you to change the wording, but that's cool that you did! :-)

Don't worry about an apology. You were justifiably angry and had to vent. I know the feeling well, can't blame you for being so vocal, and ID thieves get on my nerves royally as well. (I recently had to open up a new checking account, and I discovered Friday that I lost my insurance card...)

I hope that you can get your ID theft situation under control asap. It can be a nightmare...

25. Well I need not to give the perception I am attacking someone
because I am angry with someone else. It was thoughtless of me. thanks for your kindness.

The thing is under control. Someone in Vancouver WA is under sentence for using a check with my name on it down there. 20 months probabtion. There is federal activity on some other fronts. And I called the voice mail on my checks over and over and over again-to threaten them, call them horrible names, and fill up the voice mail so they could not get to important messages and to fuck them up. It was totally satisfying. ("You have *185* new messages..."):D

he was so not remorseful, smiling and shit. It's a good thing I didn't know about his court appearance. I'd be doing time for contempt. And assault, w/ intent to kill. Or just murder.

They ran his ass straight to the hoosegow too. No stops at home. The judge was pissed at this colostomy bag filler...

34. I remember seeing Eric Drew on TV when he first found out about it
He was crying. I thing it was about a year ago. I thought "That poor poor bastard. That so totally sucks." It made me cry. Cancer is bad enough. He was ill as fuck, and a truly giving person. Much more ill than I, much more giving than I. They had no idea who was doing it, and the Seattle Police were as useful as tits on a boar. No time, they said. He got the attention of a TV station and they found Mr Asshole on film at Lowe's buying shit.

They went around to crap gift stores in the hospital district, and The privacy officers started getting sick when shop keepers remembered a guy in scrubs making purchases.

If Eric Drew hadn't worked his really ill ass off, I would not have had a clue about my ID theft. And I had the energy to rip the Seattle PD a huge new one. :) Been wanting to do that since WTO.

40. Years ago when my e-husband was going through cancer treatments
Someone stole some sterling silver jewelry that was left in his room while he was going through a treatment. Then afterwards he was so sick and tired he didn't notice right away things were taken. My X thought maybe it was the guy in the bed next to him that week but he was never sure.

All I know is if I ever see anyone wearing a paticular piece of sterling silver jewelry, I will rip it off their body right then and there. The ex was a talented silversmith and I'll recognize his work anywhere not to mention his distinctive hallmark on the back of everyone of his pieces.
Low life-fuck! Who ever it is

How selfish of a low-life scum can a person be to steal personal things and ID's from others that are so sick they're unable to defend themselves very well, if at all.

I am sorry stuff got taken. there are too many pieces of shit that are more than willing to steal. It's quite common in hospitals, nursing homes, whereever you might find vulnerable people.
